War and death on his mind, Spc. Barry Page dipped into the waters of the Tigris River to get baptized by Army Chaplain Capt. Xuan Tran on the banks of the sprawling U.S. military headquarters. "To bathe in the waters of "Mother Ganges" is to be cleansed of all sins."

Hindu holy men have been arguing for more water to be released from the Narora Dam to ease the pollution in the river.

No doubt it is in dire straits. "In some places in Varanasi it is estimated the concentration of pollutants is 340,000 times the permissible level, exposing those who bathe in it to an alarming number of diseases."

Some eye-openers from a schools site:

"The Ganges River is considered the most sacred river to the Hindus. Each year, thousands of pilgrims come from far away cities to bathe in the "holy" water. Some pilgrims come only to cleanse and purify themselves. The sick and crippled come hoping the water will cure their ailments. Some Hindus come to die in the river because they believe that those who die in the Ganges will be carried to paradise.

The Ganges River is believed to be the Hindu goddess Ganga come to earth in the form of a river to redeem the souls of worthy men and women. To bathe in the waters of "Mother Ganges" is to be cleansed of all sins."

Cleanliness is next to godliness. :-)

cheers
