Ah, you're both wrong. It's clearly a Stormtrooper One:

He's obviously a Stormtrooper out of uniform...an offense Darth Vader will sure point out upon this trooper's next review ;)

Yup, he's a Filipino alright. I should know, I'm a Filipino myself. ;-)

That picture was taken a couple of weeks ago (July 27). Failed coup attempt by about 350 soldiers. It started at midnight. They took over this upscale hotel in the middle of the business district's shopping area, rigged explosives (C4) all over the place, demanded that our president step down, blah blah blah. Ended 22 hours later without bloodshed after negotiations. The participants are gonna be tried by court martial. Signs point to the fact that they were used by a bunch of opposition politicians. Sounds familiar.

The participants are mostly from elite units. The soldier in the picture seems to be a member of the Phil. Navy's SWAG (Special Warfare Group) judging from his uniform. The SWAG was trained by the US Navy SEALs. There are also participants from the LRC (Light Reaction Company) that was formed a few months back and then trained by US Army Special Forces to go after the Abu Sayyaf Group (an Islamic terrorist group affiliated with Al Qaeda) in the southern island of Mindanao (Muslim majority there). Also members of the Phil. Scout Rangers and the Phil. Marines. Led by a bunch of junior officers (many from the Phil. Military Academy's class of '95). Battle-hardened group, too. Veterans of fighting in Mindanao.

Barrett .50 cal and Robar 7.62mm sniper rifles all over the place (mostly from US military assistance programs). A lot of M4s, M60s, M240s, some Steyr AUGs, plus the standard-issue M-14s and M-16s. Could have been really bloody if it came to a firefight.

Kabayan. :-)

Final tally of the sniper rifles at the rebel soldier's disposal: 6 Robar 7.62mm and 4 Barrett .50 cal sniper rifles. Those oughta be enough to secure the hotel's two towers.

There was an article in SOF magazine about Special Forces in Iraq. It detailed the Special Forces package Humvees they were using, the drivers all had Sterling SMGs next to their seats. Just thought that was kind of interesting, if anyone cares.

why would they have sterlings rather than MP5's or other SMG?

US Special Forces with Sterling? Rather strange..

Strange indeed, thats what I thought too. The article said nothing of why they had them (as far as I remember.). There were 2 pictures of different vehicles both had Sterlings next to the drivers seat.

Which is pretty odd,as they're crap anyway!!
My experiences with them were that hitting someone with a full mag, would do the same damage as shooting them!!None of the jocks liked them in the AT platoon!!

Sterling L34A1 or Sterling Mk.5

The Soldier of Fortune magazine said the SF guys prefered the Sterling due to its easier manipulation while in the vehicle. I guess with the mag to the side its easier to shoot out of side windows and reload and such while driving, just my guess.

this doesn't make much sense to me. i am asking the same question, why sterlings, and not mp5s or whatever......my mind is boggled.

I don't know, but I would trust the SF guys enough to think they had a good reason for picking a Sterling over an MP-5.

Sterlings ... why don't we go the whole hog and pick up and old SAS jeep where everyone has a fixed gun ..

The jeeps the SAS used in WW2 came from the US, i think, they were much better suited to fixing the weapons than the Brit ones were so David Sterling managed to nab a load of them.

Tane, just a quibble, do you mean the LRDG ( long range desert group), think it was that and not LRRG ... ;) ... just for info, i'm not having a go or anything.

A small group of dozens of Iraqis shout anti-American slogans after claiming that U.S. forces attacked them in the Al-Sadr City district in Baghdad, Iraq on Wednesday Aug. 13, 2003. According to the protesters, a U.S. military helicopter overflew a tower where religious flags were flying and tried to take down a flag and later opened fire on the people. Stormtrooper guns going cheap in Baghdad I see.... ;)

I read that piece in SOF and thought it strange too. Never fired a Sterling but have fired an F1 which is a similar weapon apart from the top mount mag- none too impressed with it. I guess it must be that the Sterling is easy to prop on the doorframe of the Humvees one handed like someone mentioned?

The Stirling is a piece of crap. It's accurate to about 40 feet, jams like you wouldn't believe and has the stopping power of an airsoft pistol. It's one and only saving grace for those that used it was it's size.

As to firing it rested on a door, I'm deeply sceptical. As anyone of the 'more mature' Brits will testify, any pressure on the magazine is pretty much guaranteed to cause a stoppage (hence the handguard grip rather than the sten style mag grip).

SWAG guys do cross-train with American Navy SEALs, among other SOF foreign SOF units. US SEALs share knowledge with SWAG but most of the time, SWAG, just like our Force Recon and Army Scout Rangers do not rely on American tactics simply because it do not work in our setting here in the Philippines (no offense meant fot the Americans here)...They tried incorporating American tactics here, but it simply do not work here, especially when it comes to small unit tactics...By the way, the SWAG guys have their own distinct uniforms, they normally call it SWAG Tiger-Stripe, almost the same as with the Vietnam-era US Tiger Stripes, only, if you'll notice, the "stripes" are more prevalent....And their training is tough! among the toughest in the world!...it's really a good thing that soldiers from the Government didn't pushed through with the assault, because it'll be a tough fight for them. :)
