They are getting quite ingenious with IED's. When I was there recently we were waiting at a checkpoint, waiting to get processed thru and this iraqi boy of about 13 comes walking past. Now for those of you who dont know the americans have a series of white lines at the checkpoints that you dont proceed past until you have been identified and so on. So on walks this iraqi boy straight past the white lines and into the kill zone anyway to cut along story short they took the iraqi boy down without firing a shot and found that he had been strapped with a suicide vest. It turned out that the boy was retarded and could barely understand arabic let alone english and that is way he didnt stop. Apparently the insurgent/militia abducted him from his home strapped the vest onto him and sent him on his way. Just goes to show the lengths these people go to.
RIP to all serviemen and woman who have given there lives

Really sadly message .
REGIMENTAL PRAYER
Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.
We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.
Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.
Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.
Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.
Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!
Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.
Amen.

That story is nearly identical to the one that happened in Israel just recently. May be that's where they got the idea. May be they are the same people.

Been uploading a series I took in the aftermath of a CWIED attack on Route 6 south of An Nasirija. They're in my album.
Fortunatly no one was killed (although there were 2 wounded, 1 seriously). AFAIK both were CasEvaced to the UK.
Interestingly the BOE recomended improvements to ECBA either in the form of a redesign or add on neck protection (the Minimi gunner took sharpnel through the throat - his helmet saved him).

I was thinking the same...
It's been announced the soldier was from the First Batallion, The Black Watch though he's not yet been named.

Private Lee O'Callaghan
It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence has to confirm that Private Lee Martin O'Callaghan was killed during an attack by insurgents in Basrah on 9 August 2004. He was aged 20, and came from London. Unmarried, he was serving with the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment based at Tidworth.
Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Maer, the Commanding Officer of 1PWRR, said:
"Pte Lee O'Callaghan joined my Battalion in December 2003, and was quickly assimilated into the regimental family. He was highly regarded and known as a hard working, diligent member of the team who could be trusted to finish any task with characteristic good humour. He was an avid football fan and keen supporter of Millwall. As a midfielder player himself he took every opportunity he could to play football, bringing his love for the game from Tidworth to Iraq.
"Lee came from Bermondsey, London. He joined the army for the excitement and challenge it offered, he excelled in the training and preparations for Iraq and looked forward to deploying on operations and to do the job for which he had trained. Pte O'Callaghan showed the highest standards of professionalism and courage, in a highly volatile situation.
"The loss of Pte O'Callaghan is deeply felt by all those in the Battalion, but especially so by his friends in B Company. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and loved ones from all those in his Army family."
