HELSINKI - Canada won the silver medal at the world junior hockey championship Monday, losing the gold medal game 4-3 to the United States.

The winning goal came after Canadian goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury deflected the puck, which bounced off Canadian defenceman Braydon Coburn and into the net.

Canada had been up 3-1 after two periods, but the U.S. scored three unanswered goals in the third.

The win is the first gold for the U.S. at the world juniors and the third straight silver for Canada.

Nigel Dawes scored twice for Canada, while Anthony Stewart had one goal.

Patrick O'Sullivan netted two for the U.S., while teammates Dan Fritshe and Ryan Kesler added one goal each.

Canada's last gold medal was in 1997 when they defeated the U.S. 2-0 in Geneva.

Earlier in the day, Finland won the bronze medal with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

it's not our fault we are awesome.
If canada is so great in hockey, how come you have lost 2 of the teams from bigger cities (Winnipeg/Quebec) and why does america have such a bigger audiance compared to canada. Wait wait, and why do we have so many damn teams in the US? We are every bit as good at hockey as you are. Deal with it.

The fact is that the U.S. has more money and a bigger population. And i know for a fact there is a bigger viewing audience in Canada than in the states for hockey. If you break it down like this, the U.S., Swedes, Finns, Czechz, Russians and to a lesser extent the Slovaks, can all create one team full of all star players, while at the same time canada can create 3.
Im not annoyed that the americans won the gold. In fact i think its good. Not as good as if Canada won though ;), but good for the fact that the sport should become more popular now in the states.

But, you plainly said that Canada owns the Americans at hockey all the time - so this should be no excuse, right? Or is so that you make excuses like this only when you lose? C'mon, be a man and take a loss.

I guess ignorance is bless am i correct?
America or to be exact, The United States of America, has some very good players. They dont have many, but the players that make it tend to be very good. i.e. Leech and Roenick.
The players dont move to the United States, they play for teams with clubs in the U.S. some even owned by Canadians, i.e. Phoenix Coyotes.
If they were paid to play for a team in Mexico they would go the same as they do to the states.

Ratamacue

And where do you think the cup stays all the time?
In Canada! In the Hockey hall of fame! IN hockey town! (toronto not detroit like you yanks like to think for some reason). Im glad I finally found this breakdown of the nationality of NHL players as of the 2002-2003 season. Now pay attention people, this is not complicated.

From http://www.wch2004.com/country_breakdown.html

Percentage of Canadian players in the NHL: 53.6%
Percentage of American players in the NHL: 13.0%
Percentage of Czech Republic players in the NHL: 8.2%
Percentage of Finnish players in the NHL: 5.0%
Percentage of German players in the NHL: 0.7%
Percentage of Russian players in the NHL: 6.9%
Percentage of Slovakian players in the NHL: 2.9%
Percentage of Swedish players in the NHL: 6.2%
The rest of the 4%, give or take, come from other countries.

We dont have much to brag about. But our hockey players and our love for the game is unmatched anywhere in the world. Its not just a game, its a way of life. Who else took the afternoon off to watch the game, and felt just as bad as the players in that room. They felt sick to their stomach after the loss, and so did we.

The game was as disappointing a loss as they come. The Americans played a good game, and I would much rather lose to them then the Russians. Nice to see the North American style dominating the europeans.

EvanLloyed if Canadians were so superior over Americans in hockey then your team wouldn't lose a Championship by a 4-3 score. So, why are you arguing because you guys got bitch slapped?I just put you on my "biggest moron" list for saying the only reason we won was because your goalie cleared the puck and it bounced off your defensman's skate, so there. I forgot the other 3 goals for the Americans happened to be scored the same way, sike! No one here is trying to change the fact that Canada won more gold in hockey then everyone else, and that you make up the majority of NHL. But you saying you're so much better then us after you just lost a Championship is gay. You're bragging about Canada being thebest of the best, so guess what, the best of the best don't take second place in a game and that's exactly what you guys did, 2nd place. In a war, winners kill losers get killed, and this time Canadians got killed, we're number one, we are the best now despite your past achievements, so suck it up.

Well, it's almost preseason time, and a lot of free agent signings are going on, so I figured we could get the ball rolling early on a Hockey thread for this year.

Red Wings sign Bertuzzi to one year deal.

