View Full Version : Is militaryphotos.net losing its appeal?

Does anyone else feel that this great forum is sinking in a morass of immaturity, insipidness and ignorance lately?

The photos, with the exception of personal airsoft gear, are still worth a visit, but it seems there are a dozen crappy threads for every decent one.

Adolescents arguing, pacifists preaching, hobbyists being belittled and the trading of insults makes for dull reading.

I've opted to participate in only threads that seem to be on theme and free of "flame wars," but even those few soon take on the characteristics of kids fighting in the playground during recess.

Or is it just me?

There are too many wannabe's in here. I play and have played paintball for the better part of 15 years. I have also served in the US Army and I am currently in the Navy Reserves. The last time I checked, the name of this site is MILITARYphotos.net. I also think that there is too much profanity. There is no need to show your ignorance by cussing all of time time.

Yeah sometimes this seems to be a swamp of flaming indeed and not about the real issue; the sweet military related pictures.
Unfotrnuately I don't see a real solution to the problem =/

Far too many kids and armchair wannabes.

Ridiculous polls/questions e.g. which war was most warlike, or who fights best - goodies or baddies.

Let's get back to serious military matter without the crap we've been seeing lately.

Maybe few new topic categories would help? like
strategy&history , renacting(airsoft), politics, current events, equipment, wannabes ... so interesting post in category would not wanish quickly & uninterested members could avoid unwanted topics.

But like for me is OKt(best i could find in the net)

I came here because I needed good photo's for work. This place has a phenomenal collection of current photos. If I ever need a question answered about equipment on a current operation or something like that I'm definitely going to ask it here. I like that it's international to some degree. I'll never understand why anyone would pretend to be something they're not, ESPECIALLY when there are REAL pro's around. It's stupid and immature. But it is endemic on the internet as a whole. Nothing new there.

I really like this site, and while at times it can get tiresome when some people act immature (myself included), I still find it appealing. Like California Joe said, if you need a question answered, there's a lot of folks here in the know.

I'd agree that there are alot of people who just post crap, but every message board is like that. I really enjoy reading posts by guys like Tane, XASA, and ibstoli. Its great to hear what they have to say. I'd be great if we had some more people with some more expiriance, but hey, its not like we're paying for this.

just too bad theres' no way to screen comments based on who wrote them. or even have a forum for prior/current military, and another for the kids to talk about airsoft or whatever it is they feel like bantering about. As a whole this forum is grea,t I dont mind answering questions about my job a bit, but it seems like any topic that goes on for more then 15 replies goes to hammered wolf ****. eh, what can you do? its the internet

Well, it's also called growing pains. I'm sure a lot of the people on here can remember when we only had 1 forum category only a few months ago. The creation of the 2nd one happened because there were too many people posting to fit within one section. We're pretty much at that point again so we're going to need at least 1 more, probably 2. I'll work on it this weekend and modify the rules to keep things organized. I don't think that the airsoft guys are necessarily a bad thing, but if you don't give the various people on here a correct place to say what they want, it just all gets jumbled together and people's opinions collide.

I think this site is great.

Despite the occasional trolls (people who aren't military pretending to be military, and pacifists coming to MILITARYphotos.net to start a squabble), this forum is in better shape than most I've seen. And the photos part of the site is the best resource of it's kind that I know of.

hood, heres' an idea. not sure if it's really feasable, but maybe setting up some sort of chat section to the place. might draw more people in. juust a sort of random (drunken) thought

well, I think there are some negatives that go along with chat. first, it's not logged like forum posts are. there are lots of people on here that read the forums who never post. If you look at the "current users" more than half are guests with no login. With chat, it's out the window as soon as someone says something and the greater populous doesn't get the benefit of reading and learning, or joining in when it's fits their schedule. Forums are great because it's 24/7. :)

Secondly is anonymity. IRC and java chat solutions (at least the ones I've seen) always show people's ip addresses and/or email addresses to everyone else. Talking about guns and other military things can get heated at times, and I think it's a good thing that people can't see exactly where other people are hitting the site from without going through me. I've been the target of people trying to find me to harass me over content on the site at times and I learned the hard way that the every day user doesn't want that kind of grief because of some wacko at his computer who decides to go on a jihad.

fair 'nuff, i'm not terribly computer savvy anyways, just a random idea to change things up a wee bit.

The threads that degenerate into "contests" are wearing. It is also irritating when someone who doesn't toe the party line vis-a-vis current U.S. foreign policy, Iraq, etc. gets attacked from every direction, intead of getting engaged in rational dialogue. There was some criticism of another sight recently, where everything was about "high fives" and "chest pounding". Sometimes that seems like what takes place here.

Anyway... There should be a forum dedicated to Military History, IMHO. :)
