I was at a surplus store the other day and I was looking through a rack of vests and I found an Interceptor vest without the plates. The guy was selling it for 315 and I didnt have that on me or I would have bought it, but then I remembered the stories of people getting in trouble for selling interceptors, so I need to know, is this guy who is selling it legit?

I have heard that the government (not sure which agency, maybe FBI) is going after both buyers and sellers of restricted military gear such as the Interceptor vests. You cannot buy them new unless you are in the military and they are not supposed to be resold to the civilian market. That being said, you are a lot less likely to get caught if you buy it at a surplus store than you are on Ebay, where it is easy for them to track.
FYI, SDS (who won the OTV contract) produces replacement covers for Interceptors that I don't believe are restricted sale. All you would need to do is buy some foam or batting to put in place of the soft kevlar. They're still $135, but that's cheaper (usually) and more legal than buying a complete Interceptor.

I take it that Interceptors are sough after items in the surplus world? I bought one back (unknowingly) with me after comming back from a "job site" and I've had the local surplus store offering me close to $600 for it (still has the plates) I know its legal for civilians to own body armor but I didnt know it was a touchy subject owning military body armor.

I havent heard of the actual vest being illegal to sell or buy. I have however heard that selling or purchasing the military hard armor plates for such armor is illegal.

From Point Blank's website:
"Point Blank's Military version of the Interceptor(TM) OTV is manufactured for the sole use of the United States Military. Resale of the Military version of the Interceptor(TM) OTV to persons other than the United States Military is prohibited and subject to legal action."

I was under the assumption tht if you had the bullet proof plates then the vest would be illegal.

Yea, I thought so too. The vest itself is just cloth.. but the plates themselves are what makes them illegal.

No the vest is Kevlar and cloth, the plates are ceramic.

Most I've seen in the airsoft world are cheap Hong Kong knockoffs, not actualy military/goverment grade/production and they have no armor plates.
I don't see a problem with those.

I have read that it is illegal to export armour plates for vest out of the United states theya r I gather considerd a munition. I have never heard that it was illegal to possess such plates within the U.S. Im pretty sure you could buy trauma plates from U.S. Cavalry. Of course maybe the plates in an interceptor are in some way different, Ive never seen one up close.

Speaking of Interceptors - is the FLC (Fighting Load Carrier) intended to be worn over that - since the Interceptor is the 'replacement' for the PASGT vest? I thought the Interceptor had PALS but probably not half as much as the FLC has.

Ah yes , the interceptor...
I've been thinking about getting one of those copies of it for myself. However , there's just this one store that sells them here in Finland. Now the one that I'm talking about here is a copy made by a company named "Guarder" (don't know which part of the world they're from , and about their quality either).
Supposedly , this one is supposed to be a pretty good copy..So maybe you ran across one of these ?

And hear this , gentlemen: this copy's got the slots for the plates as well. Don't know about the general quality of the sewing though../i]

I own a copy of the Guader interceptor vest and can tell you its very good quality, cordura is pretty strong stuff :P but it will probably be cheaper to buy it of one of the hong kong retailers like WGC because shops like stormtec just add like 30% because of VAT and stuff. :|
BTW Guarder is a Honk Kong bassed company i believe

I dont remember what i payed for shipping, not that much i surpose but the product itself was more expensive at stormtec and i had to wait for my order for like 4 weeks.
if you are only buying the vest and live in holland you could order it from stormtec. but if you want to order more stuff with the vest i would go for wgc.

I can perfectly understand that the Entire interceptor vest is illegal for purchase to .civ.
BUt the armour plates being illegal to sell to civs?
If level3A is readily available, why should level 4 hard armour plates be illegal ?

The IBA and SAPI(Small Arms Protective Insert) plates are an accountable issue items. Thats why they're illegal to sell.
Besides there people out there that NEED these not so you can feel cool wearing a "real" stuff. Just buy the replica.
