View Full Version : US soldiers in Iraq say 1,000 death toll meaningless

BAQUBA, Iraq (AFP) - The deaths of 1,000 American troops in Iraq since the 2003 invasion to topple Saddam Hussein has only strengthened US resolve to restore security to the strife-torn country, soldiers said.

Dismissing parallels with the 1961-75 war in Vietnam, officers lashed out at the media for playing the grim-reaper over the mounting casualty toll and failing to appreciate the sacrifices made by each soldier.

"It sucks. The newspapers glorify it. Everyday, reporting the numbers going up and up, trying to push a point," said Captain Gregory Wingard, 39, at the 1st Infantry Division's Camp Warhorse near Baquba, north of Baghdad.

Don't hear the same from every guy over there, but the media is always attempting to simplify things for the readers. It usually just leads to misinformation and confusion.

it is meaningless.... whats the difference between 999 and 1000.... or 348 and 349....
1.

Not to mention that the deaths due to enemy fire is under 650. (closer to 625)

Does anyone have a breakdown of how the non-combat deaths occured?

You really think that it would matter to a family member who just lost a son or daughter? No matter if something falls on you or you get shot, they are still dead.

1000 dead is not meaningless in anyway shape or form. How is it different now? About a month ago, the American dead was probably 1000 already counting all the PMCs and Soldiers. I suppose to the media that PMCs or "mercenaries" as some like to call them don't count towards the American dead. How about counting in Coalition dead? They don't count? Give me a break. The so called dreaded 1000 dead mark had been reached months ago. I think that since this so called "mark" has been reached it will be used as a tool to hurt Bush or for some form of political gain.

newsflash, they dont.

They're not being sent there by your government, they made a choice and are getting paid good money to be there. ;)

Its not to say that the deaths of PMC's are insignificant, but i think that in more ways than your average soldier they knew what they were getting into when they signed on.

Every one of these soldiers deaths is tragic on many levels.

However...

In November of 1943...in 3 days. Everything is relative and the names are listed below, right around 1500 of them. I think prove that...

And so it seems if you can make it to field grade, you pretty much outta the woods?

As with any conflict the painful toll is always paid by the youngest, the junior enlisted.

In many ways its the most tragic, as they are the ones with a best of their lives yet to be lived.

newsflash, they dont.

They're not being sent there by your government, they made a choice and are getting paid good money to be there. ;)

Its not to say that the deaths of PMC's are insignificant, but i think that in more ways than your average soldier they knew what they were getting into when they signed on.

;)

**** you and your winky face. A buddy of mine was killed in April in Iraq. I went to Afghanistan. I am going back next month. We weren't working for the money. It was just the right thing to do. What the **** did you do, ever?

U.S. PMC companies are all run by ex-military. They are doing it for the same reason enlisted men are: love of country / the bennies.
