View Full Version : Nominations: Pistol World Cup

Gurkha

Hey guys, I had an idea for something. Since we just had the world cup of football, I thought maybe we'd have a world cup of pistols to see which out of a huge selection of choices is everyone's collective favorite. Start off with a nomination round and then have a series of polls eliminating candidates will we end up with a champion.

What do you guys think?

Mods please delete if you find this inappropriate.

My nominations:
SIG P226 (Swiss)
CZ 99 (Serbia)

I have a better idea, since this is essentially just another what gun is the best thread.

How about mp.netters shoot their own private or issued pistols at a designated target with a designated range, and upload the results. Make it an actual pistol world cup. Take the entries and form a bracket. Anything is better than another "which pistol/rifle/gun/tank/specialforces" thread.

actually a great idea, another forum I participate in has a similar thing going on; a range/course is designed and explained in detail and all interested post pix of the results at the end of the month, been going on for years now

What sort of range is best, so should i allow for barometric pressure and temperature gradients?

Should the targets be ewoks?

I think that's actually a great idea. A postal match, but it will be online instead of having to mail something in. We could do this with both rifle and pistol. I'm inspired.

Hows the performance of a 1911 so far? I know its famous for its caliber, but hows the performance?

Where to start...

It can be all over. Dozens of companies market 1911s these days. Some mass produce basic pistols, and some are semi-custom or custom manufacturers. If you were shopping for a plain 1911, you could spend anywhere from $500 to $2500 or more.

A properly tuned and cared for 1911 of just about any age or manufacture will deliver great accuracy, but there are a tremendous number of variables - who manufactured the trigger? Sights? Barrel? Who put it together? You could have a sniper pistol, or you could have trash. My favorite 1911 that I own is one that I more or less built myself on a stock Colt 1991A1. In the decade plus that I've had it, I replaced everything except the frame, slide, firing pin, firing pin stop, and a few pins here and there. All told, I've got probably $1200 in it, but at a 1911 course last year it was more reliable and more accurate (though that is the user more than anything else) than some name brands that cost twice as much out of the gate.

A Glock is reliable in a variety of forms and configurations, but it's kind of like a Volkswagen. 1911s can be like a $50 Nash or a hand built Nascar. They can perform like trash, or it can be like getting a kiss from God.

I had a colt 1991A3 (like a 1911), and sold it and got a glock 21 SF, which I prefer 3 reason,

1> slide recoils closer inline to arm = better control
2> 13 rounds instead of 7
3> weapons is very very robust.

on the plus side of the 1911 family, they are fine looking firearms, really fine looking and very reliable.

Glock 17 here. My only complaint about it is the trigger safety, other than that I have zero complaints.
The first pistol I started shooting with was my grandfathers 1911 which I absolutely sucked with.
I'd like to join in but it's next to near impossible to find 9mm where I live, I've almost given up on trying to find it.

I hope not. I own a Glock 17 and 19, and carry a Glock 17 when I'm at work overseas. I am a 1911 guy, but if TEOTWAWKI comes and I can only grab one pistol, Glock 17 it is. Like I said, a 1911 can be a $50 Nash or a $500K NASCAR.

I don't think that most people who have Glocks do anything at all to them. I installed Heinie sights on mine, which made a remarkable difference in accuracy as opposed to the factory sights. It's awesome.

I know i can headshot fist sized targets at well over 300 feet in the dark with a rifle, so i figure with a shotgun i should win.

Thank you for considering us upsidedowners with retarded gun laws. I can access pistols, but would need to actually plan it in advance, and im not one for actually being bothered to plan stuff. My last hunting trip was organised overnight.

I have two options. One is to fly to Melbourne and visit a friend of mine who shoots international pistol comps here and overseas, or another mate near here, who runs a security company. Both have a nice collection, but tying them down is another. If i get time, id like to be involved, as although i have shot pistols before, i have only done it for fun.

BTW the chances of me going to Melbourne are low.

