Lets hear it, interesting to see what other people get out of their carrer.
Myself, my pinnacle of military life was scaling the rocky mountains this summer on a mountain ops course. Including rapelling/ climbing/ ruck marches/zip lines over casm's and finally hanging from a griffon 1000's of feet over the ground.
Please, I want only active or ex members of the military to respond. Therfore, no airsoft "military experincies", paintball, videogame, etc.

Getting to load up MG3 belts with tracers only, on a warm midsummers day.
Setting firing range on fire, dry grass and 12 people each unloading 200 tracerrounds fullauto do not mix.
Seeing a B-52 passing low almost directly above my head.
Returning to civilianstatus.

Getting f***** by the drafting committee (although I had fun and made lifelong friends)
Two nights:
Being on point in a swamp getting sucked down to the neck almost drowning. The only positive thing was I didn't lose my weapon.
Without light untangling a friend, who dashed straight into a pyramid wall of 3 rolls of nato barbwire.
'93 August 1st. 10 years ago I turned into a civilian again, this thread opened up alot of good memories.

Worst - being well within danger close of Qatari Army 155mm artillery fire during a training op in 1995.
Best - everything leading to the experience listed above - it was a dog and pony show for some dignitaries, but it was fun. Some B-1Bs, then A-10s plastered the target area, then tanks and LAVs chewed it up, then it was our turn (grunts). The targets were 500 gal plastic drums filled with oil and chopped tires. When all was said and done, the Qatari Army fired artillery fire "in support". It got a little too close :D

I failed to include my worst.......hmm.
1. All the way back on basic, walking a 25k ruck back to the shacks after a nav ex. and being so rushed to get moving, I didnt have time to put the soles back in my boots. My feet were jelly, pure flesh and ripped skin. Thank god for mole skin and medical tape. Never went to the MIR, didnt want to get RTU'd.
2. This past year, told I was going on roto to Bosnia, than a week later being told I wasent. I was extremely choked. I know there isint much happening over there, and its alot of ****ing the dog, but the Baltics have always peaked my interest.

good thread...It's almost impossible to choose the best/worst times b/c there are so many...
+ any graduation ceremony is usually pretty good
+ deployments will be full of + and -....
This story comes to mind....I was in the stan for 4th of july, and we had a bbq and someone got a few russian beers. (of course we were on a high alert but just the taste of one beer w/bbq was pretty awesome)
Then after dark we went on the roof of the safehouse and we had a huge american flag or two, someone (I think our TAC-P) had gotten a couple of kites sent to him. One was this huge kite all Red/White/Blue and shaped like a jet (that's why I think it was the tac-p)
Anyway we were all singing the anthem (we even had the SAS guys up there...I love the brits most professional troopers in the world) and then someone got some flares we had two kinds the ones in the tube and the 40mm ones for the M203. We started shooting the flares, not the best idea b/c we were in the middle of the city and it attracted a lot of attention, But it was cool as hell.....
There are plenty of other stories to tell but that one is mostly harmless...

Good one Beowulf, I remember a lot of good times that always seemed to involve that one warm beer you get out in the field, thats when you realise how good beer tastes.
Best time-Did a CAX with Royal Marines in 29 Palms CA. The night before they left (think they were off to Norway) they piled up all their trash that wasnt going (pallets etc) and we had this bonfire in the desert that could probably be seen from space. Somehow( ;) ) a bunch of powder charge bags (from the howitzers) along with anything that wasnt bolted down ended up being tossed on the fire, it was quite spectacular. Everyone got drunk and naked(mandatory skivies on head and warpaint) and danced around the fire with burning torches, it was like a scene from Lord Of The Flies.
Worst- Somehow I got roped into being the A-driver for the Ammo-truck(Artillery) on another trip to 29 Palms. We were driving at night, lights out using NVGs at the back of the convoy. The convoy was going dangerously fast, with the dust, we may as well of had our eyes closed. Just as the driver and I agreed that this was getting really dangerous, we hit the only fvcking tree stump in the whole damn desert. Our trailer flipped spilling about a hundred 95 pound Arty shells onto the desert floor. Me and Lcpl ****ey spent the whole night loading those damn shells back into the trailer, while the rest of the Battery slept soundly at the next pos.

