ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Wild tigers could become extinct in 12 years if countries where they still roam fail to take quick action to protect their habitats and step up the fight against poaching, global wildlife experts told a "tiger summit" Sunday.

The World Wildlife Fund and other experts say only about 3,200 tigers remain in the wild, a dramatic plunge from an estimated 100,000 a century ago. James Leape, director general of the World Wildlife Fund, told the meeting in St. Petersburg that if the proper protective measures aren't taken, tigers may disappear by 2022, the next Chinese calendar year of the tiger.

Their habitat is being destroyed by forest cutting and construction, and they are a valuable trophy for poachers who want their skins and body parts prized in Chinese traditional medicine.

The summit approved a wide-ranging program with the goal of doubling the world's tiger population in the wild by 2022 backed by governments of the 13 countries that still have tiger populations: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and Russia.

Got to educate the Chinese first.

If they can be forced to change their behaviour, tiger potions will cease to exist and the need to poach them will stop over night. However, getting the Chinese to stop is not going to be an easy task...

Tigers are absolutely beautiful and majestic animals. Too bad these godless Commies can't be stopped and will extinct them. I just hope some eggheads will collect enough DNA samples to clone Tigers or increase their population with artificial insemination before it's too late.

We have only ONE Tiger here in Israel, roaming the Negev with a tracking device, IIRC they wanted (?) to release a female Tiger there so they'll breed.

These assholes in China are no better than the savages in Africa who believe that having *** with a virgin will cure AIDS. Sad.

I hope that the reintroduction programs work out.

Well, it's the tigers in the wild that are on the verge of being extinct, Tigers as a species are not, there are more tigers in zoo's and in private hands then there are in the wild...by far.

Sad none the less, majestic animals indeed, visited the tiger santctuary in Thailand a month ago and that was awesome, however i pussied out meeting the adult tigers, damn, they are huge, so I went to play with the slightly smaller ones instead.

Only if they take what's left of them and relocate them to a continent much more accustomed to civility (Aka Europe...and sometimes North America).

Nah, (central) Europe sucks. In Germany they shot a brown bear a few years ago, just because he walked around in Bavaria. I can hardly imagine the hysteria if some Tigers would be relocated to Europe. The results would look like Cloverfield and Godzilla p-)

Did you just compare Germany to Asia?

Who? Me? Lol, hell no.

I just replied to the suggestion to relocate Tigers to Europe. Since most Germans start to wet their pants when a spider starts to "charge" them, they would die of panic attacks if they have to face actual dangerous animals ;)

Now you're comparing the actions of Germans acting in self defense to Asians killing in bulk for profit.

The dissapearance of an apex predator is going to have severe consequences for the local ecosystems. Extinction wouldn't only affect tigers.

Vietnam's Planned Sale of Tiger Paste Protested

Officials in Vietnam's northern Thanh Hoa province agreed last month to organize a public auction of 6 pounds (2.8 kilograms) of tiger paste seized from traffickers. An auction date has not been set.

Vietnam bans the hunting or trade of wild animals and their products, but the Ministry of Agriculture has issued a directive allowing its use in making medicines. In Vietnam, tiger bones are used to make expensive traditional medicines purported to cure many illnesses.

Two pounds (1 kilogram) of tiger paste could be sold for $10,000 on the black market.

Got to educate the Chinese first.

Only if you figure out how to patent making a tiger and have them reverse engineer it. Then the market will be flooded and everyone will be able to pick one up at Walmart for $20.

Yeah.... Makes sense, NOT. IF the use of the end product or refined resources is legal, demand will stay up.

VIETNAM,FVCK YEAH!

A couple of years ago a tiger managed to escape from a circus in Warsaw. A veterinatian was called in to hit it with a tranquillizer dart; when the animal attacked the vet, police shot him instead of the tiger.
So yeah, Poland might be a good place for Tigers, but not for their caretakers.
