Making my city proud.

I figured maybe they would have liked that statue of George. The bottom part of his cane was broken/shot off by Sherman's troops in during the Civil War and is still broken to this day.

Meanwhile, they are crowded around the Confederate Memorial you see in the background.

The same people that owned slaves then are the same people today who have maids, butlers, chauffers, gardners, nannies, etc. It was just a different time.

Did slaves have the right to quit? be educated? or allowed to keep families together?

Did they wrap the box around Washington's statue Ordie?...If not then it doesn't matter who's site it is, if the photo is legitimate.

1. I'm reasonably certain the people that owned slaves aren't alive today and hiring butlers, et al.

2. Freedom of employment is probably rather relevant here.

Slavery had already been around a long time before the United States ever became a country, so it was nothing new at the time. Unfortunately, they did not have the fore-sight to abolish slavery at the beginning (in 1776), probably because so many of the rich (ie., polititions and political backers) had slaves.

You're comparing now with then. Times and circumstances are completely different. That's why we right our wrongs. Move on already.

Dude,
It's a comparison. The people today who hire people to do they're house duties/chores are the same type of people who had slaves in early America (ie, the wealthy). Middle and low wage earners did not have slaves. Slaves were an expensive luxury and only a very small fraction of citizens actually had slaves.

All I said is that was the mindset of the times back then. Yes, slavery is evil. That's why it was abolished in 1865 in the US. It should have been abolished in 1776. Serfdom, indentured servents, etc., in Europe was barely a step above slavery. Not to mention, didn't Europeans introduce slavery to America?

Yes Slavery was introduced to America by the Europeans. If you look at the history of it though Europeans didn't capture the most slaves, it was other tribes that brought them tot he Europeans for pay. people can try and blame whoever but a lot of people were at fault.
This is what is the official history that is taught in Ghana and Benin at the Slave sites.

Golly Ordie, I don't know. How about this, Let's ask the child slaves of Haiti (http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8390000/8390444.stm), or perhaps the child soldiers (another form of slavery) of the world *note* more than half originate out of Africa *note* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_use_of_children )

Quit harping on an age that you never lived in, nor had to live life under a way people lived back then. If you want to make a difference then focus on the here and now and do some thing to end these terrible inhuman crimes against innocent children who have even less power to defend themselves. Is it basic economics that are the cause of the slavery (adult too by the way) in Haiti, or is it just cruel human nature?

*I do want to add Ordie, that though we are miles apart on this subject, I do appreciate some of your efforts in trying to bring attention to other major social political injustices taking place in our world today...*

They amalgamated his birthday into President's Day in February. As time goes on...less and less people seem to care anymore really.

IMOI think Lyndon Johnson made a bigger contribution to civil rights than MLK.

I would hope that a President of the USA is able to accomplish more legislative change within his country than a disenfranchised member of a minority group railing from a soap box.
