View Full Version : The $10-Per-Gallon Gas Has Arrived, In Paris

Wow.....I can only imagine how Americans would react.

And now, €2-per-liter gasoline has arrived! More precisely, it has arrived at a gas station in the Rue Saint-Antoine in Paris, not far from the Bastille, in the 4th arrondissement. I used to walk by it every day an eternity ago when I lived in “le Marais” as the arrondissement is called. It’s a tiny gas station with rip-off prices by a parking garage entrance. And now it had the audacity to be the first in France to charge €2.02 per liter. $10 a gallon.

It was reported on Carbeo.com, a site that tracks gas prices across France, and then made the national news, though it must have done little to bring business to the station. The national average, which has been hitting all-time highs since late last year, was €1.62 ($8 per gallon) as of last week, also a record, according to the Ministry of Sustainable Development—they have a ministry for everything in France.

Fuel is taxed heavily in France (and in Europe), which explains part of the difference in price to the US. But now there is an additional reason. In 2008, when gasoline in the US hit all-time highs, the euro was strong against the dollar, and since oil is priced in dollars, Europeans got a sweet deal, or at least they didn’t feel the pain as much. But the weaker euro has changed the scenario, and record gas prices have been washing over the Eurozone for months.

Thanks for your input. Now don't bitch about rising food prices, or does all your food grow within walking\biking distance as well?

I thought grocery stores grew the food out back. Well doggie, guess food gonna rise in price. Wait, it has and my wages stagnant. Guess I'll buy less junk and just pay my bills.

Did I bitch about my food prices? Did food prices started to rise only recently or were rising over the last 3-5 years? Fed's money printing drives both the price of food and the price of gas. Actually, a few farms do grow food within biking distance form me.

You don't care now, but wait till those farmers start raising the price of food to keep up. You may not care about gas prices yet, but you will. What happens when if and when your business moves? Are you going to move with it and bike to work or find a job withing biking distance?

I find it rather ignorant when people say "I don't care about gas prices, i walk, take the bus, bike to work". Give it time, you'll feel the pain, one way or another. It will creep up on you when you least expect it.

MT, lets pray for $20 a gallon gas!!!

I will use my vacuum sealer even more now I see. Prepping now is a good idea just in case (I live in hurricane ally). Getting a Costco membership this weekend, the store is like 50 miles away but I will be buying bulk dry goods instead of ordering now. Should save a good bit. Made room in my garage for cases of water.

No tin foil hat here, just dont want to be begging off neighbors if an emergency arises for more than several days.

I watched a documentary on hulu last weekend. Stated that all the fresh food (produce, vegetables) travel an average of 1500 miles to get to each store as a lot come from all different countries. We will definitely feel it and have been feeling it as gas goes up. I agree with you, people are ignorant.

That's a good thing. Actually had a "pal" tell me I was one of those tin foil hatters for, you know, living in tornado alley, having a bug out bag, canned food, bottles of water and defensive measures for when a disaster struck. Sucks for him. You are probably more inclined to be affected by a large disaster than us but atleast you are prepared. Can't go wrong with Costco/Sams. Typically you save, but not all the time. Have you done the mathematical calculation with the price of gas if its going to save you any money? p-) You know, being 50 miles away?

** Im interested. Got the name of the Doc? Love documentries, no matter what it be. There was an article i was reading where alot of food thats coming from over seas has been getting people sick due to contamination and X amount of people die yearly from it. I know rather bleak observation/point but Globalization ftw!

Meh, I stocked up on ammo and spent the rest of the the day at Costo writing down the licence numbers of folks that were obviously prepping and followed them home. Did I mention I love my GPS?

Modern farming is highly dependent on fossil fuels for production of fertilizer and pesticides..

Wait till the panic starts and oil gets back over $150 again, this time with a buggered economy.

Oh boy, the next few decades are going to be interesting. There was a time where we could have spent time and resources investing in a transition stage.

Too late now.

Heh, Yeah, I will save plenty even traveling the 50 miles. Dry beans, rice and wild rice, seeds in bulk. Much cheaper than Publix by far. Sprout the seeds and eat them as greens. You can survive on what I listed listed alone. Doesn't take much rooms to store 50lbs of rice. You can make a alcohol stove from coke cans if necessary and is cheap fuel.

The doc is The Future of Food

Pretty scary that they let these corporations patent living things now.

You know the 50+mpg cars already exist and many are used in Europe already. Why won't our government (EPA) let us have them? Or at least let us have them for another 10 years while science tries to figure out a cost effective fuel/power alternative. It would be a lot easier to market a 60-70+mpg $16,000 TDI KIA (the do exist) than the Volt right now. VW PASSAT TDI MSRP: $25,995 (RANGE 800 MILES) CHEVY VOLT MSRP:$49,6000 (RANGE 375 miles) WTF? Passat too dirty for you? Think about this then: how much coal does it take to run a Chevy Volt? vs. a diesel car?

I remember when i was learning to drive in 07. Petrol was about to rise about £1/litre and there was outrage. People claimed society couldn't function at that price. Now it's consistantly above £1.30

Yes.

Although it can take some getting used to getting a nice road bike can let you cover some pretty decent distances.

I'll be living the dream in 6hrs, 54 MPG is do-able in my 2004 Toyota Prius. (hint the largest factor is your speed, for those of you with grey hair remember Jimmy Carter ?).
May take an extra 10min to get to Rockford if I keep to the speed limit.

And I am jealous of Joesixpack, takes me 7min to ride to the El (subway) then another 20 minutes to get downtown. No accident bought my house with the CTA in mind.

Make sure you are getting the best price by checking pumps online everyday before spending. Can sometimes be decent savings to be had.
There is one consistently cheaper station near here, it's always packed, you have to Q to get in and it's about 3c a liter cheaper than average.

Yeah Meinteil, that passat will do even better MPG with cruise turned off, just leave your foot frozen around the average 57 mph and let the car speed up / slow down on hills as it wants. New diesels use no fuel when slowing down so best let it slow down on the engine as much a possible.
Going back a bit, the older passats with the 1.9TDI engine used to get up to 70 mpg on motorways.

You should have arrested him for crimes against the environment.

As you do repeat Surah 7:31 to him: "O children of Adam! ... eat and drink: but waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters."
