I use one that is chambered just like a normal round. I really like it, I don't know if there is a negative other than using them on really bright sunny days. I used one to mount my optics on a G3 (those can be a real bitch) and it saved me a lot of trouble.

Used them to sight Night aiming devices. The thing that sucks is zeroing the boresight before using it to zero the weapon.

Agreed. But once you get them setup they work great!.

I don't rate the cartridge type laser that goes into the chamber, we had alot of inconsistancies with them. The type that uses a rod type set up that sits in the muzzle are pretty good, as Stu said I've primarily for bore sighting Nads etc. We use one that looks like a PEQ, reasonably easy to zero and puts you well inside the ball park for a check zero.

They are great to get your sight/NAD and barrel into roughly the same spot. Generally you are pointing at a target sheet with all the marks on it over 10-20 metres where a little difference can mean a lot at longer ranges. At the end of the day putting rounds through the weapon is the only real zero.

Only problem can be rifles with a flash suppressor. If the end of the suppressor is not true to the barrel (doesn't need to be) it will cause the laser to be off.

good point. I think to be clear, here is what I do:
barrel is naked (no flash/sound supressors)
boresight laser get onto paper at 25 meters.
pull boresight, fit barrel with flash hider.
load gun
shoot target
adjust sights to get sighted properly
move targets out to 100 meters to insure accurate target alignment at range.
note the type of ammo for zero at 100 meters. Ammo of different type will wander on the zero.
clean gun.
try zero again. If zeroed, then you are good to go.
strip clean and bag for next time.

The rod our system uses doesnt get any interferance from the flash suppressor. The longest part of the process is zeroing the boresight laser itself to ensure its alined with the barrel or else the it will give an untrue reading. It comes with rods for 5.56 up to 12.7mm
One thing we'd do after a zero by fire, is recheck the difference between the POA and the laser, measure and note it down so you can do a quick POA/bore check if your unsure of the weapons zero and don't have achance to do a check zero

I use a .45 laser bore sight for my handguns when I put new sights in and have had good results. For rifles, I use a bore sight to get on paper, then I zero the normal way.
I have one I use to get my POA of any new scope/sight as close as possible to the barrels POA. Then re-zero with ammo at the range. As far as I've noticed the gun will never shoot "dead on" even though the laser boresight says you are.

Remember to take the muzzle one out. My friend sent me a pic of someone from his gun clubs rifle after forgetting and firing. Wish I still had the picture. The barrel was peeled back like a banana and luckily nothing was hurt but pride.

I find it's invaluable for my FAL when I've got the Trilux mounted. There was no such thing as "return-to-zero" mounts back then, so I have to re-zero every time I take that thing apart.

I use them at work a ton.
Easy to use and saves ammo at the range when doing the actual zeroing.

I got one that inserts into the chamer like a dummy round. Worked well for my PEQ-2. Kinda have to do it at dusk or late afternoon so you can see both beams with NVG's and line 'em up.