The Red Wings made another addition to its roster on Tuesday afternoon with the signing of forward Todd Bertuzzi to a reported one-year deal worth $1.5-million. The signing puts Detroit over the salary cap heading into next season but the club is expected to get cap relief in the form of Andreas Lilja, who will likely start the season on long-term IR (post-concussion syndrome.) Bertuzzi joins Patrick Eaves and Jason Williams as Red Wing free agent signees. Bertuzzi had 15 goals and 44 points in 66 games with the Calgary Flames last season.

I didn't like him the first time around, and I doubt I will this time. He used to be a goon that could put up numbers, now he's just a goon.

In an unexpected move Tuesday, the NHL filed its own bid in U.S. bankruptcy court to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes in an effort to keep the franchise in Arizona.
The bid comes one day after Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie set a Sept. 14 deadline to buy the bankrupt franchise for $212.5 million US and immediately move it to Hamilton, Ont., with or without the league's consent.
"Today, the league filed its own bid to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes' franchise out of bankruptcy in an effort to maximize the likelihood that the club ultimately will be sold to an acceptable purchaser who is committed to operating the franchise in Glendale," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.

It's the league that tries too hard. It's trying to sell itself to a population that just can't relate to the sport. Much like the NBA here in Vancouver, there's some fans that support the team, but not enough consistent fans to make it a viable business.

There's alot of people in Edmonton scratching their heads right now. The general consensus is that it was one of the seven seals has been broken.

$1.125 mil for a guy that could get 20-30 goals. F'n A!

And if it helps smooth over the organization's image to other players then all the better.

Though with the number of small skilled forwards, there's alot of rumblings that a trade must be on the way.

Harper to press Obama on U.S. protectionism

Updated Tue. Sep. 15 2009 9:52 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he will press the U.S. government on the so-called "Buy American" clause when he visits Washington this week, including a provision that has wreaked havoc on Canadian NHL teams.
Canada's six NHL teams have been scrambling to find alternative travel routes since it was announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation was banning Canadian charter planes from flying between two U.S. cities.
"This is a serious problem," Harper told CTV News Channel's Power Play in an exclusive interview. "This is another protectionist measure . . . and this situation will not be allowed to continue. I've been very clear."
I'm certainly glad that we are focusing on the important issues.

As long as somebody explains or can provide a link to a more in-depth description to how this is supposed to go down, I'm game.

What software is used etc.?

It's all on the web using Yahoo's hockey pool.

http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/

Everyone picks players in the draft to score points. Those players earn you points by scoring goals, assists, penalty minutes, etc. Goalies by wins and shutouts.

Last season it was (I think) 2 C, 2 LW, 2 RW, 2 D, 2 G, plus 4 guys in reserve and 1 or 2 on the IR.

You can trade players and also waive & sign free agents.

Exact rules will be discussed briefly, but I think last years we can use as a starting point.

Goal = 1 pt
Assist = 1 pt
PIM = 1 pt per 5 minutes

Goalie Win = 1 pt
Goalie Shutout = 1 pt

2 Centers
2 Left Wing
2 Right Wing
2 Defence

IR = Injured Reserve. You can place 2 players on IR and you can replace them in your lineup so you still get some points, and you get to keep the injured players until they play again.

I'm trying to set up the pre-draft now following the list you made, nullterm, but I don't get one thing, - 2 IR. What's that?

If a player is hurt and placed on the Injured Reserve, it means you can put him in your IR spot so he's not taking up a Bench or normal slot. And then pick up another player to fill in until he's better.

So if you get Gaborik who (as usual) is out for 4 months with a bum hip, you place him on IR so you still have him, and scoop up a free agent if you like. Then when Gaby is healthy, waive a player to make room for his return.

Also, note that if you have a guy on your Bench, he won't actually score any points for you. You'll need to move him from the Bench to an appropriate roster space (like C, LW, etc) for his stats to count.

You also have a limit of 82 games per slot that can be played. So use them wisely.

Hopefully we get more guys. Where's everyone from last year's pool?

Hockey Canada’s Yzerman plans to call Gretzky soon

DETROIT (AP)—Hockey Canada executive director and Detroit Red Wings vice president Steve Yzerman plans to call Wayne Gretzky to find out his plans for the future.

Yzerman said in a phone interview Saturday that he has been in contact with Gretzky to talk about his experiences at the Olympics.

Gretzky resigned Thursday as the coach and director of hockey operations for the financially struggling Phoenix Coyotes. He led Hockey Canada during the previous two Olympics.

Yzerman was appointed last year to take over for Gretzky as Canada gears up for a bid to win men’s hockey gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Yzerman has been a Red Wings vice president since retiring three years ago.

