Hi,
Does anyone know the exact orders for the different parts of battle drill no.5 - The attack battle orders? Its for this thing I'm doing.
So far I have:
"Take cover"
"Section! Quarter right! Rapid Fire!"
Then how do you give the orders to do a two stage attack etc? Thanks...
This is really a question to current or ex british army soldiers...

I'm not sure, but at cadets I was recently taught reaction to fire and GRIT(Group Range Indication Type of fire).
This is what I was taught, if I get something wrong, feel free to correct me (in a mature way).
For example.
An MG has opened up. U react running a meters few foward, zig zagging. Go ****e crawl for a few more meters then role to either side.
The group commander then asks if anyone has seen where the fire came from or where they think the enemy is.
If a trooper has seen where the enemy has come from, he shouts the
group who he wants to fire at the target (Fireteam, MG gunners, Section, Platoon etc)
the range to the target (50, 100, 200 meters etc)
the indication to the target (12 o'clock, 6 o'clock etc(12 o'clock will be designated by the commander))
and the type of fire (rapid fire, watch and shoot, repetition, and rippels)
all in that order.

CLAP is how you say it.
Clear, Loud, As an order, Pause
Screaming Eagles text book response is correct as well, according to my ADF notes.

Thanks guys, I know what do do in the battle drills, reaction to effective fire etc. I want to know what the Section Commander is yelling when you are attacking :)
How does he initiate a two stage attage etc.?

In the U.S., a squad leader would be yelling "Get those Motherf*#%ers!" :P

PureMassacre:
I assume you know about the six section battle drills...
Well, you're talking about the Attack (No. 5)
The lads are correct in terms of fire control orders, but these are needed (mainly) during the 4th B.D., winning the firefight.
Just to clarify, here we go:
Section Battle Drills:
1. Battle prep: PAWPERSO
-P rotection
-A mmunition
-W eapons
-P ersonal Cam
-E quipment
-R adios
-S pecialist Equipment
-O rders
All this is done in a secure location before proceeding.
2. Reaction to effective enemy fire: (ie, bullets are knocking you're belt kit off, or knocking you off. not before)
Dash...Down...Crawl...Observe (for the enemy)...(set)Sights...Fire
then, the I/c will be shouting "has anyone seen the enemy?"...
3. Enemy location:
...at which point, the switched on cookie that has will give a 'target indication' such as..."300...half left...lone sniper"
otherwise, we carry on with the three methods of locating the enemy (used sequentially)
1. Observation...look for likely positions and try to spot the enemy/muzzle flash.
2. Fire...shoot a few rounds into likely positions and observe the effects
3. Movement...tell two bods to get up and run for 5 metres while the rest of you observe for flashes.
4. Winning the firefight:
Once the enemy is spotted, the I/c (or 2i/c) can then start to supress the enemy by giving a 'Fire Control Order' for example:
Group...Range...Indication...Type of Fire
"Section...300...Half left...Exposed Tree...Base of tree...two knuckles right...lone sniper...from the left...ripple fire..."
This would start to get the enemy sniper's head down and (hopefully) pin him down. You are now starting to regain the initiative.
From the moment of first contact, the i/c is starting to think of a plan. at section level it is fairly straight forward, either right, left or straight up the middle. The principle of 'one foot on the ground' being applied throughout.
If the distance is still far (ie 300m), the I/c might 'pepper pot' the section forward. eg, the two fire teams would alternate firing and moving, covering eachother as they go and keeping the enemy suppressed.
5. The Attack: (three parts)
Once the distance is short enough (it may have been to start with), the i/c will dish out his hasty attack orders (may have done before) which will simply be:
eg: "Delta fire support...Charlie assaulting...right flanking"
The Approach:
then the 2i/c in charge of delta will position them to give fire support and control their fire. Charle will wing round the right flank (under cover of smoke, maybe) and shake out along an line facing the en position. The desired angle between fire support (delta) and the assaulting lot's (charlie) line of assault should be 90 degrees. That way delta can give covering fire until the assault team is a few feet from the enemy.
The Assault:
charlie splits down into a two man fire base (extra support) and a two man assault pair (i/c and grenadier).
The Fight-Through:
The assault pair crawl etc up to the enemy under cover of fire and the grenadier 'posts' a grenade, lets it go off (then the support groups switch fire to the rear or further likely positions) and the two then run in firing full auto into the position...ultimately killing the occupiers.
6. The re-org:
Protection
Ammunition
Security
Searchers
Wounded
Orders
Resupply
Defence
Ammo and Casualties are the 2i/c's job, the rest is the i/c's.
So in short, any orders for Battle Drill No.5 (the Attack) would be quick, involving only the essentials of:
-Fire support, whose doing it and (roughly) where.
-Assault group, (whoever's left!)
-Direction: Left/Right flanking or up the middle
The whole thing is based on a rapid assessment (estimate) of the enemy, your casualties, the ground and your mission.
Hope that helps. Ask if not... :)