I can identify with ya scrim, there is nothing worse than getting sleep ****ed. On my Mountian ops ex, we climbed and exausting hall up the mountain with only a 45 minute sleep on the summit. We climbed and walked for about 23 hours staight with only 1 meal break of 10 minutes. Took alot out of me.

my worst had to be my one and only firefight a nearly lethal farce.
My section was on a fairly pointless Border OP not terribly covert but the plan was to move on before night fall.
We get clocked by an IRA spotter bloke walking a Dog with a massive pair of binos. Still no Drama call up HQ tell them whats going on and prepare to **** off sharpish.
This is where the brown smelly stuff begins to mount up
Sunray comes back stay firm. Bloke with binos is taking more of an interest in our location. In the real world he'd have got slotted but this is La la land so the rules don't allow for it.
anyway as night falls the sections morale has reached subterran levels nothing like waiting to get shot at to improve your humour Hq still saying stay firm till morning :(
When our section commander has a bright idea lets have a fire a regular campfire. what the hell build a bloody greatfire dossbags bergans round it make a perfect target and hide down in a handy drainage ditch
two hours later the provos open fire from four diffrent fireing spots weapons used include a G3 an ak47 a bloody great 14.5mm Dshk russian machinge gun and an m60 (thanks USa for that one much appreciated not ) section return fire from the safety of a drainage ditch I bang off nearly 30 m203 rounds as fast as possible in the general direction of the enemy. while this is going on our 2i/c decides to put up a para illum flare nice one give the enemy plenty of light to shoot at us with . at this point are mostly tame scottish nutter decides to bayonet charge the enemy why I don't know.off he goes bellowing and for want of a better Idea I follow at this point the provos a) decide they don't fancy meeting someone who will charge 3 mgs or b) run out of ammo and retire to the pub. we spend 20 minutes blundering in the dark as we find out the provos were shooting from nearly a k away and theres a bloody great river between them and us turns out in daylight to be more of a stream.
nearly get slotted by our section when we return I get punched by the section commander scotish physco left alone. Ira kill four doss bags and four begans and shoot one guys harness off his shoulder. UK forces hit one ramshackle hut and set it alight. Farmer attempts to sue MOD claiming valuable pedigree bull in said hut. Mod counters could be uk forces as no members of Hm forces would fire into southern ireland :D
and rupert who left us out there well somone stole and torched his bmw

Well, I have two positive incidents, can't recall any negatives at the moment.
+ Having an exercise which was a cooperation with IAF, so they sent along a few Blackhawks for us to ride to and from the target area for the exercise (instead of on-foot navigation, they dropped us 2km from the target area).
+ Obeserving a live-fire armoured platoon exercise. One of the most impressive thing's I ever had a chance to see.

Hmm, my best experiances are the same as most other soldiers, Passing out, good times had by all with the addition of beautiful booze :)
Worst times were subjective, then they were the worst times of my life but really they weren't close to what some have to go though.
Boo hoo, this one time it was really really cold
Boo hoo this one time someone threw a brick at me
oh dear what a pity nevermind.
I think my worst experiance would of been moving one young woman who had been dragged out of her car and shot, simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Maybe watching people leaving their homes because no matter what we do, even if we did our job perfectly, unless we are standing outside their house for the next 20 years, one day someone is going to come along and burn everything they own, if not kill them.
Earlier men have seen much worse, later men will probably see much worse.

Worst;
Driving through Cova Lima district from Suai, to the border at Selele on October 25th 1999 and seeing nothing but desolation. Not a building standing, not a roof intact, not a living soul to be found.
And knowing if the politicians had shown some intestinal fortitude and deployed us a month earlier we could have put a stop to it.
Best;
Driving the same route in reverse, eight months later, and being met by crowds of Timorese lineing the road. Smiling, clapping, thanking us for our contribution.
And knowing that our exertions and sacrifices were appreciated by those who mattered most.

