Lock of Napoleon's hair fetches $13,000

AUCKLAND - A lock of hair cut from Napoleon Bonaparte's head after he died has sold for US$13,000 at an auction in New Zealand.

Extra phone lines were installed for the sale to cope with an expected rush of international buyers seeking to snip up the hair cut from the head of former French Emperor a day after his death in 1821 while he was in exile on the island of St. Helena.

I remember I was at an auction a few moths ago and they had a lock of Wellington's hair up for sale. Don't think it ever reached the reserve though which was around $3-4,000.

That's actually pretty cheap considering what is being sold.

That would be one expensive conversation starter in your house.

Historians and amateur historians of Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars would have had an orgasm at the Napoleonic Museum in Havana, Cuba. The collection was owned by a rich Italian-Cuban who fled the island when Castro took over, and includes Napoleon's death bed, Marshall Devout's sword, and a lot of other priceless treasures. I was fortunate to go there in 2000, and was the only tourist in the place, with virtual free reign.

^Sounds like a nice visit indeed

At the recent royal wedding H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria wore the diadem that Napoleon had made for his Josephine. Personally I found that to be pretty cool.

Did you take any pictures?

Unfortunately, I didn't, and that's something I regret. The woman in the museum said it was against the rules, but for a dollar, she'd look the other way. I was annoyed at her willingness to let me break the rules in exchange for a small bribe, so didn't take her up on her offer. In retrospect, i should have.

We can rebuild him. Better, stronger, faster.
