Last week, Blink-182 performed abroad USS NIMITZ (CVN-68). I hope this isn't too off-topic for here, but I think it's important to show that the boys who do all the hard work get a couple of hours of fun while at sea.

ABOARD USS NIMITZ, At Sea (NNS) -- Multiplatinum-selling band Blink-182, comprised of singer/bassist Mark Hoppus, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker came aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Aug. 27 to meet with the crew and put on a rocking show in the hangar bay.

Blink-182, a pop/punk band that got their start in San Diego in 1993, is famous for songs such as “All The Small Things” and “What’s My Age Again?”

While aboard Nimitz, the band had lunch with Nimitz and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 Sailors.

“This was great,” said Barker. “We walked in and had dinner with complete strangers who instantly became friends.”

According to Hoppus, he was excited to see what it was like to live aboard an aircraft carrier.

Blink-182 completed a busy day of meeting Sailors and signing autographs with a high-energy show in typical Blink-182 style.

“They were really enthusiastic,” said Airman Bryan Ward, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 97. “It took a lot of dedication to come all the way out here to entertain us.”

The band sang three of the songs off of their upcoming album and all of the originals that they are famous for.

According to the band, they were honored to be aboard Nimitz.

“This is an awesome experience. It is so unreal,” said DeLonge. “I have a personal tie to the military, because my brother is in the military and a lot of my wife’s family is in the military.”

According to Barker, he was excited about coming to Nimitz, but nervous about traveling to the Middle East. "Meeting the people outweighed everything that scared me, though,” he said.

For many Sailors aboard Nimitz, the concert will be one of the most memorable moments of the western Pacific (WESTPAC) Deployment.

“This was the best experience that I have had since I have been on board Nimitz,” said Aviation Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class (AW) Dan Colby, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 97. “They are really down to earth people, and it was great to have the opportunity to meet them.”

The band expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the sacrifices the crew of Nimitz and CVW-11 make.

“We are honored to have this once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Hoppus. “We may never get another chance to play a show on an aircraft carrier. Thanks for having us on board. Go Navy.”

The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group and CVW-11 are currently deployed in support of the global war on terrorism.

I doubt that there's many people onboard the Nimitz who would like Blink 182, but, I guess it's good anyway.

Anything is better than nothing to break up the monotony aboard the Nimitz with 125 degree heat. They just loved Lee Ermey's visit, along with Brittany Murphy, Wayne Newton, Alyssa Milano and especially the Dallas Cheerleaders during the USO show.

Blink 182 is a great band...

3 Doors Down made similar performance last year, when they released "WHen Im Gone".

Still I bet they boosted morale and gave peopel, who defenently neeeded it, a break from their hard work. Would you rather have a "real" punk band like Rage against the machine or maybe the Dixie Cicks perform while speaking their mind about war and oil? They'd be launched from the catapult before the consert was over.

By having a visit form a famous and popular band, the sailors recieve an important message: You're not forgotten/keep kicking ass.

Yes I think I'd classify:

RATM as "punk" and DK, Randic ect. as punk, without quotationmarks.

But it's apples/oranges. You're bashing posers, I'm cheering entertainers.

American Errorist:

Enemy of the planet we finally have a common cause a catalyst
A reason to forget about our differences and stand as a united front it’s up to us
To expose and humiliate the errorists, the american errorists, we’ll start with one
I know just one, the war has begun

You want to use NOFX to strenghten morale? It's about entertaining troops, not about educating them about the evil empire of capitailsm.

I know RATM would not qualify as hardcore, but they mix music and politics enough to appeal to the pseudo-alternative audience of MTV. The point is you don't want a band like RATM or NOFX performing infront of the sailors, burning their bras and calling them baby-killers. You want a popular party band playing jolly tunes, like Brintey Spears or... Blink 182. The point being showing support of the troops, not depressing the hell out of them with teengae rebellion directed against any given authority, except the bands own parents ;)

No matter how true to Punk NOFX is, they'd be fed to the USS NIMITZ reactor if they spoke their minds.

Punk ain't no religious cult
Punk means thinking for yourself
You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head

I only like a few blink-182 songs, and would probably not buy any of their CDs, but their visit and their comments earn a 'thumbs up' in my book. It's nice to see entertainers doing their job - entertaining...and cheerfully, I might add.

People, its a friggen band, punk/pop/rock/metal/ragecore whatever. It was something to entertain the troops, and dont even get me started on RATM, bunch of stinkin hypocrites(sp) they are all. I'l take Smashing Pumpkins, Offspring, Taking Back Sunday,AFI, Disturbed over them any day, at least the lead singer of Disturbed has actual combat experiance.

The article failed to mention Hoppus' father worked as a military engineer designing ordinance for fighter jets. His hometown is a small place somewhere in Nevada. If anyone has the name, spill it.

They (Blink182) are in support of our troops..!! That is all that matters. Believe me when I say that troops love it when Celebs, rockers, rappers, and whoever do "live" things like Blink182 did. Takes their minds off things, even for a few hours, and the humdrum of everday tasks. Personally, I think it's great. And I'm not even a big fan of Blink182.
