Spectators and media watch the Genesis Sample Return capsule fall to earth on television screens Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The space capsule, containing particles of solar wind, was supposed have been snatched from the sky by a helicopter before hitting the ground, but the chute failed to deploy.

A member of the Genesis Sample Return team, shown in this image taken from video, looks at the capsule after it fell to earth without deploying its parachute Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The Genesis space capsule, which had orbited the sun for more than three years in an attempt to find clues to the origin of the solar system, crashed to Earth on Wednesday after its parachute failed to deploy.

It wasn't immediately known whether cosmic samples it was carrying back as part of a six-year, $260 million project had been destroyed. NASA officials believed the fragile disks that held the atoms would shatter even if the capsule hit the ground with a parachute.

The impact drove the capsule halfway underground. NASA engineers feared the explosive for the parachute might still be alive and ready to fire, keeping helicopter crews at bay.

A photo released by U.S. forces in Iraq (news - web sites) on September 8, 2004 shows U.S. soldiers purchasing soft drinks at a shop in the southern Iraqi town of Najaf. Republicans and U.S. military leaders sought on Wednesday to spotlight what they called the under-reported successes of the Iraq war, a day after the U.S. death toll in the conflict topped 1,000. While polls have shown most Iraqis want U.S. forces out, the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee heard from five former commanders in Iraq who said the vast majority of Iraqis they encountered welcomed the U.S.-led occupation.

REGIMENTAL PRAYER

Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.

We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.

Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.

Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.

Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.

Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!

Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.

Amen.

Try this (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/04/23/military/iraq/15_25_414_22_04.prt) ...

http://www.nctimes.com/content/articles/2004/04/11/military/iraq/19_30_504_10_04a.jpg

As the sun set Saturday, Lance Cpl. Jose Robles, 20, of Tustin and Cpl. Juan Perez, 24, of the Bronx, N.Y., took a moment to feed their neighbors: four wild fuzzy puppies that live in holes and tunnels they've burrowed in the huge berm along Fallujah's train tracks at a Marine held position on the northwest side of Fallujah, Iraq on Saturday, April 10, 2004.

The puppies wagged filthy tails and let out little squeals as the Marines fed them from the packaged rations. The puppies didn't care for the food any more than the Marines, but lapped up copious amounts of water before the two troops went back to work.

Earlier Saturday, Lance Cpl. Joseph McCarthy ate a big black dung beetle to win a $40 bet, and to kill the time.

"That one tasted kinda funky," he said, washing it down with a swallow of water. "The big long one I ate last year tasted better."

Any of you guys that are so quick to turn this kid into a corpse or a killer have anyu children of your own?
It is not we who want him to be a corpse, that is unless he decides to use that weapon against coalition forces, no more likely it is his own which wishes him death ala martyr-dumb

Or, you know, maybe he doesn't have any parents cause they were killed in a cross fire somewhere?

RIP Cpl. McCarthy. I must say sending what looks like an eight or nine year old child into war with an AK is disgusting. Reminds me of that scene in Blackhawk Down when the kid shot his dad by accident.

NATO general is bigger. And has more stars. :D

Ya, the Russian's get compacted by those big hat's they wear ;)

see the difference: old fat bole-head dude and an american general.
by comparing those two persons we see much more than difference between two persons. A think all russian generals have some additional personal who takes care about his uniforms hat which is so big that can be used as a spare landing zone for heavy lift choppers. :D Legacy of Mercedes-lover minister of defence mr. Pavel Grachev :P

You have to somewhat blind not to have noticed him earlier...

But you are right his hat is really nice. It is so big, he could probably club you to death with it.
Very good to have a practical weapon as part of your uniform.

see the difference: old fat bole-head dude and an american general.

Hey, when I am his age I'll be just as bold. And my great-uncle was just as bold and made a semi-decent Lt.Col. Russians in general tend to lead much unhealthier lives than the American career military officers. Hence, the signs of age.

My friend told me a story about a super-fat tank officer (Col) who was in charge of procurement or maintenance and have not ridden in a tank in years. Would not fit into the hatch with a crowbar assist. He needed two uniform belts sewn together. An inspector with particularly virulent streak of sadism asked him to check odometer discrepancy in one tank that was in the garage. The fat officer planned for this and had his subordinate execute some sort of a diversion. So by the time the inspector got back to the issue, he reported that he's been in the hull and now's back with his bogus report.

I did not notice the cap. I think the bigger the cap the cooler the junior officers serving at HQ think they look, or something. I doubt he's a guard though or an enlisted. I think he's a captain.

Oh, an American general also has more decorations.

And in general, my general can beat your general.
