I've been thinking about buying something besides Remington gold value pack hollow point bullets for my R597. I've heard about .22 caliber shotshells, does anyone have any experience with them? I've tried looking for reviews online about them, but only come up with pellet guns.

What are you shooting with it?
I've seen two types, one had a cylindrical plastic jacket containing the shot, the other was crimped at the business end much like a blank round.
I wouldn't have much faith in them even for varmints; maybe mice or small birds.

I've read that it's a 12" spread at 20 feet, depending on the size and amount of BBs that could be like pissing in the wind.
I'd be target shooting a box and from there on depending on if I like them, either back to the hollow points or use the shot shells for squirrel control.

They're good for a few meters, after that you can't hit **** with them.

^What he said. Wonder if they would cycle through the little belt fed MG's. I still have fun with them.

I remember a guy using then when I last went to the range a few years ago. It was christmas so it was competition time and one of the challenges was an axe blade set up with two balloons either side it, the trick being you have to get the bullet to split and pop both balloons with one bullet. So one guy rolls up with a Winchester-esque underlever rifle and fires. Both balloons move, neither pop and he got loads of stick for using shot shells
The point being that this was at 10m if i remember correctly so it gives you an idea of the range and penetration of these things. Great laugh though.

We had these when I was a kid. There was a barn not far away where we had Rabbits, and there were always lots of mice eating the rabbit food.
It was very funny hunting mice with that little shotshells. It was usually less than 8 meter range but you had to be fast when you switch the light on.

x2 I have used the blue ones (referring to the pic) on a 3 1/2 inch S&W Magnum and it is not good for beyond 10 feet or so, but im sure a longer barrel may add another feet :P

Shot shells are great to impress your friends while shooting at balloons.

You can use them when you do mounted Western cowbody shooting, or they use powder and wadding in the 45 Colt ammo.

Or you could move up to .44 magnum.

so basically, if you're not within humping range of the target, don't bother?

Basically.
I've shot rats with shot shells from a .22 S&W revolver inside granite pig stys (when I don't want a hollow point ricocheting about), but you have have to be close.
I've read that they have been used for snakes in some places.

Eh, for snakes just get a Judge, the .410 / 45 combo in a hand gun is awesome for trail carry

I haven't any experience with the 22r shot shells. But I did try these rounds in 45 acp.
I originally bought them for snakes & small pest around the house. To my surprise they cycled in my 1911 government model just fine. (wasn't expecting that) They pattern an 11 inch circle @ 10 feet with a nice even spread of pellets.
Still waiting on "SNAKEZILLA" to show so I can gun it down. So I'll have to wait before I can report on the effectiveness of this cartridge. B)

I have used the Remington-type cartridges form a .22lr carbine, at distances of 5/10 mts. Shells spread 60cm. at 5 mts, (+/- 20"), and I could count + 100 tiny holes in the paper I shoot.
Definitvely, they are for mices and fun, nothing serious. Needless to say, they could cause a lot of damage to a person at short range.
An extra detail: when I shot them using the semi-auto carbine, they couldnīt "move the bolt" back, so I had to move it manually it after every shot. And in some cases (maybe they were old cartridges) I had to remove them by using a cleaning rod.

That would be a giant pain to have to break out a cleaning rod everytime you shot a shell.

I read an article in field in stream years ago that said Col. Hathcock would shoot flying palmeto bugs in his back yard with .22 shotshells. He did this for wing shooting practice.
For those that don't know, palmeto bugs are like giant flying cockroaches.

My pictures are freezing up everytime I try to load them, but they'll be on here soon enough.
Took the R597 out again today to the gravel pit, this time we had a box of Remington lightning bolts(or are they called thunderbolts?), winchester plinkers, a box of 50 federal Arms 1500 fps rounds stingers(?) and a box of 20 CCI shot shells. The box of the shotshells claimed they go as far as 250 yards, it lied. I started off with a magazine of 10 shotshells at 35 feet to a dirt berm. I fired 3 shotshells in a row(actually managed to cycle 3 shotshells in a semi automatic rifle) before I had to manually **** it each shot. We checked through a scope for the next couple shells, no dust and no disturbance to mark where I was shooting. We then propped a bright yellow plastic 20 gallon bucket lid onto the berm and started at 15 feet and worked our way in with 5 foot increments. At 5 feet were we able to see the impact, though I got hit in the hand by ricochet while he got a BB up his nose (Stupid I know, but we were getting frustrated at the lack of hits). When we inspected the lid, the BBs were either on the surface-deep enough to stick, or were just below the surface of the plastic.
I guess the shotshells are kind of a novelty buy, like those cardboard party crackers that have paper hats in them, not real effective at their job but a new experience. They are however very quiet to shoot, so if anyone wanted to stealth kill mice or worms on sidewalks while in the city, these would be ideal.
The other ammo was a mixed bag of fun, most of the jams and misfeeds came from the Winchester plinkers. The only double jam I had came from the Remington Thunder/Lightning bolts when the primer failed to detonate on one of them. I however thanked myself for not getting a 25 round clip, the other fire arm there was a Ruger 10/22 with a banna clip. Damn thing kept misfeeding and jamming.
I've always been afraid that it would damage the barrel of my .22.
I dunno just shooting birdshot out of a rifle just doesn't make good logic to me.

It's lead shot in plastic. What's it going to do to the rifleing?

Really? I thought he was doing it just for a joke but its actually impressive? Awesome, I'll have to buy some and up my 'range cred'.

3 shotshells worth of holes at 5 feet in light wind, ignore the .22 holes.

What about the .22 cartrige that is crimped??? Maybe its not hard on the rifleing, I guess Im no expert. lol. A buddy of mine shoots lead shot shells out of his rifled 12 gauge barrel frequently. That cant be good for the rifleing?? Correct me if im wrong.... Regardless when I was kid i fired that .22 bird shot at a piece of wood from about 10 yards away, and every single one of those pellets came back and hit me in my face. Luckily I was wearing my glassess. Lesson learned//

checked on Gander Mt online last night, apparently they're all sold out of shotshells, either I'm unable to tell a good product, or everyine who read this thread ran out and bought a box to try.

are there ways to manufacture your own shotshells? Perhaps with more powder and larger bbs?
