Hey everyone, I'm becoming more and more interested in the Angolan Bush War, aka Border War, and the Battle Of Cuita Cuanavale, etc etc. I'm looking for some good books on the subject.

So far I've come across 19 With A Bullet, which I've ordered. Also "The Hot Cold War" by Vladimir Shubin who was involved in the political support side of things on behalf of the Soviet Union.

Can anyone suggest any more? Google has been a bit hit and miss on the subject and I'm hoping MP.net can assist with some decent suggestions and reviews.

Also any websites will be very much appreciated. So far I've found;

http://sites.google.com/site/sabushwarsite/Home/

unfortunately the link to the book site in the bottom left hand corner appears to be no longer valid.

Also this thread on MP.net;

I own a book called "an unpopular war" - basically perspectives from S.A. conscripts who served in in the Bush War.
It was alright, the perspectives were generally amalgamated paragraphs from different people on a set chapter topic.
probably put it a bit lower on your list of books to buy....

You could check out this thread on South African Border War books (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?82920-South-African-Border-War-books)

That's the thread you want.

General Magnus Malan's autobiography My Life in the SADF is good at providing the wider view of the conflict as well.

There's a DVD Attack on Cassinga available as well from status.films@yahoo.com

Busy getting pricing, will probably order it either way.

I once used The Cuban Intervention in Angola, 1965-1991: From Che Guevara to Cuito Cuanavale (Cass Military Studies) (http://www.amazon.com/Cuban-Intervention-Angola-1965-1991-Cuanavale/dp/0415350158/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279746284&sr=8-1) - Hardcover (Apr. 28, 2006) by Edward George for a paper. It contains a chapter about Cuito Cuanavale. One very interesting aspect of the conflict for me was also the involvement of private military companies on both sides.

The entire Grensoorlog (Border War) series (26 episodes) can now be bought online:

http://www.take2.co.za/dvd-grensoorlog-vol-2-dvd-5283360.html

I bought the first set yesterday and can't wait to start watching it... Unfortunately it's only in Afrikaans with NO English subtitles. That might be because there's still a deal in the pipeline for the History Channel.

Good day all, been a long time since I posted hope you are all well.Just my 2 cents worth, I have read a few bush war books and they aren’t too bad, not always accurate but that’s understandable considering that at that stage secrecy was of paramount as you know.So what im saying is any book pre 1994 is not very reliable for the history student anyways. Books written by the OC of a battalion or brigade are a lot better to buy , anyways im babbling so if you want to get a book on the Angolan war buy (Angolan War Final South African phase, that book pretty much sums it all up in one go from the seventies to when resolution 435 was implemented .A new book is coming out called The Black Berea it’s about the South African Armored Corps and should be a good read considering that armour has been in every major operation that the SADF was in.

One more thing I noticed that there are dozens of SA war books coming out, and as far as im concerned its just a get rich quick scheme, Hell maybe I should write a book, about myself in the force, might cure my post traumatic stress disorder or even make me rich, but seriously chose carefully there is a lot of crap out there.

also try googling guerra de libertaçao angola and angola guerra agressao africa do sul. and try and find a bookseller in Luanda and, best of all, marry a chick from Angola siding with MPLA.
