:D Hi,
I think you mean a "Kova Tembel" (fools hat) which indeed resembles a Beanie hat. It is associated with the Kibbutz movement rather than the IDF, but was used particularly by reservists who brought their own hats when called up in 1967.
I remember them being used right up to the early 1970s, but as far as I know, they were never official issue.
No photos sorry, but if you go to the Israeli government press office site they will have photos. I don't know the address, you will have to use Google.
cheers

Hi Fulix,
As Tyovn has said, you have drawn a Kova Raful which did not go into IDF service until the late 1970s, long after the 6 Day War. this is known in English as a Bush Hat.
There is a possibility that you mean an unofficial hat used by the IDF, which was a cheap copy of the WWII Australian army hat, which was seen in use during the 6 Day War. However your drawing does look like the Kova Raful.

We use today the "kova tembel" (the actual bonnie hat) for it protects effectivelay from the sun.
But your pictures reminded me of an "older" version, used during the end of 50`s beginning 60`s, that was no more than the french colonial hat, as seen during the Indochina war. I had one of thse "collector", bearing the צהל as well. Those hats were beige, with a reinforced rims and a "straight" edge on top, instead of the flat one of the "kova tembel".
The last picture I saw of those hats being used by the IDF referred to the "operation kadesh", the 1956 Sinai campaign. It is possible that the IDF received a batch of those, just like the "french camo" uniform issued to the paratroopers here and used during the 67 war.

Gilgoul thank you very much for helping.
I think you are the one that is more close to indentify the hat that i have. The comparsion is very good indeed, and the story seems to match! The photo of the French hat at Indochina war shows that the folds on my hat are different; my hat is different folded. As soon as possible i will try to take photos... and please, try to take pics from yours too... im very curious about this hat!
Cheers.

Gilgoul,
It seems that you got it. No more mistery. I think your theory is correct... i was searching on the web about the French hats and found this pic:
http://identifikator.free.fr/images/chapeau1.jpghttp://identifikator.free.fr/images/chapeau.jpg
It´s a hat used by French Marines in the 50´s at Senegal. It´s pretty much the same as the hat that i have, but mine is khaki and have the צהל inscription.
Now, let´s talk about the possibilities of where the hat could be worn...

I happen to have the hat you are talking about, unfortunately out of reach at my parents house in france.
I found it in a surplus about 12 years ago, and was surprised to see the צהל stamped on it, while I recognized the hat as a "chapeau de brousse".
Some old stuff like those ought to be kept, I guess there are not too many like those anymore :D

Finally i talk to my father and he told me the story.
His friend Mario Fontoura de Lima was a corporal from the Brazilian Army in a UN Peacekeeping mission (1957) at the Suez Canal (mission closed in 1967). The Brazilian troops were and are called here as Suez Battalion.
He was from the 20th contingent that went in the Suez canal in 1967.
Here some photos of the Suez Battalion:

Something that i want to find out, if possible, is from what unit the hat could be from. As Para`s worn French cammo, could this hat be from them?
Again, thanks for helping me.
Cheers

After the end of the war in Algeria, France gave away or sold a lot of surplus individual equipment.
The IDF got the "leopard" camo (called "lizard" by the english speaker...), the "chapeau de brousse" (bush hat) and other bits.
Those two items were used in overseas garrisson of the French army until the end of the 80s.

Thanks for the info... do you know what unit of the IDF worn (or were common to see them worn) the "chapeau de brousse"?
