Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei’s own Red Beret came under royal focus yesterday.

That happened during a special occasion when His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei presented the new unit's beret and insignia to the Special Combat Squadron (SCS) of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF).
The SCS, an elite force, is primarily dedicated to deliver unconventional capabilities to face any unconventional threats.

His Majesty also reviewed the capabilities of the SCS in conducting special operations tactics in sea, air and land which was amply demonstrated by the SCS with live-firing demonstrations throughout.

Upon arrival at the Penanjong Garrison, His Majesty was welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Defence, YAM Pengiran Retired Major General Pengiran Haji Ibnu Ba'asith, the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Pehin Dato Major General Haji Awg Halbi, and the Permanent Secretary of Policy and Administration at the Ministry of Defence, Pehin Dato Awang Haji Mohd Yasmin.

His Majesty's itinerary began with the recitation of the Surah Al Fatihah, led by, Awang Haji Roslan bin Haji Sulaiman. a Senior Religious Officer at the Ministry of Defence.

His Majesty was then given a briefing by the Director of Operations and Planning at the Ministry of Defence. Meanwhile the Officer Commanding of the SCS in his briefing touched on the development and achievement of SCS.

The briefing ended with a question and answer session.
As the Minister of Defence and the Supreme Commander of the RBAF, His Majesty took every possible opportunity to closely inspect the weapons and equipment used by the SCS, as well as mingle and talk freely with this elite force.

The main focus of the visit was the presentation of the new beret and unit insignia for the SCS by His Majesty Sultan of Brunei.

For the unit, this was indeed a special honour and historic moment as this occasion bestowed upon them the special recognition. His Majesty also consented to receive the new unit's insignia which was a souvenir from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
Prior to his departure, His Majesty signed the visit's parchment.

It was followed by a luncheon at the Officers Mess of the Penanjong Garrison. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei

most countries in SEA. We have bilateral defence agreements with the Philippines, Thai, Malay, Brunei, ET, NZ, and a few others. Indonesian Kopassus/SAS/Cdo crosstraining was suspended in 99 and has yet to resume. Nearly all of our Indo/Aus defence ties were severed then and nearly all have yet to be restored though oddly enough reciprocal officer training programs were never severed. Last year I think we had 29 indo officers undertaking courses of various descriptions at our military academies (read that as Duntroon) here while we had around 13 over there doing language training.