Funny, after the mp.net draft last night I came into work with a link to this blog entry in my inbox. The writers are experts in "distressed" industries/companies/franchises etc. which is why they are analyzing the NHL. Here are the first few paragraphs:

"With all of the wailing and howls of protest regarding increased regulation, salary caps and bonus eliminations coming out of certain sectors of the North American economy, it is (perhaps to some) refreshing to see corporate executives in at least one industry marching in total lock step with the US Government’s attempts to fight economic reality. The current debacle in Phoenix regarding the fate of the Coyotes hockey franchise there has opened the window wide on the leadership approach and decision-making style that holds sway in the NHL today.

The mindset appears to be not too dissimilar to the mentality that holds that debt problems can be fixed with more debt, that the Fed can expand credit without limit or ill effect, and the requirement that the consumer sector retrench and shore up its finances can be successfully challenged with “Cash for Clunkers”, outright handouts and other blandishments that will theoretically be paid for not by today’s beneficiaries but by tomorrow’s taxpayers.

Faced with a soft economy, a significant proportion of NHL clubs (not only Phoenix) are in distress; if it is looking ahead at all, the NHL is probably seeing lower attendance figures, lower corporate marketing spend and lower revenues generally. Some of the owners may be looking “over the next rise” in this fashion. Unfortunately and more to the point, the Phoenix debacle however shows that the current NHL leadership has chosen to divert attention from more pressing commercial concerns, to spurn the injection of fresh outside investment capital into its business, and to effectively act in defense of toxic investment decisions that it itself promoted to itself.

That the NHL leadership has chosen to allow this situation to deterorate to the point where it must participate in a courtroom display centering on the efficacy of its business plans has to be counted as a “first” in business history."

It's long, but it's very good. The whole thing is here:

Melnyk fires parting shot at Heatley camp, says he felt betrayed

OTTAWA -- Breaking his silence yesterday, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk admitted he felt betrayed by Dany Heatley and is glad the winger is gone.
After demanding a trade in May, Heatley was finally dealt to the San Jose Sharks for Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo last month.
While Melnyk wants to put the controversy behind the Senators, who open the season tomorrow in New York against the Rangers, he conceded the situation left a "sour taste" in his mouth and would advise anybody against signing players to front-end-loaded, long-term contracts.
After signing Heatley to a six-year, $45-million contract extension in October 2007, and shelling out more than $14 million to him in the last 12 months -- including a $4-million bonus on July 1 -- Melnyk found it disrespectful.
"I spoke directly across the table, with (Heatley) and his agents," said Melnyk. "When you make that type of commitment to a player where you front-end load a contract, you expect, just as a human being, when you shake somebody's hand -- never mind a 130-page contract -- that they will be reciprocal to it.
"That's my biggest disappointment: these people, I mean just as human beings, (shouldn't) do that to anyone.
"Yes, it has left a sour taste, but you've got to forget about that. You turn around, you learn from it and you'll never do it again. I guarantee you, anybody else out there should be aware this can happen to (them) if the other side is not genuine."
Melnyk believes Heatley's actions set a bad precedent for all sports.
"That whole situation sent shivers not only through every GM and owner in the hockey world, but in sports in general," said Melnyk. "This is the worst thing that could happen to a team that wants to progress. He hurt himself. He hurt all his teammates. He hurt the organization.
"I don't necessarily put the blame on him directly, but I think it's the people around him that leaked it out. That's a disaster. It's unconscionable what happened. You have to hand it to Bryan. Working with handcuffs, he was able to pull off a good deal. We made the best out of what was a bad situation. I'm glad it's done, over with and out the door. Wish (him) luck. If there's anything good that came out of this, it's toughened up our team. We have more of a 'we'll show you' attitude and I think they'll come together as a real team now and show their stuff."
Melnyk gave his blessing when Murray told him he was stepping up efforts to move the disgruntled Heatley on the first day of training camp.
"I'm not there, but even if I was there, Bryan, the coach and the players have to live and breathe this every day," said Melnyk. "What we don't need is a distraction of any sort and I don't care how good you are. I don't care if you're a 50-goal scorer. If you've got that kind of person in the dressing room, those 50 goals will be meaningless if it's going to affect all the players. Now, it's a nice, clean start."

