GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Five explosions went off several minutes apart in Gaza City on Thursday, and large plumes of smoke rose into the sky, witnesses said.

The cause of the blasts was not immediately clear. Ambulances raced to the scene, but there was no word of casualties.

The explosions went off in the Rimal neighborhood, about 300 yards from the local U.N. headquarters.

3 Palestinians Killed in Israeli Attack

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - An Israeli helicopter fired five missiles at car belonging to a senior Hamas official Thursday, killing three Palestinians, including the official's bodyguard, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Hamas official, Ismail Abu Shanab, was also in the gold-colored station wagon when it was struck in the Rimal neighborhood. Paramedics pulled three bodies out of the burning vehicle, witnesses said.

The missile strike came two days after a Hamas suicide bomber blew himself up on a Jerusalem bus, killing 20 people, including five Americans. There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military.

In the past, Israel has repeatedly killed wanted Palestinians in targeted missile attacks. Israel had suspended the practice after militants declared a unilateral truce June 29. On Thursday, however, Israel said it would resume targeted killings if the Palestinians don't take immediate action against militant groups.

Witnesses said the station wagon was driving in the Rimal neighborhood and had slowed down to avoid a large stone in the road when a first missile struck the front of the vehicle. A second missile quickly followed, said Naim Shaban, who owns a metal workshop nearby.

"I threw myself under a table in my shop, and the explosions continued," said Shaban. "Flames were coming from everywhere. When it stopped, I saw one helicopter turning west, toward the sea. I rushed to the car, and saw people burning inside."

Dozens of Hamas supporters at the scene dunked their fists in blood and soot, raised them in the air and threatened revenge, chanting "God is great."

In June, Israel fired missiles at the car of another Hamas leader, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, who escaped with minor injuries.

Two days earlier, Hamas had carried out a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, killing 20 people, but insisted at the time it was still observing the truce.

Observing a truce by carrying out suicide bombing...I didn't get that memo.
