This AUC fighter is the explosives expert for his squad. He is holding a homemade Claymore anti-personnel mine.
The cast metal case contains high explosives surrounded by metal fragments. The mine is spiked into the ground and detonation wires attached. The operator can then activate the device remotely, destroying everything within range.

AUC did fight FARC this is why they were created.But they are just as similar as FARC.Accept that they are right wing.They use the drug trade to finance there campaign against FARC.They execute civilians who think are supporters or members of FARC units.

FARC is definately weaker.Most of this footage is in the late 90's.They operate close to the Venezuelen border and have camps inside Venezuelen territory.They will make incursions into Colombian Police hamlets every know and again or set up a ambush.They still have Fronts of hundred or so men operating in Colombia.

While searching a disabled bus for ****y traps, Government soldiers accidentally trigger an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted by FARC rebels. The explosion killed two soldiers instantly and wounded a third.

Unable to leave the fortress like station except on patrol, the policemen have a makeshift gym in which to blow off steam and keep fit.

The centre of this town was blasted with rockets, mortars or bombs on 85 different occasions in 2002 making it the most attacked town in Colombia, earning it the nickname ‘Little Sarajevo’.
Apart from the Police station virtually all buildings around the central plaza have been destroyed.

The police station resembles a fortified bunker. It is surrounded with sandbags and sentry posts from which guards constantly watch the streets.

The policemen cover each other as they move forward through rebel-infested barrios. Each patrol consists of 25 men. This number allows them to dominate a large area making ambushes less likely.

The policemen move fast and well spaced out as a precaution against snipers or anti-personnel mines. Whenever the group pauses they take up defensive positions near whatever cover is available.

As darkness falls the tension rises, as does the chance of attack. Guns are pointed into every shadow and anyone unwise enough to be on the streets is treated with suspicion.

Within a few streets it is possible to pass graffiti proclaiming that both local militia from the FARC and ELN are present.

Corruption plagues every country in the world.I do not think it is only done in Colombia.But we are showing good improvement and FARC is more of a narco cartel then a actual threat to any one.Like the ETA in Spain and the Russians in the Chechen war.It is only in certain areas that there will be fighting.It is not all over the country which is some thing people make the mistake of thinking.

Ghelp, excellent compilation here. When I was still working in Colombia, I had the priviledge of getting to view captured FARC videos. They were self-made videos of them preparing and executing attacks on various outposts. It was truly disturbing.

Colombia is a very diverse country twice the size of France.We have every thing from snow capped mountains to areas you would confuse for Europe.In this case Ireland.Most people make the mistake of believing that Colombia is all jungle which just isn't true.We even have a desert the size of Switzerland.

Thanks Snakebiteleader.I hope this helps.You can be conscripted for a 24 month period.But it is mostly all volunteer force.It depends on each municipality.Threat of guerilla activity and what not.In case of all out war every able bodied man would be conscripted into service and armed by National Police Forces or from Military stocks.Numbers can swell to 10 million able bodied men if Colombia is threatened by a external threat.

Hmm sounds better then i thinked about it, are the narco - Terrorists able to compene this repercussions with backup from the cartels(s) ?

IEDs are pretty nasty, but if they also plant IEDs / mines in citys wouldnt the people stopping to help the terrorists in any way and maybe more to support the goverment?

SOGAMOSO, Colombia - Colombian and OAS officials on Friday supervised the destruction of thousands of weapons — everything from handguns to heavy machine guns and grenade launchers — surrendered by demobilized right-wing paramilitary fighters.
The mountain of 18,000 weapons were melted at a foundry in this town in the central province of Boyaca, and will be turned into plaques honouring the 9,000 civilian victims of fighters formerly with the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC).
Between 2003 and 2006 the group’s 32,000 fighters demobilized, surrendering most of their weapons.
Relatives of AUC victims at the event “have expressed their profound desire for reconciliation between Colombians,” said Eduardo Pizarro, who heads the government office in charge of reparations for paramilitary abuses.
However reconciliation “should not be an excuse” for either failing to prosecute the guilty or forgetting their crimes, Pizarro said.
The job is not entirely over since far right-wing groups are re-arming in different parts of Colombia, Insulza recently told reporters.
“There are some groups that continue, that are armed, we all know it, but comparatively it is a much smaller number,” Insulza said.
The top AUC leaders who surrendered are currently in prison under a controversial law that allows them to spend a maximum of eight years in prison for crimes they committed, including for crimes against humanity.
The AUC, an umbrella group uniting several right-wing paramilitary groups, was formed in the 1980s to counter leftist rebel groups. It was active in northern and eastern Colombia for some 20 years.

Colombian forces have killed seven FARC rebels in an attack in the nation's Putumayo region and confiscated large amounts of explosives.

The Military forces and the rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, exchanged gunfire near the town of La Hormiga , about 342 miles southwest of Bogota.

Soldiers fired machine guns from helicopters trying to take control of the rebel groups in the area.

After the fighting the armed forces found seven bodies and put them on board.

"Troops from the 27th brigade have delivered a hard hit to the organized and armed structures of the 32nd front of the FARC in the lower Putumayo. We found three camps and destroyed more than 1.5 tons of explosives," said General Javier Fernandez, commander of the 27th Brigade that led the attack.

Colombia's president Alvaro Uribe, a US ally, is known for his hardline stance against the FARC, who have gone back to the jungles as the troops reclaimed towns once under their control.

Uribe has refused the rebel demands to retreat the troops to facilitate talks.

Cheers.FARC is pretty damn awful. Right wing paramilitaries are almost as bad. A state must have a monopoly on force or everything goes to hell. Colombia is in a bad place, and the war on drugs is fueling it all. Cokeheads around the world are willing to pay ridiculous sums of money for their fix, so no matter how much product you stop at the border the bastards growing the stuff still make massive profit.

Colombian rebel leader killed by Army operation


BOGOTA (AFP) — The Colombian military killed the number two leader of the Marxist FARC rebels, Raul Reyes, in an air strike Saturday in neighboring Ecuador, dealing a major blow to the guerrillas, officials said.
Reyes was in a rebel camp located 1.8 kilometers (a mile) from the Ecuadoran-Colombian border when the air force began bombing shortly after midnight, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos told a news conference.

Colombian ground troops were then deployed into the guerrilla hideout to secure the area, Santos said. A total of 17 guerrillas and one soldier were killed in the operation.

Reyes, 59, whose real name was Luis Edgar Devia, was a union leader working for Swiss food giant Nestle in the southern department of Caqueta when he joined the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the 1970s.

The grey-bearded, bespectacled rebel, who went on to become the FARC's chief spokesman, donning olive fatigues and carrying a rifle, had been viewed as a possible successor to the group's 77-year-old boss, Manuel Marulanda.

His killing was a major coup for conservative President Alvaro Uribe, who has taken a hard stance against the 17,000-strong FARC, South America's biggest insurgency which has bedeviled successive governments since the 1960s.

The government calls the rebels "narco-terrorists" who fund their insurgency through cocaine trafficking and hold an estimated 750 people hostage. The FARC are on the terrorist group lists of the European Union and United States.

"Raul Reyes, member of the FARC secretariat, has been killed in a joint military and national police operation, and it is the heaviest blow ever dealt against this terrorist group," Santos said.
The defense chief said the Colombian Air Force never violated Ecuadoran air space during the operation.

"Once the camp was bombarded, Colombian forces were ordered in to secure the area and neutralize the enemy. The police was also asked to keep it secure until Ecuadoran authorities arrived," he said.
Reyes's body was taken to the Colombian side to prevent FARC from claiming the remains, he said.

Radio Caracol reported that the raid was launched after security agencies intercepted a satellite communication.

Uribe telephoned Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa to talk to him about the operation, but it was unclear if they spoke before or after the raid. Correa said he had deployed troops to the area to "verify" what had taken place.

Reyes was one of the seven members of FARC's secretariat, which is headed by by Marulanda, the group's founder, whose nom de guerre is "Sure Shot."

After the death of FARC's ideological leader Jacobo Arenas in 1992, Reyes became the group's international face, taking the group's message abroad. In this capacity, he met with US government representatives in Costa Rica in 1997.

"It is the hardest, strongest blow, which is likely to destabilize the entire FARC because it is the first time that the government succeeds in striking the leadership of the rebel movement," said Leon Valencia, a former guerrilla-fighter-turned-analyst.

Reyes's death came three days after the FARC unilaterally released four former lawmakers who had been held hostage for years, handing them to the Venezuelan government and the Red Cross in a snub to Uribe.
They were among a group of 43 high-profile hostages, including three Americans and French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, whom the FARC want to swap for 500 rebels held in prison.

But the two sides have failed to agree on conditions to negotiate the swap, with the government rejecting FARC's demand that it create a demilitarized zone to host the talks.

Reacting to the raid, French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged all sides to take into account "humanitarian considerations" and maintain the "positive dynamic" that had been created by the recent hostage release.
He also renewed his call for the FARC to release Betancourt, 46, who is gravely ill.

Nimrod is an anti-tank and anti-personnel laser homing missile of 26 km range and pinpoint accuracy. It is easily installed on a variety of ground platforms and helicopters.

On land, it provides standoff strike capability against ground point targets such as tanks, APCs, bunkers, personnel concentrations and guerrillas. A forward scouting team uses a laser designator to direct missiles that are fired from a base up to 26 km behind.
