China is at the moment going through a major modernization of its military . The J- 10 is the first of the fully built chinese fighters. But there has been a lot about it looking like a clone of the Eurofighter Typhoon and that china built the J- 10 based on stolen plans of the Typhoon.

Having said that is the J-10 as good as the fighters you would find in a Nato air force. And are there plans the build a J-10 version with twin engines like the Typhoon and F22 Raptor. In short is the J-10 a worthy fighter aircraft when compared to American and european fighter jets ?

it does incorporate newest avionic suit to chinese standards(and their standards keep improving)

i don't see J-10 to be poor man's fighter jets though, considering the sophistication(though on paper) will rate it to be at par to any 4.5 gen aircraft.more like a fighter jets for those who doesn't have access to european/american aircraft, due to embargo, restriction, etc(iran, syria, north korea<--if they even afford to own one)

J10A is supposed to equivalent to early model f-16, and the newer j10B will probably be equivalent to a block 52 f-16. Basically a good enough fighter but nothing cutting edge.

And wasn't the Lavi designed from the F-16?

So by extension, the J-10 is a rip-off of the F-16. Right?

IIRC, this caused some strain in US/Israeli relations and military technology sharing.

Actually the J-10A is a bit more than the early F-16s.
It can carry BVR missiles, and even active BVR missiles, has a much better radar and an IRST sensor (something the F-16 never had).
The early F-16s were limited to visual range combat with Sidewinders and guns.

The simple fact is no one really knows except the PLAAF and they aren't talking. It has never faced an opponent in A to A or destroyed a ground target in anger, so we can only guess based on the rather slim public information that is available. As others have said avionics, radars, and weapons are constantly upgraded, who knows how the latest version of the J-10 performs compared to the original. Its no different to 'western aircraft', you can't really compare a Block 20/30 to a Block 50/60 F-16, they are virtually different aircraft. The PLAAF has quite a long history of using its own aircraft back to license built versions of Badger bombers and J-8 etc, so I would think they would be quite capable, but avionics, radar, and weapons are the big questions and we don't have anything to base an analysis on bar speculation

I've always considered the FC-1/JF-17 to fit the bill of a poor man's fighter jet than the J-10. With a price tag of $15 mil. and being marketed as a low cost but capable fighter looking to replace their Mig-21, F-5, Mirage III and other early generation jets it just seems to be one of those jets thats just "good enough" for the job. I don't expect it to compete against the latest gen. 4.5 jets but for a country that can't afford to purchase and support the latest thing it could be a viable low cost option.

Don't forget the tears of virgins.

J-10 is by far PLA's sole legitimate project, they didn't just rip off Israel tech (LAVI wasn't just some F-16 ripoff either), but cooperated widely until US intervened to prevent Chinese from getting TF101 engine copied. They went around it by copying Russian AL-31 and plugged major hole in the avionics by using copy of Russian Zhuk radar, comparable in performance to second generation AN/APG-68. J-10 is nowhere near 3rd word fighter title, I would rate it to more or less equal in capabilities to F-16C block 25/32, but more air superiority oriented.

The pilots flying these J-10s drink tainted milk.
