NASSAU BAY, Texas - Nearly 40 protesters gathered Saturday at the home of the chief financial backer of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose ads criticize Democrat John Kerry's military record.

Bob J. Perry didn't appear to be at his suburban Houston home and didn't answer three doorbell rings by several veterans wanting to hand-deliver a letter asking him to stop supporting the group.

"We deeply resent what he's doing to the veterans," said Richard Zaner, 70, a Korean War veteran who lives in the same suburb as Perry, a wealthy homebuilder.

Kerry supporters chanted "Hey, hey, ho, ho, your stinkin' ad has got to go." A Nassau Bay policeman was parked nearby.

Bill Miller, Perry's spokesman, said this week that Perry provided at least $100,000 to help found the group at the request of his friend John O'Neill, a Houston lawyer who co-wrote a book questioning Kerry's military record. Miller also said that Perry, who doesn't grant interviews, was in Mexico this week.

The ads challenged Kerry's Vietnam service for which he received five medals. The ads said Kerry didn't deserve his Purple Hearts, lied to get his Bronze Star and Silver Star and unfairly branded all veterans with his 1971 congressional testimony about atrocities in Vietnam.

The Kerry campaign rebutted the ads with Navy records and witnesses who served with him. Kerry contends the group is a front for President Bush's re-election campaign. Bush denounced the ads Monday after they were no longer on the air.

I know, but Bush didn't base his campaign on how tough he is (personally).

Bush's whole campaign is based on a bastard child of a war that he inherited because of his "tough guy" stance.

Bush claims to be tough on terrorism.

Kerry claims he's a tough soldier. Then he cries when fellow vets question his service.

Bush was crying because the 527 were questioning him and continues to.

It's a tit for tat game they both play. Kerry campaign was looking for an excuse to counter Bush's FEC complaint and accussations. The SBV's gave him the perfect opportunity by getting advice from a Bush campaign lawyer and featuring another Bush campaign member in their ad's BEFORE they resigned from their positions in the Bush campaign.

So they can question Bush's record, but can't take it when Kerry's record comes into question? There is always two sides to coin. Trying to supress the Swift boat vets is violating their Freedom of Speech.

Ben Ginsberg tendered his resignation to keep from feeding the political fury..not because he was coordinating...the dems know this isn't illegal to give legal advice to both but he resigned to avoid "getting in the way of Bush message". Anyways, he couldnt disclose as he was a lawyer advising the Swift Boat people and confidentiality forbade him disclosing to the Bush campaign. The other was an un-paid advisor/volunteer which isnt part of the Bush campaign.

Mr. Ginsberg said his role was no different from that of Robert Bauer, a lawyer the Kerry campaign shares with America Coming Together, a liberal group that is organizing a huge multimillion-dollar get-out-the-vote drive that is far more ambitious than the Swift boat group's activities.

Joe Sandler, a lawyer for the DNC and a group running anti-Bush ads, MoveOn.org, said there is nothing wrong with serving in both roles at once.

We shouldnt hold our breaths to see Robert Bauer, Joe Sandler, Zach Exley and Jim Jordan to follow suit though. The Dems are gonna wish they'd never started this. (http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110005514)

Btw, with all the hoopla with so called "collusions" of late, leave it up to the media to point out the real collusions...

A letter to MoveOn members from John Kerry (http://www.moveon.org/pac/cands/kerry.html)
The Democratic Party is partnering with MoveOn.org (http://www.democrats.org/wvc/weekinreview/200305120002.html)

The Democratic Party is partnering with MoveOn.org, People for the American Way, Campaign for America's Future, and dozens of other groups representing millions of Americans to organize a massive public mobilization. On Wednesday, May 14, join us by calling and emailing your representatives in Congress to let them know that the majority of Americans oppose more irresponsible tax cuts that go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest sliver of Americans.
The DNC is also conducting a major petition drive in partnership with MoveOn.org. (http://www.democrats.org/news/200311140002.html)
"The DNC is also conducting a major petition drive in partnership with MoveOn.org. More than 310,000 Americans have signed the petition to protect our courts — with more than 172,000 of those signatures coming in the past 36 hours . . ."

I haven't seen Kerry crying. I've seen him demanding that these Swift Boat Republicans stop LYING and slandering him in public, but I haven't seen him crying or whining or doing anything that might be considered weak.

Last thing I saw Kerry do was snowboard. Snowboarding at 61? Hockey? Motorcycle riding? Hunting? Playing guitar? You don't notice any of those things, do you scm77? Just like you can't understand the difference between being a war hero and being an AWOL coward.

Not illegal, but common sense should have dictated that he not represent both of them if he had any consideration for "the message" to begin with. As an educated man he should have known that when this information came to light it would look bad for Bush to the average voter.

Anyways, he couldnt disclose as he was a lawyer advising the Swift Boat people and confidentiality forbade him disclosing to the Bush campaign.

He's hiding behind that now. He shouldn't have had an agreement with them to begin with - legal or not. He should have simply said "here is the name of a very good colleague that can help you" - to who ever asked for his assistance second.

The point was the FEC complaints are part of a game they play with each other. Bush filed an FEC complaint and accussed Kerry of coordinating with the 527's and Kerry did the same thing to counter the affect of Bush's. It's all part of the game. Though Bush's complaints are about stifling freedom of speech in general and Kerry's is about challenging specific accussations. If one is "crying" then they both are.

You can't hit a man and then expect him not to hit back.
