These things we do that others may live applies perfectly to PJ and other SAR/CSAR units, but I don't see how it applies to military in general. The first purpose of an army is to kill and destroy in support of national policies. I think the infantry (unofficial?) motto would apply better: Locate, close in, destroy

I think the Brits are very good at the motto game. Who dares wins (you know which Regiment) and Not by strength, by guile (SBS) conjure up very well the special operations ethos.

My personal favorite is USASOC motto: Sine Pari (which roughly translates into )Without equal)

Well, I think "that others may live" could apply to the rest of the military, since we protect our nations people so that they might sleep well and safely.

As for a motto, I'm kind of partial to "Festina Lente", which means: Hasten Slowly. I'm attached to this one for personal reasons.

I understood what you meant, I wasn't thinking about the motivations of soldiers, merely about the job itself. For all the greatness of the sacrifice made by servicemen and women throughout history, we shouldn't lose sight of the nature of war, otherwise, as Robert E. Lee put it, "we might grow too fond of it", and that nature is a destructive one.

Your motivations, mine and that of man down the line may vary wildly, but the means to achieve it are common:fight and destroy. That's where I think PJs and other SAR units differ: their primary, direct purpose is to save lives, not abstract lives back at home, but fellow men whose lives are at threat on the battlefield. Killing enemy soldiers is one of the means they might use to achieve this goal, but unlike the infantrymen, it is not their primary purpose. That's all I meant.

I don't question the motivations of individuals, they all have a different one to serve. But let's keep in mind that it is by implementing the notion of killing (ie the spirit of the bayonet) in basic training that the US armed forces boosted the proportion of men who actually fired their weapon in combat from 20% during WW2 to up to 90% in Vietnam.

One more: Allons! or "Let's go!" ,
motto of the 11th ACR "Blackhorse Cav"

Semper Fidelis . . . Always Faithful - USMC.

It's interesting to me that so many of these mottos are in Latin.

I like the Air Force Intelligence Agency's motto:
"Lux ex Tenebris - Light from Darkness"

Any soldier's doctrine:
"Adapt and Overcome"

US Army Special Forces:
"De Oppresso Liber - To free the Oppressed"

Coroner service:
"When your day ends, ours begins"

USAF F-117 pilot's saying:
"To those who hide at night: Beware of those in the shadows"

Classic counter-terrorist doctrine:
"Chaos and Control"
"Fast is slow, slow is quick."
"Front site focus, trigger squeeze, discipline and control"
"I am an operator. And I am an operator all day, every day, day in, day out. When I go home at night and take this Eagle off, I am still an operator. And I will continue to operate until I can do it no more."

"In combat, no matter what form, there is no hope, and there is no luck. There is only instinct and perfection. And in the shadow of perfection, is death."

FBI Hostage Rescue Team motto:
"Servare Vitas - To save lives"

My personal motto:
"Today is just another cold day in Hell..."

Not really a motto, but I missed the quote thread:
"In God we trust; everyone else, keep your hands wear I can see them."

Royal has this as his signature but I thought this was a good place to put it for those who hadn't seen it.

I think the quote "Luck loves the fearless" would be a good one to use but I'm not sure if any military actually uses it.

Royal's sig is and always has been Per mare, Per terram (by sea, by land). I think Martin had the Iron Duke's eve of Waterloo quote.

The following words are not from a motto, or a mantra, but it speaks volumes about what it means to be a soldier:

"When you go home, tell them of us, and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today."

They are carved on the walls of the Commonwealth Cemetery in my country. 4,458 men are buried there. On the walls of a memorial inside, you will find an additional 24,000 names on the wall, men who are missing or who have no known graves.

The best quote i can think of is Nemo me impune lacessit this is the motto of the The Black Watch these guys are hard. The motto translates into to "Nobody provokes me without getting hurt". The black watch is one of the most distinguished regiments in the British army with a long and proud history. There battle honours include Waterloo, the somme, Dunkirk,El Alamein.

The regimental hero is Piper McIntyre of the 5th battalion . Aged 19, Mc Intyre piped his comrades into battle at El Alamein during WW 2. Wounded three times he kept playing until he died.
