Besides Israel, Georgia will apparently be the second country after India to buy Israel Military Industries' (IMI) Tavor assault rifle. Republic of Georgia president Mikhail Saakashvili reportedly made the announcement during a visit to IMI last week.
The Georgia Army will procure several hundred Tavor rifles for its special forces. Senior IMI sources said the Georgia Army planned to later increase the order for other units, in addition to its special forces.
The Georgia Army has used the Soviet-built Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifle, since Georgia was part of the USSR until 1991. All Georgia Army units use various versions of the Kalashnikov.

Defense sources said Georgia was considering setting up an ammunition factory in the country in cooperation with IMI, to meet its military needs. Negotiations on the subject are underway.

Is there a cheaper, export version of the Tavor (presumably without the expensive integrated MARS optic)? The standard Israeli version seems like it'd be a bit on the expensive side for countries like Georgia and Croatia.

This is an old news, from 2003.

IDF suspends Procurement of Tavor Assault Rifle
If more than half of the Tavor's components are manufactured in the US, it would be defined as "Made in USA", allowing US military aid to be used for procurement.

A senior IDF source has revealed that the IDF has suspended procurement of the new Tavor assault rifle, produced by Israel Military Industries (IMI). He cited the NIS 2.8 billion cut in the 2003 defense budget as the reason, adding, "We decided to procure the Tavor, but cannot do it now, for a lack of money."

The IDF selected the Tavor for its combat units. The IMI also forged business relationships with US companies. If more than half of the Tavor's components are manufactured in the US, it would be defined as "Made in USA", allowing US military aid to be used for procurement.

The cost of equipping the IDF with the Tavor is tens of millions of shekels. IMI hopes its use by the IDF will help it market the rifle overseas.

IMI chairman Arie Mizrachi told "Globes" in response, "We're operating on the basis of promises by two ministers of defense (Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and Shaul Mofaz, D.M.) that the IDF would procure the Tavor, and we expect the procurement to go ahead."

Too difficult to explain with my english knowledge. He made very good ironic comments about all advertising stuff concerning those things circulating in Israel and around the globe. And how real state of things is differrent compared with ads - good paralleles with stuff he's selling here and about which i know this difference very good :)

Georgia will produce it's own rifles.

Anyway, Tavor is one of the best modern assault rifles you will find.
