BAGHDAD, IRAQ: US soldiers block traffic on the 17th of July Bridge in Baghdad 15 August 2004 as clashes between insurgents and US and Iraqi forces broke out near Haifa street, a bastion of suppoeters of ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, as the Iraqi national conference opened just a few kilometers away. Over 1,000 delegates are taking part in the conference at the so-called Green Zone as a curfew from 0800 AM to 0400 PM was imposed on the area for the duration of the meeting. The conference will first hold working sessions to discuss the transition process, human rights, reconstruction and the issue of justice for those who suffered under Saddam's former dictatorship. On the last day, delegates will select 81 members of a national council to advise the interim government as it paves the way for national elections in January 2005. A Dutch military policeman was shot dead and five other Dutch military personnel were seriously wounded during a firefight in Iraq, the Defense Ministry said Sunday. The incident occurred Saturday in the southern al-Muthana province, where some 1,350 Dutch troops are located, apparently when a Dutch patrol was attacked by unknown assailants, the ministry said in a statement.

BAGHDAD, IRAQ: US soldiers block traffic on the 17th of July Bridge in Baghdad 15 August 2004 as clashes between insurgents and US and Iraqi forces broke out near Haifa street, a bastion of suppoeters of ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, as the Iraqi national conference opened just a few kilometers away. Over 1,000 delegates are taking part in the conference at the so-called Green Zone as a curfew from 0800 AM to 0400 PM was imposed on the area for the duration of the meeting. The conference will first hold working sessions to discuss the transition process, human rights, reconstruction and the issue of justice for those who suffered under Saddam's former dictatorship. On the last day, delegates will select 81 members of a national council to advise the interim government as it paves the way for national elections in January 2005. A large group of people walked out of a national conference, billed as an experiment in Iraqi democracy, shortly after it opened, as fighting resumed in the holy city of Najaf.