I'm glad this idea has really kicked off, too bad I don't own a pistol lol. In fact, thanks to Massachusetts strict gun control, I can't even buy a rifle because I'm too lazy to take a "hunters saftey course" which is required for an FID. I'd gladly pay the $100 dollars for the FID if I didn't have to take the course. I don't plan on hunting, and i've been around firearms long enough to not be a ****tard with them.

Sounds like a great idea. I own a Browning HP and shoot IDPA here, and I have enjoyed MP.net for way too long and finally something I can talk a about and not be a complete wanker.

I live close to Johannesburg, so any excuse to throw more lead is always a super idea.

Shoot quite a bit and whats funny is that the 1911's are allways giving someone a hard time(You tend to notice the 1911 drivers by their range of profanities). But I have noticed it just take time to figure out everything about the 1911 untill it runs 100%. Lota guys have to tweak the mags, springs & ammo(most reload here that shoot IPDA).

But I must admit there is something really sexy about a 1911.

Can not wait to see what you can come up with in regards to a "internet shoot".

Well as this topic does not quantify what the winning characteristics will be.
The M1911 is used for military match shooting in the US.
The DP-51 is the best 9mm combat pistol I have ever seen.
.38 Special is the most accurate round when fired from a revolver. .22 long Rifle after that, followed by the .45 ACP for standard handgun rounds. 9mm is far less accurate.
I have not worked a great deal with .40 or 10mm, but found the .50 Action Express to be very accurate, and could hit man sized targets at 200 yds with a great deal of ease.
.22 Colt fired very well right out of the box.

So what kind of shooting are we talking about. Pins, silhouette, target, combat?

@Bacon - nice M&P is that skateboard tape or stippling?

As far as the OP, I agree with James. The 1911 is a great pistol - but it needs a lot of love and attention. I read of guys that get massive amount of work done on custom/semi-custom guns to get the gun to right just perfect and even then it can be finicky. My own is a Para-Ordnance that I shoot occasionally and never carry.

If I had a choice on a gun to carry I'd grab a Glock 19. Not sexy, but they will run all day.

I guess we need to put some work into this. If everyone agrees, I'll head the effort. First things first, let's decide what exactly we want for various courses of fire. Let's start with the pistol. We can use regular qualification courses for military or law enforcement, something like the 10-8 drill or the Hackathorn standard, or make up our own. We can shoot a combination of traditional drills and come up with a composite score, something I think would be a better indicator of shooter skill than a single, all encompassing drill. Something to consider, (I'll start a new thread with a poll) is, aside from the fact that a lot of our members don't enjoy the same freedoms vis a vis firearms that we do here in the states (at least in Tennessee), even in America a lot of ranges are pretty restrictive in the type of shooting they allow. Specifically, some are very restrictive on shooting from the draw, shooting multiple targets, etc.

I'm not a member of any ranges in my area. A good friend has a membership to a nice facility and sometimes takes me along, but they are very uptight about rapid fire and tactical shooting. For the tactical stuff, I and other MP.netters in NW Oregon/SW Washington (Wildcat? Meinteil? Hollis?) might be able to set something up in a wooded area that's open to the public. I won't have any spare time until November, though.

Me and my Springfield 1911A1 Loaded/Sig P226 .40 are in on any competition you come up with! I love my 1911, shoots better than anything else I've handled (for how I shoot anyways, the best gun in the world is the one YOU shoot the best with). If nothing else, you cannot argue with the damage a .45 ACP does on impact. Also, I am just not a fan of DA/SA handguns. just my opinion.

BDP Wannabee

I also do not like the DA/SA guns. Some are very sexy, but damn I have seen too many stuff go wrong. Ammo not feed right, light strikes, stopages.

I might sound like a Browning salesman, but my Browning HP has the proud distinction of going bang, every time I pull the trigger. Even if its only a 9mm. (would love to get a high capacity .45 para ordenance) Only problems due to my bad, untrained usage.

A friend of mine shot with it at a local IDPA shoot and it was giving problems with the weak hand stage and I thought f&ck, whats happening to my gun. Luckily it turned out he had a weak grip.

Our ranges are pretty flexible here in dark Afrika. And I am sure there are plenty of South Africans willing to play....... Just wait a month or so, my Tacticool pants have been ordered and should be delivered one of these days.
