Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern book series has garnered generations of fans. Now it's about to be translated for the screen by the screenwriter for Watchmen and X2, David Hayter.
According to Deadline (http://www.deadline.com/2011/04/david-hayter-to-adapt-scifi-book-series-dragonriders-of-pern/), producer Steve Hoban has been itching to make a Pern film forever. And now David Hayter has been hired to write the script based on Dragonlight, the first book in McCaffrey's 22-book series.

Just Freaking Awesome!

*edit* about 20 minutes into avatar it dawned on me that the CGI tech had finally arrived that could do Pern's dragons right, and then they had the flying lizards and I just about had a heart attack.

Hah! So they are going to make a movie of the series eh. I remember looking at the art work on the book covers back in the 80's and thinking how weird they looked. Never read any of the books though, never really liked dragons.

Dragonflight, first book. Good place to start. I wanted to imprint. Too old now though. Don't want my Dragon to die in a few years with me. Fire lizard maybe. Something smart.

That Avatar moment hit me that way too.Epiphany.

I just hope that they do the stories justice. I've read them all, and loved every moment of them.

Just introduced the wife to the series over the weekend. She hasn't started to read Dragonflight yet but it is the next book on her stack o stuff to read.

Yup. One always worries about the movie version but, sounds exciting.

Best dragons ever. Some books are fantasy and some are sci-fi. I turned on 4 women to them as well. My sister,a friends' sister, and two female friends. Way back when we also had a "pre-internet" club. Fanzines and filksongs and the women would do fashion layouts and write songs etc.. Also read Darkover and Amber in this group, write amateur fanfiction and dictionaries. "Friends of Darkover."

All long before things like Dragon Con and Cosplay.

She is still around. Don't care for her sons' books as much.

Another cool series is CJ Cherryh's "Riders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finisterre_universe)" books...kinda western/frontier with telepathic wildlife.

You mean, please don't let the CGI dominate as it has in so many recent crap-o-rama films.

I hate CJ Cherryh, maybe it was because I read one of her series about some dude from a desert clan or some such... I think it was the faded sun series. It was one of the most intensely boring books I have read. maybe I just picked a bad book, but damn I won't touch another or hers.

Well you did pick one of her tougher to get into series...I would sugest Downbelow station, or maybe the star viking series...more space opera and less cultural.

Good Luck! I had a hard time getting into that series, as I got swept away by the Dune series about the same time....

Loved Dune...but Herbert's Destination:Void series did a lot more for me (Jesus incident, lazuras effect, ascention factor) to say nothing of the "White Plague".

But Pern is a complete package, but I admit that I stopped reading the books after the harpercraft hall books ended with 'White Dragon"...I wanted an albino dragon very badly after that, I must have made a few charaters named Jaxom for DnD.

yeah.... Your recommendations, Seraosha, sound like a friend's from a while back. I think I will pick up some other Herbert books soon.

I have to admit that i think I only ever finished the first Dragonflight book.

My three year old has no idea what he's in for once he's old enough.

I've gotten all psyched to read these now. The page you posted sounds very Pern/Darkover-like.

I read one or two as a teen, when DAW books was new, but, don't think I "got them." Gonna try Riders. Haven't read a new series in 5 years. Last one was Beggers In Spain.

He'll probably be a lacrosse fanatic and think the ol' man is crazy.p-)
