View Full Version : I realised something at work yesterday

I noticed something disturbing the other day at work. There are no fire alarm boxes in the laundry room, or near it. There is only one light box that is supposed to go off if an alarm is pulled, but it's over next to the doorway. It's so loud in there because of the dryers and the exhaust fans constantly running that it's hard to hear the alarm actually going off.

But what if there's a fire in the laundry room itself? You've seen (hopefully) the pictures of the room that I posted awhile back. There are no alarm boxes in the immediate vicinty that somebody can run to and pull. I took a walk around the basement and the only alarm box down there was outside one of the supply closets, well out of easy sight and reach. Kind of disturbing to think about, especially if you consider the fact that there are an abundance of alarm boxes and light boxes on every floor of the hotel and in the lobby proper. The only place lacking in this area is the basement, where upwards of thirty or forty people come and go and work every day. There are several potential places for a fire to start in the basement, one of them being the laundry room, another being the engineering workshops. Granted, there are fire extinguishers provided for these areas (one per, I might add) should a fire get started. But given the nature of these workplaces, wouldn't you think there would be more consideration given as to the availability of an alarm box that can be quickly reached and pulled in the event of a serious emergency?

Something to think about if you work or know somebody who works in a similar environment.