Did Heatley even return the 4 million bonus? If he didn't, I would hate him forever. Melynk shouldn't have even paid him it when he wanted out.

nullterm
10-03-2009, 02:21 AM
No. He happily waited through the deadline and the Sens had to pony up $4 million this season without his shadow even darkening the dressing room.

Edmonton had the deal in hand willing to take him before the deadline so they were willing to pay the lump sum for Ottawa. But Heater decided to stick it to both cities. And he finally got his wish to play for the Sharks.

It would be the only appropriate outcome. Heatley needing a massive karmic smackdown. Sharks being the mega dominant monster that flops up on the beach dead as soon as the regular season is over.

But still way too early to judge.

Fasel on Bettman: 'He's completely wrong'

International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel has an answer for Gary Bettman.
In response to the NHL commissioner's comments that 2010 might be the last time NHLers compete at an Olympics, Fasel told Canwest News Services that while he understands the league didn't cash in as expected from its participation in the Winter Games, the Olympics still provide the NHL with a global audience it isn't finding anywhere else.

"He's wrong," Fasel told Canwest on Tuesday. "He's completely wrong. If you want to bring hockey to new people and new sponsors, you have to use the huge stage of the Winter Olympics. For Torino, we had 14 billion TV viewers. When I see the numbers the NHL reaches on TV, you cannot compare.
"It's a great opportunity for the NHL brand. When David Stern decided to bring the NBA to Barcelona [for the 1992 Games] it was huge. Gary was thinking he can do the same thing and he had six, maybe seven very strong teams and a better tournament. Maybe that's what Gary doesn't like, when it's not North America that's winning it's not his product. But he's wrong. For me, he's wrong."

Fasel is hardly the first person in the hockey world to voice an opinion on NHL Olympic participation that differs from Bettman's.
Washington capitals sniper Alexander Ovechkin has said he'll play in the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia, no matter what.
"It's what I want and what I'm going to do," Ovechkin said recently.
The league's leading goal scorer last year, Ovechkin called for a meeting of NHL players to talk about participating in 2014, and has not backed down on his comments.

Earlier this month Bettman told The Canadian Press it's a different story when the Games aren't in North America, and suggested the Olympics need the NHL more than the NHL needs the Olympics.
"The benefits of going to the Olympics when you're in Salt Lake City or Vancouver, to name two cities, are way different than if you're in Japan, Italy or Russia,'' said Bettman. "I'm not sure that type of exposure warrants or overcomes the difficulties."
But Fasel, who told Canwest the IIHF earns about the same amount of money from the Olympic hockey tournament with our without NHL participation, says the federation is doing its best to promote the sport outside of North America.

"The European market is very important for the NHL," Fasel said. "They have the best European players, but if we want to bring the kids to the sport and develop them, we have to use this European market.
"We're losing players everywhere in the world. We have to bring the young boys and girls to hockey. How can we make the best promotion for the game? It has to be the Olympics.
"We can do something together, for sure. We have to work together with the NHL. But they have to respect us as a partner. The way they're handling us now, taking all the players away, it almost killed the system."

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/hockey/news/newsid=17377.html?cid=rsstsn

Bettman should have been fired years ago.

Ottawa owner's trivial pursuit of Heatley’s $4 million bonus (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Ottawa-owner-s-trivial-pursuit-of-Heatley-rsquo-?urn=nhl,199914)

News is just trickling out now that Ottawa Senators (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/ott/) owner Eugene Melnyk filed a grievance with the NHL against former Senator Dany Heatley (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/2415/)(notes) (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/2415/news), seeking to reclaim the $4 million signing bonus Heatley snagged (http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/hockey/ottawa-senators/Senators+file+grievance+against+Heatley/2176884/story.html) after refusing a trade (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Dany-Heatley-speaks-about-bruised-ego-denial-of?urn=nhl,184431) to the Edmonton Oilers (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/edm/) over the summer.

Bruce Garrioch broke the story in the Ottawa Sun (http://www.lfpress.com/sports/hockey/2009/11/03/11613381-sun.html), indicating that Melnyk filed the papers during the summer and that the long-shot tactic could simply be a way to aggravate Heatley after the San Jose Sharks (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/san/) winger handcuffed Ottawa in the offseason with his trade demand.
From the Sun:

