I just purchased a "new" Mosin Nagant. My question is. What is it necessary to take the cosmoline of and if so what is the best course of action to do so?

its Russian! hell before the cosmoline it was probably buried for years in Siberia, like diesel will damage anything p-)

I kid I kid!

I just remember hearing stories of soldiers dipping complete AK's in tubs of diesel hence the joke, thought it shouldn't hurt doing the bolt at least

Gasoline and the big paper towels they have in car shops. You can also liquify it by heating it with an electric heat gun

I used windex, but be prepared to then clean and dry it very well so as not to effect the metal.

Metal just clean by very hot water

Wood - wrap into rags and let it on the sun in the car, replace rags as needed
this is long but not invasive method

quicker method is to use easy oven cleaner or such stuff, but the wood might be affected

excellent source of info:

just use hot water, also for the wood, just be sure that you dry it properly after, solvents are likely do dissolve the finnish as wel. make sure you get all the cosmoline out of it, mosins are likely to become very hot after a few rounds and the cosmoline starts to dripp, you can get some nasty wounds that way
enjoy your rifle, it is as light as a feather but kicks like a donkey

I had an old Enfield with the same issue. I removed all the wood, covered the wood with paper towels and stuck it in the oven at low temps for 5-10 minutes. I wiped it down and repeated the process a few times. That seemed to work for me.

Remove the action from the stock

get some simple Green and a garbage pail fill with hot water/degreaser soaking it and scrubbing it thoroughly with non abasive (Plastic Bristle)brushes. Run patches through the bore & chamber.

When done, rinse completely, dry thoroughly, and Oil all Metal surfaces.

For the wood

A Hair Dryer or Heat gun and simple green scrubbing usually works. Dont use Bleach to lighten the wood, do not dunk the wood into water. You may have to do this several times until the preservative finally has leached out enought to be acceptable. My Information is that Original Finish on Moisins is varnish top coat, not an oil finish.

Cook it. Seriously, cook it...it drips right off.

I removed the furniture from my Enfield and sprayed it with engine degreaser in the bath tub. After I reassembled the rifle I set it out in the sun for several days, making sure to wipe the wood every hour or so. Worked pretty good but on hot days at the range it still gets sticky.

The following web site has a tutorial about using a steel trash can and a 100 watt light bulb for a heat source. It melts the cosmoline overnight. I prefer orange based cleaners whenever possible.

sounds like most of us has used some sort of heat source and some elbow grease. So I think you have your answer. You just need to figure out what your heat source will be. Light bulbs, oven, the sun... enjoy your rifle.
