You have to wonder if all those Aimpoints are turned on...? Hope so, since it takes 3 clicks to get past the NVG IR level settings...

why would they be turned?
i think if the need came theyd be on in a hurry
if not a bet some have xtra batteries in those pockets
it would be too funny to see someone change out batteries in a gun fight.

The new Aimpoints with CET technology last typical about 10 years on the same battery.

Not trying to challenge ya, but for what reasons do you believe this?

Well... To start off New York City has four times as many law enforcement personel as LAPD. So in total they have around forty thousand law enforcment personel! They also are known to have trained with Delta Force and Seal Team Six (LAPD SWAT has as well). Besides that, they not only do SWAT stuff, but are also in charge of all rescue operations in the New York area. The selection is only one of the toughest in law enforcement, ranking among FBI HRT, and Border Patrol's BORTAC. Plus, they're doing something everyday, they are called out nearly 300 days of the year!
Just some thoughts :| ;)

You've got to remember that ESU performs a lot of other fuctions besides just tactical entry. They do limited Bio/Chem work, confined space work, high angle rescue, SCUBA body recovery, and extraction (from a wreck not a hot LZ). This makes them much more than just a SWAT team.

yeh theyre the ones who got mad at me for being passed out on my friends stoop. So the yalso do normal patrols.
Thanks for the pics. There was a time when it was rare to see these guys in action (at a large fire/accident/building collapse/LE situation) but these days, they're everywhere. I hear they've become somewhat of a tourist attraction, downtown. Out-of-towners like to stand next to them for photos, when in the financial district.

well NYPD 24/7 was on they did a whole episode with the ESU...which was cool.
Showed them doing some breaches, responding to a man tryin to commit suicide, ply wood flying off buildings, a drunken puerto rican being pulled over and then getting pushed into a fence by the ESU officer....bunch of ****

Yeah well I happen to work about 4 blocks from the RNC and they are literally my new security guards everyday in order to get to work.
Here's a pic I took of one on Monday, he was very cool and the only one who didnt mind me touching his m4! And to follow up on the aimpoint question, it so funny this is asked because, he told me he had his off and that it also can last about a week straight on plus he has his back up flips on the rifle so maybe that helped?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v397/studrican22/RNC04004.jpg the building in the middle of the street is the front of madison square garden! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v397/studrican22/RNC04005.jpgHere's a pic of scouts and snipers on top of the RNC (MSG)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v397/studrican22/RNC04002.jpg
And in this pic, the cop pointing at me told the uniformed cop to ask me whats in my camera (meaning what pics am I taking) and I voluntered to show him and he said "not to worry about it" and to "move it along" [u] but it got kinda scary when he yelled at me and all the cops (even the ones you don't see) started grabbing there m4 a little tighter!

Yeah, NYPD has a slight manpower advantage over the LAPD (9.500 vs. 42.000+). Oh, btw, the US Coast Guard only numbers 34,000. Imagine, a domectic law enforcement agency with more sworn personel than a branch of the armed forces. :D

Ya, the NYPD are pretty laid back, and easy to talk to, as long as they're not dealing with something, at that moment.
There's a bombsquad member, who I've seen at every fleet week since 2000 -- manning the same VCP -- when I asked him about his bomb dog, "Dakota" and the capabilities of some of their equipment. We had a pretty long talk, and he recognised me the following year, and since then, I look for him whenever I go to fleet week.

Are all the ESU and Swat members using the M4 ?
Oh...my gosh......they look like the soldier , if they don't use MP5 , their's no police feeling any more .... :|
They sometimes use the MP-5. I've even seen them with M-14's. :D

Not wanting to start a flame war, but I find it very strange to use those cops (that you all describe as highly trained) standing, helmet on the head and loaded for bear like a vulgar air force gate keeper instead of using regular cops and keeping the special ones for when they are needed.
Somehow, I can't picture GIGN or Kobra members rifle in hand standing in front of a door looking tough for hours on ends.

The "Hercules" members of ESU (who most of the pictures are of) have the job of appearing at high-visibility sights with a higher probability of being surveilled by terrorist recon/spotters. "Hercules" was created after 9/11. Their function is to make terrorists move on to the next target, at the planning stage.
And as was previosly stated, the NYPD is HUGE. Larger than many national armies.

Cops armed that heavily just seems wrong to me. I mean, what are the chances of them having to use the carbines where SMG's or pistols would have been inadequate, and what the ramifications of that use would be? People have been complaining since A-stan II that .223 overpenetrates. The whole idea of arming them with M4's in NYC seems ludicrous.
Beardog

In my experience .223 don't overpenatrates.
Remember the Hollywood shooting. The lapd cops armed with 9mm pistols and submachines were out classed by two well armed and armoured robbers.
The lapd had to borrow .223 carbines from a local arms dealer.

i read somewhere about a firefight with marines,
one marine said that up to 75m, a 5.56 would just go straight through a person
and past that distance, the target would fall and not get back up.
anyway, i think cops would be better off with mp5s and m4s.
something about being able to completely cover a torso
with 9mm bullets and then u have the punch of the 223 to go through
any type of armour that target is wearing is a good thing.

The military is a poor example for those seeking information about terminal effects of 5.56. Civilians have a huge advantage in they can use hollow point rounds. Those are HIGHLY effective and do a number on the target. Big ugly holes... The military must use FMJ to avoid charges of being "inhuman"...
Also, using the 14.5 inch barrel doesn't give the round the highest velocity possible. The 16" barrel is the best compromise to obtain acceptable velocity without being overly difficult to handle.
All of my ready mags here are loaded 10/20. First 10 are hollow points, the other twenty are FMJ. The first and last are tracer.
