Delta Force Gets a Name Change

Oct 12 2010, 11:00 AM ET Comment (http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/10/delta-force-gets-a-name-change/64310/#disqus_thread)
You know them as the "Delta Force," the elite team of military commandos who bust in places, kill the bad guys, and do the nation's necessary dirty work. More accurately, they've been busting their **** as lawnmowers against Al Qaeda and Iranian proxies for nine years on relentless three-month rotations.

If you want to impress your military friends, dropping a "CAG" here and there wasn't a bad way to go.

So apparently DevGru is no more either.

And we all know the bewildering number of codenames the ISA has gone through: Gray Fox, Yellow Fruit, Grantor Shadow, Centra Spike, Torn Victor, Cemetery Wind...I believe it changes every six months.

What I find funny is that the unit is listed in the Ft. Bragg/XVIII Airborn Corps phone book. I wonder who came up with that idea.

Lamest. SF name. Ever

That doesn't sound like bearded badasses riding motorcycles directly into caves and blowing shyte up in the name of democracy, that sounds like a PC term for Fobbits.

well, for popular culture, they are still Delta theres too much money to be made from upstart airsofters to change it now.

Oh and DevGroup?, clearly they now call themselves BDPD-SEALS ;p

Thinking about it now, if it is SFOD-Delta, what were the first 3 letters? SFOD-Alpha,Bravo, and Charlie?

Sources say the new name is:

The Artists Formerly Known As CAG. They have created a logo that you use instead of those words before, but don't worry, fonts with the logo embedded are easily downloadable in their website.

Well, the only reason that SEAL Team Six even became "DEVGRU" in the first place, was all due to politics.

I say they completely throw everyone off and go with a name no one would want to claim:

Field

Group

F.A.G.

And sub units would be:

Field
Activities
Group
Global
Operations
Teams

F.A.G.GO.T.s

Complete with shoulder tabs

Another storied unit, the Navy's SEAL Team Six, has also had its cover name changed. No longer is it called the "Naval Special Warfare Development Group," or DevGru.

But a senior defense official asked that its new cover name not be made public because there is currently no open source reference to the designation.

So ummm... How are they called now?
