When the 4th ID iviy division was deployed to iraq they were the only div in iraq with the M1A2 Abrams. Then they were replaced by another division during the rotations.

Recently I have seen in the dayliy posted photos section , pictures of M1A2 abrams in IRAq around najaf . Who else has the M1A2s ?

The US Army is the only Army in that country using the M1A2
The Marines use the M1A1
The only other countires that have the Abrams is Eygpt and the Auzzies p-)

I mean what other division of the US ARMY uses the M1A2 now in IRAq.
The only division that used the M1A2 in OIF were the 4tID IVY. But they are back in the States and I have seen other units of the US ARMY with M1A2s.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia also use the M-1A2. In fact, they got them before we did.

Normally the 1st Cavs use the M1A2. The 4th ID use M1A2SEP.

The SEP is a significant improvement over the M1A2.

In March 2004, the Australian Army announced it would buy 59 M1A1 straight from US Army inventory. Formal agreement was signed in July 2004. M1A1 will be refurbished and updated with an expected delivery in 2007. The $530 million package also includes 7 x M88 Hercules ARV, tank transporters, refuelling vehicles and ammunition.

They did. We were still running around with M-1A1s in Kuwait while the Kuwaitis had shiny new M-1A2s. How do I know? I was there.

But since you've got such a high post count, you OBVIOUSLY know more than I do.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia purchased and fielded 315 M1A2 Abrams tanks in the Royal Saudi Land Forces. The Government of Kuwait purchased and fielded 218 M1A2 Abrams tanks in the Kuwaiti Land Forces. All of these nations are considering additional orders or configuration upgrades.

Why does Kuwait and Saudi need M1A2s? Iraq is no longer a threat.

Yep you are right - however most of the US M1A1s were of the HA/HC variants which are much more heavily armored than the exported M1A1/A2 variants.

Also the US M1A1s come equipped with M829A1/A2 DU rounds. The Saudis and Kuwaitis can't buy these "silver bullets".

Both countries ordered M1A2's right after GW1. Thy wanted to have cutting edge equipement and therefore there were lot of spendings for high-tech military hardware of all kind in the whole Gulf region in early 90's...

They bought their tanks about 5-10 years ago, when Iraq was still a potential threat. At least 75% of the tanks have remained in warehouses, however, and only 25% have ever been used for training purposes and the like.

Now, I suppose their greatest thread is Iran, but they don't pose a serious threat of a ground invasion. Possibly an unstable, post-US Iraq could cause security problems, however.
