Did you notice Lt-Gen. Gotz F.E. Gliemeroth's nasty scar? I would venture to guess that it is on of those old-school European Fraternity Style Fencing/Sabre Dueling Scars like Otto Scorzeny had. Can anyone corroberate that? Maybe he cut himself shaving instead.....?

Well I think he was in a "Burschenschaft" . Thats a kind of students' association with some wierd Traditions. For example hitting each other with big big Sabre in the Face. So many old Polititians, Businessmen and etc. have such nasty Scars.

NATO takes over security force in Kabul
Last Updated Mon, 11 Aug 2003 10:03:57

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - NATO took over command of the international security force in Afghanistan Monday, the first time the 54-year-old alliance has operated outside Europe.

The peacekeeping force will remain under a UN mandate and will still be called the International Security Assistance Force ( ISAF).

About 1,800 Canadians will be part of the force, which will be made up of 5,600 soldiers from some 30 countries.

The ISAF was created in December 2001 to bolster security in Afghanistan's capital city, Kabul, after the U.S. toppled the Taliban government there.

Canadian Maj.-Gen. Andrew Leslie will be second-in-command of the ISAF, under NATO Lt.-Gen. Gotz Gliemeroth from Germany.

Gliemeroth accepted a green flag from the outgoing commander of the ISAF, German Lt.-Gen. Norbert can Heyst, in a ceremony held Monday in a high school auditorium to mark the handover.

NATO is taking command of the force in part to end the process of selecting a new country to take over the ISAF every six months.

A NATO spokesman said its command of the force will give the ISAF more continuity. Most of the force's commanders, after learning the details of how to command a security force in Kabul, have left after six months.

Thanks, Rantanplan. I had a hunch. "Burschenschaft" would mean 'JoungMensAssociation', that's why I mentioned Fraternity. I had no idea it was so prevalent. Getting whacked in the face by a saber doesn't sound too fun. Prussian Generals didn't have them. 'Must be a 'southern' thing?

By the way, your avtar is just cRaZy!

If he realy was in a Burschenschaft, I don't know. This was pure speculation.

I don't know much about the Burschenschaften, because they are not very popular in modern Germany. But i know that Burschenschaft Members fought during the napoleonic wars for independence and an united Germany (you maybe know the Lütow Freicorp). In 1848 they initialized the first german Revolution and build up the first united demacratic german state. Well, they tried it. ;)

For Me, they are a very mysterious Band.

P.S. thank you
