I'm looking for an Eotech to put on an AR-15. I only want it for close quarters, so I'm not worried about magnification. I only plan to use it for protection/target shooting, does anyone have any suggestions?

EOTech XPS and the EXPS are definitely the EOTech sight to get. the side mounted battery resolved the old battery compartment problem and also created a smaller foot print.
Here is an article by Kyle Defoor, ex- NSW Devgrp operator, ex- head instructor at Blackwater and currently employed with Tiger Swan.

I gotta agree the new XPS is the way to go.....much smaller footprint on the rail. If you do want to use magnification, it gives you the extra room for mounting it. I have the older 2 AA version and it is a tight fit on an M4 even with the forearm rail.

I agree. If you absolutely have to go with an EOTech, the XPS is probably your best bet.
ETA: I should qualify my evident reluctance; remember that the EO has a better reticle for combat shooting (if you've trained to use it), but certainly for home defense an Aimpoint makes more sense. Battery life means you can leave it on all the time--it will be ready to roll when you need it in a pinch. Do you want to worry about having to turn on your sight when someone's bumping around in the hall?

Well, I just managed to break my XPS 2-0 EOTech. I am not exactly sure what happened, but after doing some barricade drills this past weekend I noticed that the reticle is no longer holding zero in windage. It also does not track the windage adjustment knob now, but instead makes very large (10 MOA+) jumps when trying to rezero. I checked the mounting screw and the Larue mount, they are solid. The EOTech might have gotten bumped around a little bit against the barricade but it certainly wasn't very rough treatment, as is evident in the fact that it still looks new.

Oh well, time to order an Aimpoint M4S then.

Damn, that sucks, MacG!
Is it covered by warranty?

Yes it is. Aimpoint M4S has been ordered however, I just might get rid of the EOTech after it gets fixed.

I don't blame you. I've got one of the "cheap" $200-250 Bushnell versions, and have wanted to upgrade to an Eotech, but if I can't depend on it 100%, what's the point? I like the Eotechs because I can get a quick target acquisition, but if the things breaks down in a SHTF situation (not that I'm some sort of badass operator or anything! :p), I don't consider it a wise investment.

Hmm, I have taken my old 2 "AA" version through doors and its been smacked against concrete retaining walls, never upset zero or creamed the reticle. I hope they didn't make the newer one less rugged.

I've been reading stuff online about EOTechs failing in training classes and such for a few years now, but this is the first time its happened to me personally. Just because mine failed doesn't mean you'll have the same experience but it definitely kills ones' confidence in the optic.
Gaijin, I am going to stick with Aimpoints from now on. My wife has been beating up on her T-1 for a while now with no problems, we'll see how this M4S performs when it comes in.

Oddly, the EO Techs 554's we were issued worked well for the most part in 18 months training & deployment.
My Cdrs broke at Hood, we still dont know how-Entire screen came loose in the housing.
2 had Battery case levers break at NTC, but still were usable, just needed a Gerber to lift the lever stub.
3 had battery contacts come loose in the casing in Baghdad, but were fixed by Myself in less than 10 minutes
Not bad for the 112 issued.

sorry guys, I did not want to come of as being argumenative.....I am suprised by their failures.....The first rule of optics is that it is has to function all the time, every time. Aimpoint makes some great stuff.

Not at all, HK. I, for one, appreciate your opinion.

So far I like it a lot. Appears to be quite rugged and simple in design, with a huge battery life.
The 2 MOA dot is also much easier to aim with, it doesn't cover my reduced E-types almost completely like the T-1 Micro does.

I have a 552 and I really like it. I've always had aimpoints but I love the EOTECH reticle, AKA "Doughnut of Death"
