Russia Makes First Israeli Defense Purchase
23:32 Sep 19, '04 / 4 Tishrei 5765

Following a series of devastating terror attacks culminating in an attack on a school which left hundreds of schoolchildren dead, Russia has made its first defense purchase from Israel, according to Yediot Ahronot

Yavne-based Aeronautics Defense Systems signed a contract to sell unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to Russia's Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies, & Natural Disasters, according to Globes, who confirmed the Yediot report.

Russia bought the company's Aerostar UAV, which has also been sold to Angola, Ivory Coast and other African countries. Aerostar is currently used to defend oil installations and other facilities. It is similar to drones used to target Hamas chiefs Yassin and Rantissi last year.

The Russian deal is worth several million dollars

I remember hearing somewhere that Israel Aircraft Industries is working on a credit card size UAV or something like that. Anyone know anything about that?

Seems a little unusual, but not that amazing.

The Russians already operate quite a few UAVs already but most are military. I am guessing what they want are cheaper systems not based (launched or controlled from) military vehicles.
