they are using wz.63 helmets only for jumping, coz kevlar helmets in polish jumping technique are too big...or something like that :roll:

In my personal opinion the name of this brigade (6 Brygada Desantowo-Szturmowa - 6 BDSz) should be translated to English as "the 6th Airborne-Assault Brigade" and not as "air-assault" or "air-mobile", because this unit is not like western air-assault units e.g. 101st Air Assault Div. which have their own helicopters and where all soldiers (as far I know) don't have to be qualified paratroopers.
Polish 6 BDSz don't have helicopters for now and they use helicopters from other units (Army Aviation units or 25th Air Cavalry Brig.). The important thing is that at the first of all, all soldiers from this brigade are paratroopers (and thats why they have always been our elite), so it's like American 82th Airborne Div.

Polish equivalent of real air-assault unit is "the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade" (25 Brygada Kawalerii Powietrznej) (part of it is in Iraq as Multinational Division's air-assault unit) which soldiers (at least most of them) also are qualified paratroopers.

[ In Polish army to be qualified paratrooper of airborne forces you must jump 5 times.]

The word "desant" means "landing troops" (landing from the sky or the sea) and if these troops are landing from the air, than proper word can be "airborne" (which means the same as "air-landing") or "air-assault". "Air-assault" in military means forces which are landing (and assaulting) from the air mostly by helicopters. Everyone knows that paratroops in English are called "airborne" and Polish paratroopers from 6 BDSz has always called themselves "desant", similiary like American paratroopers "airborne". That's why I think English equivalent of Polish word "desant" in paratroops meaning is "airborne".

The 101st converted to an airmobile division in 1968. The term "Airmobile" was later replaced by "Air Assault". It carries the title "Airborne" as a tradition, in the same way the 10th Mountain Division carries the title "Mountain" although it is not a mountain warfare unit.

The "Screaming Eagles" Parachute Demonstration Team and the Long Range Surveillance Detachment of the division's 311th Military Intelligence Battalion are the only 101st units on jump status.
