I was just wondering... are there any Russians in here? I keep on seeing comments from supposedly Russian guys on the picture part of the site, but I dont see any Red activity in here....

I had some questions. I am sorta a big Russian fan. I like various things they do and make etc. Don't we all?

Hooah! p-)

I'm a student of Russian, admittedly not a great one. As for red activity, I'm pretty sure the old Soviet Union is dead.

I'm ethnically Russian, but my family's been in the USA since 1892. I like lots of Russian stuff, especially in the arts--Stanislavsky method of acting, Bolshoi Ballet, the film director Eisenstein, the writers Tolstoy, Dosdoyevsky, and Solshenitzn (sp?)...

But I don't think that the Russian military is particularly impressive. Their equipment is reliable, and they've got LOTS of it ;) but they cut a lot of corners, they've got dramatically inferior electronics, inferior training, and historically they've done a poor job at distinguishing combatants from non-combatants. From what I've seen, they seem to prefer massive bombardment (mortar, artillery, and rockets) to scalpel-like precision.

Here's a great site for photos of the Russian military in Chechnya:

i read an article on themoscowtimes.com about how the russian military has been using "death squads" in chechnya, killing large groups of people and then burying them in large heaps. yeah...russia is great...maybe you could start a russian skull collection.

One might hazard a guess that this is a result of them beating their recruits 3/4 to death "to make them tougher," and the resulting psychological damage. Maybe they should spend extra time at the rifle range instead of recouping from these wounds and inflicting them on lower-ranking soldiers. Might help the army's abysmal human rights record as well as their high casualty rate in combat.

Like I said before, I've got nothing against Russia as a whole, but their military needs serious reforms.

I don't think that this would be such a good idea...

I think I saw a little of their "PT" in progress in a video once... is it a little rough? :bash:

Well, I guess they think that... "What does'nt kill you, makes you strogner"

But what if it DOES kill you?

From the BBC: "More Russian recruits die in peacetime within their units than are killed on active service in Chechnya."

Either way, I would not want to be a Russian Army conscript!

Hooah! Sukinsyna! :bash: :bash: p-)

Yeah, and they aren't even that effective anymore. I mean look how they've totally blown the operation in Chechnya. Although they are a numerically superior force and some might argue a technologically superior force, they've gotten their ass handed to them time and time again.

Hmm, new recruits getting beaten up is the basis for the general consus that the Russian army is incompetant.

So how does footage of US personel in some units beating up new members in hazing rituals, or Canadian troops beating new recruits on the bare buttocks in hazing rituals reflect on their respective armed forces.

Chechnia has been mentioned a few times to.

How many cities in North Vietnam did US forces liberate?

What... no enemy held cities?

How about more recently?

They seem to avoid fighting in built up areas.

In Mogadishu they seemed to ahve done well regarding bodycounts against untrained armed civilians.

How well would they have done against fellow US personel?

The Soviets operated something called conscription. This meant that every male over a certain age was taken into the military and trained. Tactics, weapons etc were all taught to every Soviet male.

Urban combat is hard enough, but when your opponent went through the same training you did, and not just grunts, they had many spec ops troops, and quite a few mercenaries as well, from Ukraine, and Georgia, as well as further afield like afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, it starts to get quite competitive. They won the first round in that the Russians as a democracy couldn't just keep taking losses without obvious gains. After being given a level of autonomy the Chechens started attacking its neighbours again. So round two. The Russians did a much better job of round two. They made a lot fewer mistakes, and used some new weapons for the first time.

It certainly isn't over but they are doing a much better job this time than they did last time.