Best: 3 months assigned to .50 cal deck watch in the Persian Gulf. Easy duty, got a great tan and live fire exercise was always a blast.
Worst: Cruising way up north in the very same Persian Gulf with the expectation of firing an assload of Tomahawks only to be stood down. One week later, we were relieved on schedule, one week after that our relief cruiser fired an assload of Tomahawks. Talk about blue balls.
Best: Sailing down near south America on counter-drug ops and busting a rinky-dink fishing boat carrying 6 tons of blow and heading home in time for Christmas.
Worst: Maintenance on the torpedo room door in semi-rough seas, and having a huge wave almost wash me out to sea (except for my fingernails clawing into the bulkhead). Pulling myself back in to see 6 inches of water in the torpedo room full of live weapons (saltwater activated).

Just this summer, many may have heard that Western Canada was in a state of emergency. 1000's of raging fires have evacuated 70'000 from their homes. The entire whole of the 39th brigrade including my unit submitted troops in the much needed firefighting effort. I arrrived In Kelowna the night a class 6 fire raged through a residential district engulfing the homes and destroying everything in its path. 283 homes in all. The destruction was a gut wrenching experience. Particulair seeing it up close and personal on your front doorstep.
Yet, we carried on, and for weeks we set up fireguards and put out hot spots. The amzing thing was the response from the public. It was amazing. One could not walk down the street without people running up to you, hugging, kissing, and taking pictures of you in appreciation. When we moved in our HL,'s people honked, waved, and posters by children could be seen everywhere. At night, restraunts and bars gave us standing ovations, free jugs of beer, and the women, THE WOMEN! all over us....
I was just glad to be doing something worthwhile for my fellow Canadians and it was a great feeling knowing you are appreciated.

I just posted this somewhere else so you might read this twice....
Funny story (wasn't at the time): I was stationed at Ft. Bragg, when I was just a little cherry, I wanted to "check out" the Delta compound, which IS there...I parked my happy butt right across the street, got out of my car, and I poop you not, within 5 seconds of my feet hitting the ground, a Hummer (all black with tinted windows) pulls up and this huge dude with a goatee and sunglasses (no uniform) Leg holster and pistola, M-4 - the works, get's out...Scared aint the word I would use at that moment, but he asked my business..very firm, wanted some I.D. ( I showed my military I.D. )..I told him who I was and what I was doing, He basically said, to keep it short and sweet..."You have 2 seconds to get in your car and go very far away!!" Later did I find out, that I could've been shot on site. They don't mess aournd with stuff like that. So, even though I was in the Army...It made no difference. Definitely not a proud moment for yours truly...Stupid, stupid, stupid.
So the moral of the story is kiddies...Don't park across the street from the Delta compound.
Hopefully you can appreciate the value of such a true account of the real D Boys...

I am just curious….were you ever in Israel?!? I say this because you remind me of these American soldiers that I met when I was in the military on leave (well I was on a weekend leave) and they were also on some leave from the MFO and they were vacationing in the beautiful Israeli resort town of Eliot (as was I). What great bunch of fellows. I remember that they asked what I was in the military and when I told them that I was a paratrooper all of them shook a high five and started telling me all the different countries wings that they have jumped from (which is defiantly pretty cool to do, something I would love to do but for obvious political reasons I will not get that chance) I don’t think I ever drank as much beer as I did with those fellows. Anyways I remember what was funny was when I asked them if they were stationed in Egypt, why then did they come here?!? And some fellow (perhaps you?!? Hey you never know………) screamed "are you f*cking kidding me, in Egypt you cant see **** under those womens burkas or long Islamic drasses, where here in eilat you have a fully westernized resort with all sorts of women" boy we laughed at that. It is true for I would say that eilat has many foreign tourists besides the Israeli tourists so there really is a large variety. (oh and they are all walking around in bathing suites are bikinis, heck its almost like the French Riviera). There is no batter place to go to when you are on leave.
Anyways just taking a stab at it if it might have been you (heck you never know....)

