I have been looking for books that cover the Chinese Civil War in its totality from the late 20s to the 50s. So far with the exception of a few Osprey titles I have had little luck. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Jung Chang's "Mao, The Unknown Story" gives a good overview,

Not about the Chinese Civil War, but "Son of The Revolution", by Liang Heng and Judith Shapiro is a good book about growing up during the Cultural Revolution.

I read that. Good book. I really felt for the guy. Especially when his parents divorced, just so one of them could have a shot at Party membership.

Yeah, it was probably one of the best books I've read this year. I originally asked my grandmother about life during the Cultural Revolution, but she did not want to talk about it, so I talked to my professor and she recommended the book to me.

Jung Chang's "Wild Swans" is another good book about the life of one family during the Cultural Revolution.

There's another book called something like "Life and Death in Shanghai", and I don't recall the author's name, that is good.

Ironically, western sources tend to be the most objective ones regarding the Chinese civil war given that Taiwanese sources usually have a pro-KMT bias whilst the Chinese sources are pro communist.
