The only way to do more push-ups...is to do more push-ups.

I could max the push-up portion of the APFT but that was in the spring. I used to do 4 sets of 30-35 after my workout on the weights and all that good stuff. Working other muscle groups definitely helps. Strengthen your biceps and triceps with curls and bench presses. Strengthen your lower back and abs. You will see an incredible amount of improvement if you work all the muscle groups to go along with that extra emphasis on what you want to improve, in this case push-ups.

Good luck, pain is weakness leaving the body. ;)

Do what Jack does: every moment you're bored, do some pushups. When you do enough of em every day, you'll notice improvements.

25 push ups? I do 25 push ups with one arm and one finger :lol:

Push ups is my main excercise for years. What I do is I like to do a variation of push ups such as diamond push ups, wide arm push ups, incline push ups, decline push ups, weight assisted push ups, Rocky push ups (it's when you push yourself off the ground and clap your hand once) and so on so on.

Doing push ups when you watch TV is great too. I do that every single day.

p.s my max push ups i've ever done was 148 push-ups with good form in an APFT.

Not to brag or anything, but, I always aced the APFT in the military with a 300 score and got to wear a neat little badge on my PT's.

I usually did the 2 mile runs under 13 minutes. Did well over 100 push-ups in 2 minutes, and did well over 100 sit-ups in 2 minutes.

Just keep at the push-ups and you will start getting stronger in them.

My max is 60 at the moment, i start working out the moment i wake up. It's to get used to the military routine (want to become a marine), i start the day with;
- 50 push-ups
- 60 sit-ups
- 5 pull-ups
- some exercises for my under-arms

The way i made it to sixty was simple, just keep doin' em till ur arms cant carry u anymore. Watch the controll of your breath; breathe out when pushing up, breathe in when going down.

PT!! Make it hurt!!

Good luck with the workout!!

A method we used in bootcamp, to improve push ups and pull ups my DI liked to call the pyramid method. It worked for me.
Basically figure out your max pull ups. Then start the exersise with half of this.
So say your max is 20 pull ups, begin with 10 pull ups then do double the push ups, and go down to 1.
So 10 pull ups, 20 push ups followed by,
9 pull ups 18 push ups followed by,
8 pull ups 16 push ups.
7 pull ups 14 push ups etc etc and go all the way down to 1 pull up, 2 push ups. Finish the exersise by doing as many of each as you can(usually not many after all this!)

that is called a 4 count pushup and equates to 2 pushups performed to everyone counted - nice try.

Hey Dennis. I don't know if you have "Kick Ass, Take Names" but in it, Matt explains that Hindu pushups aren't Dive Bombers. The first part is basically the same but in Dive bombers you go back through the arc motion, whereas in the Hindu, you go through the first part, and then straigh back into the starting pushups. The reason for this is that it gives you a stretch. I do both ;). It's a little bit easier than a Dive bomber...but it just adds a stretch in there. I love those exercises because it's like a handstand pushup to a reg pushup to a dip. It's great!

I did a lot of pushups over winter break. I did 20 for every time I got killed in Call of Duty :lol: . I can do handstand pushups now (About 5), but I never seem to bulk up :lol:. I think it's from the wrestling. :lol:

Wouldn't it be a 2 count push-up? Every count of 2 actually equals 1? So divide the number by 2 to get the real value? I've always counted the normal way where an up and down motion is 1 push up. The first time and only time I've seen up and down being counted seperately was by some Marine MP's in Quantico.

Anyways, my one day total is 1001.

The way I count them is you go down, and then come back up... that's 1. I've gone up to 75 recently. It seems I can do a different amount every day, just depends on how my body feels.

no, it is the 4 count pushup as in:
1 = down
2 = up
3 = down
4 = up and the current repitition (called when conducted in cadence, therefore counted as 1, 2, 3, 1 - 1, 2, 3, 2 - 1, 2, 3, 3 - 1, 2, 3, 4) - it is an excercise conducted in formation as opposed to the traditional pushup as conducted during a PT test.
There for for every 2x down and return to the start position you count a single pushup.

as opposed to a fitness test in which:
the pushup event measures the endurance of the chest, tricep, blah blah muscles.. on eth command det set assume the front leaning rest position. your feet may be together or up to 12 inches apart. when viewed from the side your body should form a generall straight line from your shoulders to ankles. one the commande go begin by lowering your body as a single unit until your upper arms are ATLEAST parrallel to the ground and return to the start position by raising your enitre body as a single unit until; your arms are fully extended. your body should remain in a generally straight line and move as a unit while perfomring each pushup. if you fail to keep your body as a generally straight line, to lower your body as a whole unit until your upper arms are at least parallel to the ground or fail to extend your arms completely that repitition will not count. blah blah blah - the scorer will repeat the number of the last correctly performed pushup blah blah... if you fail to correctly perform the first 10 pushup, the scorer will tell you to go to your knees and will explain your mistakes nad you will be sent to the end of the line. once you have completed more than 10 it is on like donkey kong. The ony authorized rest position is the front leaning rest position, that is you can bow your back or sag int he middle. when flexing your back you may not do so that your legs support the bulk of your weight blah blah.. if it occurs the test is terminated.. if you rest on the ground, raise either a hand or foot from the ground or your feet exceed 12 inches apart, your test is terminated. blah blah blah I don't remember any more except.. you have two minutes to do as many pushup as you can. Watch the demonstrator (whoalways makes jokes) and what are your questions at this time?

ie straight line - hands feet on ground to never leave - only allowed to rest in a pushup position - all the way down until the large bone of the upper arms is atleast parallel with the ground and return to the start position with arms fully extended. As the start position is pushup position with arms fully extended - each reptition is counted when you return to the position.

One thing to keep in mind when doing press ups:

Maintain the appropriate form, when it counts the PTIs only count the GOOD ones, not the half-ass bragging rights ones.

How many can you do ibstolidude?

The question should be how many HAS he done, break out a calculator ;)

One thing to keep in mind when doing press ups:

Maintain the appropriate form, when it counts the PTIs only count the GOOD ones, not the half-ass bragging rights ones.

I just did my first RFL of the year last night...not bad for an old guy ;)

What is the RFL exactly? is there a certain number you have to do? or is it just testing what you can do?

The RFL is the Required Fitness Level for the NZ Army.

It tests for time over a 2.4km distance, # of press-ups, # of sit-ups. Combined scores can result in 3 categories for those tested: G1,G2,G3.

Requirements are slightly adjusted for both gender and age.

Acceptable times for men are:

under 10 minutes in the run
40-50 press-ups(absolute minimum 28)
130 situps(absolute minimum about 70)

Although no matter what you do the PTIs are NEVER happy :lol:
