I wish I had one of those buzzer things you see on game shows that signal a wrong answer cause a lot of those pictures are not the Marines Ah-1W Super Cobra. All of those pictures of the Cobra that have a flat-panel canopy are actually the Army's Ah-1F or "Fully Modernized" Cobra. Any single engine Cobra is going to be Army, unless its the orginal G models the Marines used in Vietnam. Just an FYI for Cobra fans.

Yeah, you can identify the AH-1W by the bubble canopy and twin engines.

Just to clarify, the Cobra is no longer used by active duty US Army.

Yeah, but if it's coming straight at you, you only see it for a few seconds, then there's this bright flash, then the world erupts under your feet....and then you see these 72 chicks.... :D

My brother while doing his week at Camp Pendleton this summer for Navy ROTC saw a close air support demonstration by a pair of AH-1W's. The way he puts it, they come in buzzing your heads, fire off a Hellfire missile, and all you hear is a giant boom while the ground shakes, and a very nice explosion.

They also demonstrated their FFAR rockets and 20mm cannon. All he had to say was "those things are fvckin' vicious."

The same goes for the Hind. ... While the Soviets dont use FFARs usually, 57mm rockets and a couple of ATGMs should make up for that defieciency.
And the latest variants of Hind can also carry Igla Sams... a match for Longbow Stinger perhaps?

Back that up with troops in yonder compartment firing personal weapons, and you've got a flying IFV.

Dee-li-cious!

When I was a youngster in 29 Palms, I learned how to do SEAD missions with mortars/arty, rotary wing, and fast wing. Cobras were a godsend. They eat things. Many times, when they were engaging the targets, we couldn't even see them. They would lurk in between hilltops and do their business, then come thumping across the target area. It was great.

All of the Israeli Cobras are F models. You can tell because A) The flat plate canopy, B) The single engine and C) The 20mm cannon has a cover over it on the Whiskey models, the F doesnt.

The one thing I can give credit to the Marines is that they kept the traditional round plate "bubble" canopy as opposed to the Army's flate plate. The round plate offers a whole helluvalot better visiblity than the flat plate, plus it looks sexier.

What's the status on the AH-1Z?

So far the USMC has committed to upgrading 180 of their AH-1Ws into the Z model and the Turkish Army has put in a request for 50 of out of a total procurement of 145. Apparently there are also plans to develope a Cobra Radar System similiar to the Longbow system. This helicopter seems to be able to go forever woot
