Rome (http://maps.google.com/?q=Rome%2C+Italy&z=4) - A shift of intolerance in Italy toward immigrants and minorities, reflected in politicians’ use of hateful speech, violence against vulnerable groups, and political discourse are leading to increased racism and xenophobic violence, a new report shows.

Italian population is getting old with a birthrate next to zero.
The people the Italians hate today will most likely be the same people who will feed them, change thier bed pans and wheel them around when they get old.

Unless they are able to increase the birthrate, or adopt a more progressive immigration policy they may shrink like Detroit with abandoned rural villages.
Italian cities may end up being tourist backdrops like Venice.

“ I don’t want to punish anybody, but there are an extraordinary number of people who I might want to kill…I think it would be a good thing to make everybody come before a properly appointed board just as he might come before the income tax commissioner and say every 5 years or every 7 years…just put them there and say , ‘Sir or madam will you be kind enough to justify your existence…if you’re not producing as much as you consume or perhaps a little bit more then clearly we cannot use the big organization of our society for the purpose of keeping you alive. Because your life does not benefit us and it can’t be of very much use to yourself.’ George Bernard Shaw

People have been forced out of Venice because of the extremely high real estate and living cost prices, not because there's not enough people to populate the area.

X2 Good for Ordie stating the facts for once. Most European countries are reproducing below the replacement rate for their populations. I disagree that importing uneducated Muslims is the solution, but there needs to be a solution since the Euro-welfare state will not the survive current demographic decline path that Europe is on. Media reporting on immigrants and minorities in Italy is portrayed in a negative light, and the impact of such reporting on the public perception of those communities, including Roma and Sinti, is cause for increased concern among representatives of anti-racist NGOs and media observers.

Yea, the romanian gypsies will take care of the italians when they get old. I'll try to remember that the same goes for us in Norway as well, the next time i'm close to kicking one of those romanian gypsies terrorizing us with their accordians, on every streetcorner in town. And begging everywhere, and stealing everything that isn't bolted down. I should be more positive towards them, since they're gonna 'take care' of me when i get old.

Italians are caught between the traditional mafia and the political mafia. Where is the room for the squandered youth? Where is the Italian Sergey Brin? Italian Steve Jobs? Are they at home with mama or taking risks?
If the Mafia were to legitimize and switch from extortion to venture capital, Italy would be a better place.

Oh good God, why am I agreeing with Ordie? While the racism is not really an issue to me - to me, its more a reaction. The older and the younger people, even if they don't want to say it, they see it - the country they knew is slowly disappearing. I wouldn't call it 'sincere' or 'bigoted' racism - its an expression of frustration imo, so I wouldn't really be too scared of someone trying to jump me, beyond the usual suspects. Of course, this is largely their (Italians) fault, as Ordie pointed out, the TFR is 1.3 - lowest low. Italy is in a death spiral at the moment. Population will be halved by the next generation, and halved again after that.
But I digress - Europeans largely seem to understand this problem, and that they HAVE SOME kind of problem demographically - of course, some call it a minor drop (avg layman). Others (usually politicians) say that one can just import millions of foreigners to do the work Europeans used to do, hoping they just generate money for the natives and that they magically won't bring their religion and culture with them to the shores. Its better than Russia in a way - barely anyone believes there is a problem anymore.

I admire that Italy is not bending over and taking every illegal immigrant that wants in. Why should they have to? They are a soveriegn country. Their citizens seem to overwhelmingly approve. My cousin emailed me a video of a Moroccan illegal getting the piss beat out of him by 4 policemen. No one dissapproved. I'm not saying its a good thing, but I think the Italian people know where they stand on illegals and demand that something be done. Whether they won't have someone to wipe their ass when they get old is their decision.
Is Italy doing anything different then gated communities, exclusive areas or even smaller towns in the US whose police ensure those who belong in the community are there?

We have taken well over 20 thousand at the begining of this year alone and once they are processed they are moved to all parts of Italy and given the chance to live a normal life. They arent treated badly at all... They are given more benefits and help then an italian citizen could get and yet we are still labeled with all this BS by ****s who probably havent even spent 1 month in the country. With our ****ed up economy we still do our part, Just because we havent built a golden palace for the roma and we dont let them get away with breaking rules we are EVIL!

Of course not.
The Italy in thier minds is the Italy of their Grandparents. (Church going, large families, social conservatives, pasta dinners every Sunday afternoon)
Many don't speak Italian today because modern Italian (Florentine) was not spoken by the first immigrants. Plus many acculturated themselves into being Americans, Argentines, or Brazilians during WW2.
Italians look at overseas Italians as peasants stuck in a timewarp.
The irony here is that there's more Italians overseas than in Italy and that number will grow. Italy may need to create more liberal policies in extending citizenship rights and benefits to the overseas Italians to save Italy.
Italy should copy from the Israelis and set up programs to sponsor overseas Italian youth to spend summers and study in Italy. With the hopes they may settle in Italy and start families. These kids may have fresh ideas, energy and may contrubute to the Italian society at large. These kids are not bound by regional identity, they are diverse, and have international connections. It would be stupid for Italy not to invest in a program such as this.
