You bet! I was pretty spooked at the beach for a few years afterwards. Had nightmares in which my bed was floating in hte middle of the ocean, and that big head would rise up just by my side.
The current generation of kids are not as spooked when they see it, and they don't get it at all when Quint crushes the beer can single handed :cantbeli:

Good choices. Now, my personal favorite is The Thing.
Used to scare me to hell as a kid, but now it's just cool to watch and brings back memories.
Another one that's good (and a classic), is the Exorcist.

The orginal Excorsist and the revamped version they came out with a couple years back but the sequels could go to hell... Literally ;)
I know some people will laugh at this, but The Ring scared me pretty badly, and so did The Blair Witch Project. I rented Ringu, the Japanese version of The Ring, and that was pretty freaky too. The Chucky movies scared me badly as a kid.

Horror movies quit scaring me years ago for some reason... :|
I remember watching the Friday the 13th & Halloween series marathons back in the day, I guess those were the scariest.
I'm a big From Hell fan and Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cool because of Jessica Biel, ;)

My favorite would have to be the very first "Friday the 13th". That damn music is what got me. Also the Freddy movies got me for a while. But the scariest damn movie I have ever seen would have to be GIGLI. :D :D :D

Horrors are ussualy to stupid to be scary:
Funiest, completly not scary:
Old: Dawn of the Dead
Film about that guy with chainsaw arm
Most Sensational, excelent but also not scary:
Van Helsing
One with shwarzy fighting evil in churches
Aliens==part 2
Predator
The Thing (great music and atmosphere, esspecialy at first time)
28 days later
Teriminator1,2,3(3 is quite good esspecialy end, I can't wait for fully skynet part)
Most Teribble Horrors, this movies give me worst thoughts about direction our civilisation and esspecialy cinematography is going to:
Almost every new s-f movie(matrix, AI, solaris, minozryty report, pussylibrium, etc etc etc ), those movies are so teribble that I almost get heart attack while watching them...
Things that scareed me, not being a horror:
Threads, its best apocalitic movie out there
many more...
Most Stupid(Idiocy woul be better word) or boring:
Whole rest... including:
the hole
wrong turn
alien, alien3 , alien4
........
I tell you guys: if someone burns to dust he can't walk anymore :)

John Carpenter's The Thing rocked.....
But The Ring was nutty.......that water-logged little fresk girl coming out of the TV was spooky.....
I heard the Japanese Writer/Director of the original Ring is now working on something called Dark Water...sounds like it's got potential :D

The Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, funny the first kill, where he trips on the board and gets whacked by the hammer. Crap the remake. I also like dawn of the dead, mad when they start to eat the bikers guts and he's screaming.
Im a big John Carpenter fan. "The Thing" is THE horror movie, it really gave me shivers when I first saw it as a kid. "The Prince of Darkness" is first class too, and let's not forget "The Fog". My favorite Carpenter flick, however, is his 70's scifi parody "Dark Star".
Haven't watched much horror apart from Carpenter. David Cronenberg's "The Dead Zone" was cool, largely thanks to Chris Walken. Then, maybe "The Omen" and the sequels, although it could've been better. I saw the orginal "The Ring" in japanese and it was quite intense.
Oh, and the price for the worst, campest horror movie of all times goes to: "The Island of Doctor Moreau". I still cannot understand why Brando took a role in that flop.
I heard the Japanese Writer/Director of the original Ring is now working on something called Dark Water...sounds like it's got potential :D
woot I can't wait to see it :D I wonder what it's about.
@Herrmannek:  You're so right...Wrong Turn was one of the most terrible movies I've ever seen. I have no idea why anyone would ever waste their time making it.

The Exorcist scared me to death. When I was really young, I saw Jaws when I was visiting my aunt and uncle on Fire Island (circa 1977) -- I didn't go near the beach for about 5 years after that one.
I liked the 1982 version of 'The Thing'. woot
The older John Carpernter stuff is great, naturally I'll go for "Halloween".

John Carpenter has made some great films. I loved “Prince of Darkness” and his remake of “The Thing” I met him in Atlanta years back after he and his buddies stole my great freak show watching seats at Dragon Con. We talked at great length and laughed that nobody else recognized him.
Some of my favorite horror/suspense has been the film versions of Thomas Harris’s books especially the original version of “Red Dragon” called “Manhunter” from 1986. “Silence of the Lambs” was pretty fun too.
People make much better monsters.

I made the mistake of watching Scary Movie 3 - to me, the funniest part was that I paid to see it. I want those 2 hours back.
I dunno - so many fun horror movies out there. I like 'em all for different reasons (camp value, cool monsters etc.). My all time favorite has to be - the Thing (1982)

Other ones that come to mind, Exorcist, The Reanimator & From Beyond (probably more bizarre than scary), Alien, Return of the Living Dead (funny and gruesome), the Evil Dead movies, Hellraiser (only the first one), Pumpkin Head, Event Horizon. . .

Not necassarily my favorite horror movie. But that scene in Salems Lot when the kids in the hospital, and his brother starts scraping at the window, still gives me the creeps big time.
