If you were at a bar, alone, would you mind if some stranger (vertically challenged and with a kinda big nose, but well-dressed and in shape) sat down nearby and said something along the lines of, "hey, how ya doin, I'm Brian." Or would you want him to have some cute line or joke or something, before you tell him to piss off? We've all heard the ultra-cheezy pick-up lines, but seriously, how would YOU want to be approached in this sort of situation?

EDIT--I now realize that this paragraph doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a grammatical standpoint. I blame the porter. But I think the point got across anyway.

Of course, this is all purely hypothetical, and would have nothing to do with the fact that I was just at a bar where an attractive girl came in alone, ordered a drink, sat there for 15 minutes, drank it, and left, while I was trying to figure out how to introduce myself.

Personally... I would just prefer the friendly approach. I've had it happen both ways, and the cheesy pick up lines go nowhere. Funny is good too....

What not to do:
Last Friday night I was out, and a guy came up and started talking to me. I'm not sure he ever looked at my face. He asked me a couple of questions then he interrupted my answer to say....
"I just have to say... you have beautiful [insert slang term for breasts here]. I just said.... does that approach usually work for you?
The guy couldn't have picked me out of a line up... unless it was from the waist up.
Needless to say.... our conversation ended there.....

Another guy sat down at the table (I had joined some friends) a little bit later.... he was nice and funny. He bought me a couple of beers, and we had a nice conversation.

Some women may respond to the direct and/or crass approach, but I do not. I suppose it depends on the woman. I'd go with nice guy. The fewer women you offend... the better off you'll be.....

Listen to her, she's pretty smart. ;)

No matter what you look like, just talk to a girl, treat her with respect, and act genuine. If she still isn't interested, then forget her. She's probably too shallow and immature anyway.

That sounds like a fine way to start talking to a girl. It makes sense. But I find that questions like "how are ya" leave not much room for a good answer. I don't know, i just personally hate the question, but I think most other people don't mind so much. One line that I kinda liked even though it wasn't that great was "would you like some company?" It was just a sweet thing to say because it gave me a way out and made it obvious to him if I wanted to talk to him or not. Anyways, just a suggestion :)

I'll usually don a thick foreign accent of some kind, and sneer "how much for all of the sexes?" or "are you unclean?".

That's...a really, really good line. I'm gonna remember that. I'll agree with the "how ya doin" stuff. No room for an answer.

Good luck with the romance scene bud. I was/am like that, very shy about going up to women. The first night I saw my future wife, I took so long working up my courage to go talk to her that I got deployed before I so much as said hello. Don't take as long as that. ;)

I already knew that story, tane... and it still cracked me up. It's a good thing she wasn't in a big hurry, huh? Apparently she knew a good thing when she saw one.... ;) I bet you were all decked out in your dress uniform too weren't you? :D

No doubt about that, Molly.... He'll deny it (cause he's modest like that...) but tane is sexay. Sort of a soldier/secret agent man/ p-) all wrapped up into one.....

such a shame that he's taken! :(
