Most likely some ambiguous relic policy, left over form the Cold War. Our way of saying, basically, 'if for whatever reason, we decide we need it, we wont hesitate in taking it and this is just a heads up'. It's probably insignificant these days.

NEVER!!!!

The highly classified units of Beastly Antarctic Dragoon Assasination Stealth Squadrons aka Bad Ass will triumph against anyone!

Penguins can be mean lil buggers if provoked. Do not be fooled ;)

Don't tell anyone, but I have heard from very realiable source that the penguins have a hidden WMD factory there!

The satellite pictures I have seen, show that clearly.

This Antactica thing is very simple. If a country establishes a permanent base there (for example, Spain has two military-scientifical bases) that country has the right to keep some terrytory there. It's a way to say that the first to build a house owns the terrain.
That's an international agreement, what i don't uderstand is if the USA don't want their territory there ok, but why don't they recognise rest of us' right to own?

Well, they can't, you know. Because Hitler fled there with his most loyal of minions to his secret base under the ice, after faking his death in Berlin. Since then the Nazis are building their fleet of flying saucers, secretly abducting people and equipping them with mind control implants.
(That explains a lot about the state our world is in, doesn't it?)
Telling more would be too risky, sry. Only the tinfoil protects me...

My dad was stationed in Antartica for two years when he was in the navy many moons ago...

...yeah, said it was pretty cold there. So cold that you never got sick because bacteria and viruses freeze.

http://www.aad.gov.au/asset/information/atlas/Territories.GIF This is the continents claimant status. Aus, NZ, and America can share with Brit, the rest is up for grabs I guess ;)

The thing with Antartica, you can bet that there's huge miniral deposits underneath the surface.

Yea, they just got there and said it was their teritory. I believe this is a very important issue that will become even more important in the near future, because of the natural resources hidden down-under and perhaps even because of the fresh water reservoairs (read "ice"), who knows? I don't.

I'm driving my SUV everyday to help melt that ice and get to the goodies....Mhhhhhhaaaaahhhhahahahahaa..
