Well not really, If you're drinking to get drunk alone (regularly) at your house, then that is a form of alcoholism

health issues from drinking, craving alcohol, and inability to stop once you start drinking are a few

Thats more like what i was thinking of as alcoholism.
Habitual drinking.
Not drinking alone. Sometimes a guy gets home from work and has some beers before bed. Unless hes doing it all the time, i wouldnt consider him to be an alcoholic.

Drinking alone and drinking to get drunk are two different things. I am the only adult in my household, and after my kids go to bed, I sometimes have a drink or two. That means that I do drink alone. However, I am not an alcoholic. I sometimes go months without drinking, and I'm not sure when I got drunk last. To me, an alcoholic is someone who has a need to drink on a regular basis.

I mean that one who goes home and who finds the need to drink, and drinks to the point of being drunk, while being alone. (and later getting dependant) is an alcoholic

From a medical standpoint, alcoholism is usually diagnosed when a person has a mental and/or physical NEED for alcohol where their body literally requires it to function as normal.

Having a wine or beer a day isn't being an alcoholic, it's when you drink uncontrolably or you can't handle yourself when you begin to drink.

I find this definition quite good:
What is alcoholism?
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease that includes the following four symptoms:
- Craving--A strong need, or urge, to drink.
- Loss of control--Not being able to stop drinking once drinking has begun.
- Physical dependence--Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking.
- Tolerance--The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to get "high."
So apparently someone who falls in all the above categories is an alcoholic...there are other definitions as well but more or less they say the same thing.
The interesting thing is that alcoholism cannot be actually cured...it can only be dealt with only by completely staying away from alcohol. It might have to do with genetics as well.

Alcoholism is when booze quits becoming a want and becomes a need.
Drinking alone is not a good test. Someone can be an alcoholic yet can go to bars whenever they need their fix. Conversely, someone can get drunk to the point where they can't stand, and yet not be physically addicted to alcohol.
I'll admit to doing the latter sometimes when I'm completely bored for a night. I get smashed and then surf the web or play videogames. Yet if I have something better to do that day, I don't even think about alcohol. I certainly don't have a need for it. Therefore, I am not an alcoholic, even though I sometimes drink to get drunk, and I sometimes drink alone.

Drinking to become drunk all the time is what I consider being an alcoholic.