Sources say Melnyk contends in the paperwork filed at the NHL's New York headquarters, that Heatley's camp -- including agents J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine -- gave the Senators permission to speak with the Oilers and the two-time, 50-goal scorer should have accepted the deal to Edmonton.
It's believed Melnyk not only claims the decision by Heatley to kill the deal cost him $4 million, it also hurt the club's ability to sell season tickets because of the uncertainty in the Senators camp.
More analysis from The 6th Sens. (http://the6thsens.com/2009-articles/november/melnyk-files-grievance-against-heatley.html)
Now, there's obviously some validity to the latter claim ... which is quickly undermined by the fact that the Senators gave Heatley a no-movement clause that put the puck in his end of the rink if he demanded a trade. The entire grievance, in fact, is centered around the contractual conditions the Senators gave Heatley upon his signing an extension: A $4 million bonus on July 1, 2009, and the no-movement clause.
It doesn't matter if Barry and McAlpine gave the Senators permission to speak to the Oilers or the Orlando Rollergators; Ottawa gave Heatley the right to exercise a veto and gave him a bonus to collect as long as he was a Senator -- both of which he did. In fact, the bonus the Senators promised him actually harmed their ability to trade him (http://www.faceoff.com/story.html?id=97b2249e-f42a-47d3-9497-214ec5fa2031).
In the battle of dumb versus selfish, the winner is selfish.
Barring any bombshells lingering off the record, this would appear to be a slam-dunk case for NHLPA lawyers. Provided, of course, that Chelios doesn't scare them all away. (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2009/11/03/sp-chelios-review.html?ref=rss)
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Ottawa-owner-s-trivial-pursuit-of-Heatley-rsquo-;_ylt=At04oqI0Xl03Je7RfTO_4m4JfwM6?urn=nhl,199914

Finally, some good news. Hope Heatley is forced to give back the 4 million he conveniently took from his former club when he bailed on them.

"NHL plans on making soft cap shoulder pads mandatory next season. I'll have more on the NHL on TSN after the 1st in the Chi-Cgy game."

I like. If you KO someone with a clean hit, fair enough. But using equipment with the hardness of steel todo it ain't cool. Though now I think my shoulder pads will now be NHL illegal. : /

Neal also got 2 games for this woozy doozy.

Speaking of the Cal-Chi game, did you see Hjalmarsson's hit on Bourque? Ouch.

Stay classy, Anaheim!

Wow. Glad to see Americans being a little more passionate about hockey than Canadians :)

Lotta moves lately Vinny.

I might have to reconsider a few things...

Pod, give me marleau and boyle, I'll give you semin, cammallari and gonchar. Good deal? It will complete your backstrom ovie and semin line.

Dirty knee to knee hit on Nik Kronwall by Georges Laraque.

Kronwall's out at least 2-3 weeks. The Wings are getting decimated by injuries.

Franzen
Filppula
Williams
Lilja
Kronwall

Not looking good :(

This NHL season is ridiculous. The local broadcasters mentioned that almost 20% of the league is or has been injured. It's not even December.

Agreed. Penguins are also losing a lot of their main defensemen.

In this one specific case, it seems to be karmic justice. Kronwall is a dirty headhunter (much like Ulf, Marchment, etc. years ago)

I like Big George, but on that one shift he got 6 minutes of penalties and cost the Habs 2 goals while he was in the box. 2 for the knee, 4 for a high stick (I think was the breakdown). Dumbest hockey shift in a long time that I can remember.

OMG... that mythical thing called "a trade" has occured. Benoit Pouliot for Latrendress.

The NHL has become intensely boring trade wise with the salary cap situation, mega contracts, and clubs handing out NTC like candy.

I don't like Bettman, okay I despise him, but how are a lack of trades his fault? Isn't it the GMs who fought for a cap and then started handing out stupid contracts? Plus the whole economy that will drive the cap down.

I disagree. Most of his hits, are legal. That hit on Havlat last year, in which he was given a game misconduct sticks out. The guy lands legal hits, and everyone wants to cry foul. I'd be the first one to criticize him for a dirty, head hunting play.

Lupul, Carter, etc. Kronwall has a history of going for other players' heads and jumping while doing so.

Dirty player. He deserved to be injured.

He needs to expand in Canada
Screw the coyotes
Screw Carolina
Screw every team with 5000 attendance

Bull****.

The NHL would be alot more exciting and special.
Merchandise and Season tickets alone will pay for the dang teams

lol one more thing to add..Teams in Europe would be better before teams in the South

and now that's a plane ride!
But with multiple teams over there and 2 or 3 games back to back like baseball would be fantastic.

His feet leaving the ice after the hit isn't illegal, which is what he does.

To say he deserves to be injured is pretty low.
