Hello!:)

I have some interrogations in my mind right now, about winter coats. I'd really like to get a warm goretex jacket that I could wear in winter; mainly for everyday use such as outdoor activities or just to be able to walk outside without having to freeze. I was considering an ECWCS acu goretex jacket level 6.But these looks like it's just several lining of gore tex materials, no lining or such. Can it be worn on itself? If I'm right it needs to be combined with other layers to be effective ?

When I'm talking about winter, it's the canadian one; the jacket needs to keep me warm when temperatures are as cold as -40 degrees.Through wind and snow.

The other choice I've looked for is the Taïga cpa jacket, in M90 camo, wich is quite a cool camo, nice colours  . Quite expensive though...very... In the place I live we have similar prices for winter coats wich are produced by a company called Kanuk. Those coats ranges from 600$ to 1000$ and are made in Quebec province. It's civilian; and they are big coats, wich restrains you a little bit. Just to say that If my choice tends toward the taïga, I expect to feel as warm as in a kanuk one (wich are considered to be among the best wintercoats here in quebec).

So if I can get some feedback about those two coats, it'll be very much appreciated!

Thank you very much! ;)

The ECWCS/Gore tex jacket won't do enough to keep you warm in the kind of temps you describe. That type of jacket is more geared towards keeping you dry. To stay warm you need to wear ample layers beneath it (depending on your activity level).

For the type of extreme cold you talk about, a heavily insulated parka would be the better choice:

Like Waterman said the ECWCS isn't really warm. It's just the Gore-Tex fabric. No lining... You should at least get a fleece jacket for layering. I do have this jacket in my collection, let me know if you want some detail pics.

I definately wouldn't use Goretex in cold climate. It doesn't breath at all that well, so sweat will be problem when moving about. And since we are talking about sub-zero temps water falling from the sky will not be a problem either. There is no reason for Goretex. Pick something suited for winter instead.

For such temperatures I would go either for a jacket with goose down filling or with Thinsulate™.

Thanks alot for the advices :) . Yeah goretex isn't that much effective when having to evacuate sweat... Last winter I did used a small winter coat, not effective enough to be worn on itself, combined with a acu parka desgined to be worn as an overcoat; wich was in fact, an effective system. I prefer to wear defferent layers so you can adapt to any climate than having to wear a big coat that suits only for very cold days.

Does somebody have any info about the cpa jacket ? :|

http://www.coldskills.com/webshop_csc_eng/index.php

They say it's made of a base liner, with 2 layer of goretex materials, wich are hanging loose from the lining, so the cold does'nt reach those lining, thus avoiding the sweat to freeze or something. Says it can be effective up to -40 C ... Those are issued to special forces I think ? Must be a good piece of equipment if combined with good clothes underneath ?

Thanks! p-)

I have a smock (NR08) from them. It's a step down from their heavy duty winter jacket. It is about as well made and thought out piece of clothing as I have seen.

I thought of getting the jacket you are looking at but could not justify the expense since it doesn't get below freezing too often where I live.

hi,
you can try carinthia HIG jacket and trousers. I'm very happy on them.

comfort is -15, but you can go lower with proper underwear + fleece liner
