what's it mean ? how can you be in the Reserves if you didn't served in the army ?

Merik

Here in the US you have a choice of serving full-time with the active Military, joining the Reserves, or the National Guard. The National Guard differs from the Reserves in that they have combat arms units and are run by the state and not the federal government like the Reserves.

in the US, anyone may join any service (or it's reserve) at age 18. I know one can join up with the Navy and Marines at age 17 with the consent of the parents.

Me, personally, will join up when I am about 22 or 23, depending on the time of year ;) (Im 19 right now)

You can join any branch of the military at the age of 17 with the consent of your parents. The only drawback though is that you can not go active duty(full-time) until you are out of school. And you can not be deployed until the age of 18.

I think that one should at least have ones pubic hairs fully outgrown before being deployed. Do not see that as an drawback.

Yes, I know that some of the AA-gunners on HM Ships were just 16 during the Falkland War.

But there is a reason for the age limit. You that are not old enough cannot understand that. And that is why I am glad that there is a age limit. :)

i was supposed to leave july 10, 2003 for the US Army but i shattered my hand in a lacrosse game (rough sport) and needed surgery. so i'm waiting to get all the paper work back so i can sign up again, my recruiter said i'll prolly leave late october or early november. 100-percent-hooah, what did you get on your ASVAB? i got in the 91st percentile, btw, i'm an 11x too, hopefully gonna get the chance to go to a Ranger or Airborne unit, though i think i should focus on completing basic first...

p.s. dont think just because i scored in the top 91% that i am a tall + skinny or short + fat nerdy type my friend... like some of those other guys that claim to be joining the infantry

You can join AND go to basic upon reaching 17 years of age, but you need parental permission until you're 18, at which point they play no role in your enlistment.

General Technical test. It basically tests you on how much technical knowledge(what it says)you have. Mechanical, mathematical, etc. are some of the stuff included.

Im not sure what a 91st percentile would be score-wise, but my score was a 107 on the GT. 3 more points and I can qualify as a entrant in the Flight School after High School program.

about the age limit; there's another reason for it; i.e. in the netherlands here regular army etc. is open from 17 years, but marines & kct (dutch SOF) is 18 years minimum...its cus of all the heavy loads u carry.. some people still grow a little when theyre 17, so the minimum is 18 so everyone is fully grown and wont mess up their backs or anything

GT? what is this my friend? good luck with your Bradley training by the way...
Thanks man... GT is a General Technical score, honestly I am not exactly sure what it measures  (does anyone here know??) , but as I understand it is the most important score on the ASVAB. Like to go SF, you need 110 GT. I believe I got 117, but have no idea what percentile that is. Look up on your asvab score sheet, it should list all the different tests and scores.

warchild1/27scout
08-24-2003, 04:12 PM
25th id (light) 11b and batt. scouts 91-94. dimitri that would be an awesome gt score of 117. i had 105 and went to asvab workshop to better my gt to atleast a 110 for sf but never went. and about sniper school, our snipers just had to get accepted to batt. recon and then they'd have to wait for a sniper slot which would usually take a while until then they would still fill the role in training of a sniper.

not to toot my own horn, but some Army recruiter asked me to take an ASVAB test off the record, just cause he saw my school transcripts (staight As across the board, honors and AP classes, accepted to UCLA, Berkeley, etc) to see what sort of jobs I could get in the military.

He called me up a few days later and told me that he was ready to sign me up and gaurentee me a spot in Army intelligence which (he said anyways) is the hardest part of the Army to get into as a green recruit.

But, he WAS a recruiter, so take it all with a grain of salt ;)

SABER 2-3

Your G.T. score is your most important score because it is a composite of all tested material. All S.F. canidates must (no waiver available) have a minimum GT of 110. I belive that OCS canidates have the same standard.

Angel,

Recruiters do act as "talent scouts," if you will, for the military. When a candidate takes preliminary testing and scores high, they will try to steer them to intelligence and other units that require high scores. Keep in mind the enlistment might be longer due to lengthy training. When I enlisted I wanted to be in ordnance but got steered to the Army Security Agency. Out of 72 months service, I spent more than 18 months in training. Believe me, being in intelligence isn't like any other branch of the service and it's well worth considering. Make sure, though, you can pass a security check before you sign on the bottom line if you do decide to go into intelligence...and get any promise in writing.

Joined as a 16 year old in '86. No problems with load carrying on my Commando Course. But you're right, by the time I joined Recce Tp I'd put a fair bit of muscle on (I was a skinny little **** at 16) and that made load carrying alot easier.

As for 16 year olds in the South Atlantic, they weren't just AA gunners on the ships. All three Commando's and both 2 and 3 Para had 16 or 17 year olds on the ground.

It is only recently that UK forces have restricted operational roles to over 18's (Northern Ireland was always an exception to this rule - hence the fact that I spent my first NI tour in Belize! (I was still 16).

Hopefully if all goes well I will be doing basic this fall and hopefully I will get accepted to RMC for 2004 cause man I wanna go to the school so bad I would do anything. By the Way RMC is the Royal Militay College for Canada and its a university but they integrate your officer training so that you graduate simultaneously with a degree and your officer's badge or whatever oh that would be so great.

A GT score of 110 will make you eligible for just about anything. I got a 128, so I didn't have too much problem getting into OCS.

Good Luck to all those who look forward to serving in the future.

Served in Finnish Defence Forces 2005-2006, currently in reserve as a corporal and a squad leader of Panssarijääkärikomppania (the Armoured Jäger Company). I'm starting to get interested in International Peacekeeping missions though...

Holy shyte. Wonder if that sets some sort of internetz record?

And might as well contribute to the original intent of the necropost... 22 years U.S. Army, as a 19D Cav Scout. Aug 85-Oct 07, and would still be in boots if it weren't for medical issues. But...glad that I am done now, lol.
