I had the privelage of seeing the Thunderbirds earlier in July up in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Those guys are amazing show pilots.

Does anyone has a clue what's the left missile is ?

It's rear (stabilizing) fins seems to be identical to the AIM-9 Sidewinder, but it has no forward (steering) fins. My guess is a mock-up to simulate aerodinamyc forces on the wingtip and simulate weight.

I believe the left missile is an AIM-132 ASRAAM.

They must have used very high speed film. The clarity is amazing.

I believe that is a Tornado. Is that right?

Nope. Different tailfins, different nose profile. Must be a mock-up like what hendrix33 said.

The unknown missile is not a missile. It is a training aid, which enables much more accurate after-training debriefing. I'm not axactly sure about the way it works, so i won't speculate. BTW, you can see there's no seeker in the nosecone - and radar-guided missiles have a pointed nose, unlike this rounded one.

As for the german plane - that's the good old Tornado. No doubt.

I think the last photo is the best of the bunch - you can actualy hear the engine roar through the photo!

Yup, it's a Tornado, one of the ground attack variants.

The 7th picture is interesting. I didn't know that F-22s are already being flown in Red Flag exercises. Or maybe it's just being tested in Nellis and isn't part of the exercises at all (I'm leaning towards this theory).

I think it's just a mock-up to simulate missile loads. Not really a training aid in the instrument sense.

The one with the needle-like protusion (left wingtip hardpoint, right side when looking at the picture) is the one with instrumentations. It's part of the ACMI (Air Combat Manuevering Instrumentation) system.

The Tornado pictured above is not the ground attack version (Tornado IDS - Interdiction and Strike), but a Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat & Reconoisance).

AFAIK it is the only dedicated Wild Weasel / SEAD aircraft currently in service. The Prowler works in SEAD - missions together with other aircraft, but is not really a Wild Weasel aircraft.

The ECR has made the Luftwaffe quite popular among its allies...

Oops, you're right. My bad. :)

The Italian Air Force's got a few Tornado ECRs, too (Tornado IT-ECR). They were first flown in combat a few years ago over the former Yugoslavia.

Well, I looked in to that and it doesn't seem to be ASRAAM

Another indication which I haven't mentioned is the fact the 'missile' has only one set of fins. Most missiles have at least one set of stabilizing, fixed fins, and an additional set of steering, axis mounted, fins.

This leads me to the conclusion it's probably a mock-up of somesort.

Higher the film speed the lower the quality. The photohrapher used a technique called panning.

I can say what that "missile" is! :)
It's a POD for ACMI!
It's used to know some paramethers of flight as SPEED,Altitude, heading, and other data
Here u can see some of the pods used for ACMI http://www.awtideci.com/acmi.htm
The first one is used in that pic and it's the comkon for NATO!(Also AMI HAS GOT IT!)

Very nice pics. Thanks for posting them!

It was nice to see the Raptor as well. I don't know the full story, but I would not be surprised one bit if these were flown in a limited setting during limited combat operations. This is a perfect, non-hostile proving and test ground.

Remember, the Raptor is not too far off.

There is only 1 year, 11 months before the first Raptor squadron has IOC at Langly AFB.

Glad you like the pictures and thanks for the kind comments, they were all taken with a Canon 10D and 100-400 lens. Shot predominantly at 200ISO.

A lot more photos from the same Flag can be found here http://www.warplane.co.uk/nellisredflag.htm