Well I guess it wasn’t you. It was in the year 2000.
Hey I also had a bit of a startled look when they said that somewhat strong statement, but you have to understand that they were drinking pretty wildly by then and that in that moment it was funny statement. But I don’t think they meant that as any personal attack against Egyptians or Islamic people or anything like that. I just took it as a couple of soldiers on leave who were very horny and would rather see westernized women (who are skimpily clad in bathing suits or bikinis) from every where (for again there are a lot of foreign tourists from all over the world...heck I remember meeting some very nice Swedish girls, but that’s for another post). but again that’s what they said so I really cant talk for them.
When you were in Israel did you go as a soldier?!?

I liked Israel. I was there as a Soldier. My eyes could've been fooling me, the heat and all, but there were some dam fine women there. At the beaches..man, It must be in the water or something, but they all had huge ( * )( * ), ya know what I mean..Or maybe they were Italian. I met a lot of Itailians there, the Siani Peninsula is the number one scuba diving area in the world, so I guess all the Italians showed up...Who knows. Over all, the Israelis were very gracious hosts. I would love to go back there someday.

Wow, my time -- mostly reserve duty -- was marked by only one significant military conflict (Just Cause) and never had much opportunity to experience anything close to real combat. So, what I have to offer might be run-of-the-mill at best.
My best experiences were graduating at the top of my "BNOC" NCO Academy class at age 20 and the top of the 2d Army NBC school a couple of years later.
My CID detachment was assigned to LSTA and CI support of REFORGER '87 and as an E5 getting to leave post nightly in civvies to do "Crim Intel" in the heart of Rotterdam and Amsterdam while even 0-8s were confined to quarters for the duration of the exercise was an oddly fun experience.
Worst experience was a temporary assignment stateside assignment to the Ops section of "regional" CID HQ at tiny Ft. Gillem in support of Just Cause... with a God-awful abscessed molar. Finally the XO personally drove me across Atlanta to Fort McPherson to have an emergency root canal... and right back to the duty desk.
Another bad experience was during a night FTX in a training school... was assigned as a squad leader and after putting my guys into place for the night, I went to the CP for a meeting with the platoon leader. We stacked our weapons and met next to a water buffalo and as the meeting broke up I lagged behind and started topping off my canteen and realized that all the weapons were gone... along with mine. I alerted the cadre who told me all sorts of horror stories about FBI investigations and such. Darkness had fallen as the search for my M16 concluded in favor of light and noise discipline.
They handed me a weapon and told me to return to my squad and not lose this loaner. During the brief moments of the night when it was my sleep rotation, I laid on top of that damn M16 with the sling wrapped like a tourniquet around my arm and thought about all the trouble I was in for losing an M16. We made it through the night and just before daybreak, I had a thought hit me... as the sun came up, I checked the serial number and it was my weapon they had loaned me. What a relief... I guess that moment was probably one of my best and worst...

Hey Junglist, I'm not in a high speed unit. Now go back to painting your gloves in the Swedish Army.
Then why does your screen name say that you are?
Oh and I've never painted my gloves, and I don't intend to either.
I have however painted my ruck, my AP, my two combat rigs, my helmet and my ghillehood. And I'm in the process of trying to get permission to paint my rifle.
Now go back to playing counter-strike.

Haha my SN doesn't say "I am in the 160th SOAR". This is the unit I want to fly for once I get commissioned from ROTC, so you're not the only one who has a ruck, helmet, and rifle.
Counter-Strike? WTF is that?

Aviator Officer billets in 160SOAR are non asecension for butter bars; its X number of flying hours. But you have a dad and all your friends there, so I'm sure the CO will get you a waiver. However, I thought you should of known this.

Wearing a patch/tab is different from having a SN. Take a look at the members on this site, you'll find tons of people with names of units. These two situations are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

My worst experience in army was definetly the week long field exercise at the end of second phase. The moment we set up our tents it started raining and it rained for whole week (and most of the next week), it was damn cold and food was from the worst kitchen in Slovenian army.
The best moment was probably recon training week before. It was warm for this time of year and we were spending whole time in woods.

my worst experience was in SF operational detachment delta when we had to do CQB training for 18 hours each day before Desert Storm... And the worst part was that all we did was go SCUD hunting. :(

Actually.. No. What is the difference? But hey - don't take my word for it. Go over to SOCNET and ask those guys, theyr all friendly and understanding about people like you.
